Ask a question
I'm interested in purchasing an mp for my 72 gallon 1/2 circle oceanic, soft corals only, will 2 mp10qd suffice or do I need to upgrade to two mp40's? Glass thickness seems to be ok for both models.
a good wave pattern, or do I need a MP1W0QD, as well as a MP10QD?
The Mp10QD pumps can push out quite a bit of flow. Having two pumps does have its benefits of needing less overall flow to keep dead spots to a minimum and the ability to change the direction of the flow. However for a smaller tank, you can easily get away with a single pump that is controllable. The biggest concern with a single pump is allowing water to flow back and forth instead of just a constant stream.
This certainly can work well! Keep in mind this work on glass up to .375" thick. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
The flow rates would work well however you will need to ensure the glass thickness is under 3/8" or the Vortechs will not mount. In many cases we are forced to use the MP40 due to the glass thickness being 1/2". Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
You can use a single mp10 on a 60 cube just fine! For ideal flow patterns you may add an extra pump to keep dead zones at bay. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
It doesn't work with with 10 mm or is just a best practice to follow?
Have a great day!
For an SPS dominant tank of that size we would suggest a minimum of two Mp10QD pumps to get it going. Then once the SPS starts to grow and branch out, you could easily find yourself needing one or two more to get flow everywhere throughout the tank depending on how much coral is in the tank, and the aquascape.

Great pumps By Mkharmon on 6/11/2017Mkharmon would recommend this product to a friendVery good build quality and does a great job at what they are supposed to do. One thing you will really appreciate about these is how easy they are to remove and clean without unwrapping cords or fishing around the back of your tank.
High quality, quiet pump By Paul on 4/3/2017Paul would recommend this product to a friendGreat quality pump as you would expect from Ecotech. Certainly not the cheapest, but known for reliability. The China made pumps typically don't last and are more likely to fail or crack and leach metals into the tank. When set up as directed, the pump is silent. Great pre-programmed modes.
Ecotech customer service - not good... By Geckoejon on 3/22/2017Geckoejon wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI have been given the run around from eco tech customer service over getting product info for several mp10's that I already own. I sent several emails and left a voicemail, without results. I asked for the output voltage and amp rating on the power packs... Seems like "high end" equipment with a high price would have better customer service...
Best upgrade I've done to my tank yet. By Zachary on 1/17/2017Zachary would recommend this product to a friendBefore purchasing the Vortech MP10 I had two Hydor Koralia 600GPH matched with the Hydor Smart Wave Controller, and the difference is unbelieveable. And I only got one! The output of this pump is easily twice the output of both of my old pumps combined. I am extremely happy with the quality and ease of operation. I will be purchasing a second one in the upcomming weeks. If you're on the fence about buying this pump for yourself, i'm telling you to take the jump and get it, you won't regret it.
Great pump By Avkidd on 11/14/2016Avkidd would recommend this product to a friendGreat pump and very strong I have a 55g display tank and it is only running at 50% and I love to program ablility for future upgrades
Loud By Erik on 8/19/2016Erik wouldn't recommend this product to a friendBought this last week and straight out of the box it was incredibly loud. Gave it a few days to see if it quiet down. It didn't. I emailed ecotech with a video of the noises and they are sending me a new dry side. Functionally the pump is awesome all the different modes are great and it moves a lot of water for its size and it looks great in the tank. But for the money it's a little ridiculous this happened right out of the box. Plus the shipping service they use says it's going to take over a week to get me the new dry side. Guess I'll have to put up with that loud pump for week.
Should've been my FIRST pump By Todd on 5/23/2016Todd would recommend this product to a friendAs a new reefer, I "saved" money and went with cheaper eBay brands for my first two pumps. While they did an "ok" job they both lasted less than a year each before going caput. I finally made the investment for a Vortech based on their impeccable reputation in the reefing community. I'm glad I did, from the packaging to the build quality to the support this thing is TOP NOTCH. I'm now a customer for life.
Great product By Diane on 5/11/2016Diane would recommend this product to a friendbest pump I have owned.
Excellent product By Jim on 3/23/2016Jim would recommend this product to a friendGreat water movement nwithout a lot of unsightliness inside the tank. Would definitely buy again
You get what you pay for. By Kyler on 3/11/2016Kyler would recommend this product to a friendI had 2 cheap powerheads that i though was doing an alright job. I bit the bullet and bought one and wow it makes a difference. The build quality is great, and its a a million times better than the powerheads i had. I cant wait to buy another one to replace the others!
Strong & Low Profile By Morris on 3/1/2016Morris would recommend this product to a friendGot the MP10QD (not wireless) for my 29 gallon and of course it's more than enough flow for a tank that size. I like that the motor is on the outside of the tank, it's super strong and practically silent on most modes. It does however make a humming noise when I have it on wave mode, but nothing too loud. All in all, I'm very satisfied with the pump and would definitely recommend it as a main source of flow in a tank of the same or similar size as mine or as supplemental flow in a larger tank. Shout out to BRS on the delivery date, it got to me pretty quick and was on point.
Had my doubts at first, that has now changed By Alex on 2/15/2016Alex would recommend this product to a friendWhen I first got my MP10QD for my 38gallon and hooked it up according to how it's supposed to be setup. I noticed how loud the vibration sound of the impeller was. I could hear it from easily 30 feet away at full speed. This really concerned me and was not impressed at the $235 that I spent on it. I took apart the wet side and inspected everything to make sure nothing was uneven or out of place and everything was fine. So I read reviews of people having the similar problem. They recommended on running it at constant low speed for a few days and slowly increasing the speed by one notch every day or so. It has been one week later and the pump vibration has become undetectable over the existing protein skimmer sounds.
The powerhead itself is strong when at the highest setting and the different settings are nice but I can see them being utilized to the fullest when a second MP10QD is at the opposite side of the tank. It truly has already blown off plenty of my detritus from the sand and rocks when at it highest setting. I can tell that my corals are enjoying increased water flow. Is a little odd knowing that the wet side cannot be pointed in any particular direction except perpendicular with the glass but it is a clean look with I prefer at the end of the day.
