Rock Selection: Due to the wide variety of unique sizes and shape of this rock it is impossible to fulfill orders to exact dimensions but we are happy to make every attempt to get as close as possible if you leave notes on what you are looking for in the order comments section of the checkout.

Shipping Notes: Tonga Shelf can be fragile. BRS makes every effort to securely pack the Tonga Shelf.  However, the UPS automation is not always gentle on heavy products like this and they do not consider this product insurable. Because of this there is some inherent risk with shipping rock like this across the country and it is impossible to replace or refund broken pieces. If this happens most pieces can be repaired with epoxy.

Product Questions

Is there a possibility to get a smaller (under 10lb) shelf piece with the base still attached?
Question by: Dillon on Jun 8, 2014 9:00:00 AM
Hi Dillon,
There really isn't. In order to grow a base these ancient corals grew very large (most of them are 20+ in diameter) and as a result weigh substantially more.

10x20x18

Hi.
I have a 16 gallon tall nano tank with dimensions 20x10x18. I am looking for a shelf rock with base to use in this tank. I know it's impossible to make things perfect but did you have one roughly 8" or so in diameter with the base making the entire rock structure anywhere from 13-15" tall? I was looking to go with one rock structure in this tank. Thanks-
Question by: Pete on Jan 25, 2014 2:52:00 PM
Hi Pete,
The shelf pieces with bases are very very large, in almost all cases there larger then it appears the dimensions of your tank are (they had to grow big to develop a base to begin with). In your case the only shelf rocks that are going to fit in your tank with be the without base pieces (which are usually pieces fragmented off of larger ones).

Approximately how heavy is a 30" piece of shelf rock (no base)?
Question by: Patrick on Jan 18, 2014 12:30:00 AM
HI Patrick,
A 30" piece will almost always have a base and I would expect it to weigh in the ballpark of atleast 30lbs, usually closer to 40-50 depending on the shape and total size.

Shipping: Tonga Shelf can be fragile. BRS makes every effort to securely pack the Tonga Shelf. However, we have no control how UPS handles it and it may break during shipping. Unfortunately this is not covered by insurance so we are unable to replace broken pieces.

Dry live rock is not available for shipment to Canada due to high tariffs. Please consider Reef Saver rock as it is not subject to these fees and is our favorite of the dry rocks available.

Like all of our dry rock Tonga Shelf is free of nuisance algae and pests which can cause complete tank shut downs and is guaranteed to be free of apitasia, bubble algae, parasitic isopods, mantis shrimp, acro eating flat worms, little red bugs, fire worms, predatory nudibranchs, pyramidellid snails and other common pests.

Using Dry Rock has the following advantages:

  • Low initial cost on premium types of rock.
  • Pound for pound a way better value - no water weight.
  • Can be shipped standard UPS ground which saves a fortune on shipping.
  • Absolutely pest free. This is the most important reason. This allows you to completely avoid all of the most common aquarium pests that plague most aquarists.

  • Tonga shelf and 20+ By carmelgu on 5/15/2015

WOW that is a HUGE ROCK!...box looked like an elephant sat on it but it was packed so well in peanuts that everything was well preserved and intact! Totally worth the cha-ching! I wish I could post a picture...maybe BRS could work on that!!! I ordered 15 lbs of flat plate and 20 lbs of the 20+.....awesome choice! tank will be 100 gallons at 5ft long...will probably have to trim the larger piece...we shall see!!! THANK YOU BRS!!!
  • Amazing! By DAVE M on 5/14/2015

Do not hesitate to order this gorgeous rock! The shelf with base I received exceeded my expectations (1 small broken piece that I easily repaired) and is the centerpiece of my aquascape... All I can say is WOW and thanks to BSR!
  • Limit expectations By Adam on 5/4/2015

There was a bit of a mix up on the amount I ordered, but BRS took care of that immediately without any trouble. Great customer service! However, I think the base on the shelf with base rock is probably exaggerated compared to what is normally shipped out. At least in my case it was. Just keep in mind that you're ordering rocks and to keep your expectations limited and you should be fine.
  • Have realistic expectations. By Adam on 4/16/2015

It's easy to look at the pictures of shelf rock with base and have and great a fantast box that you will most certainly receive, but I think the images are extremes to give the customer an idea of the basic structure. Usually the base isn't as well established or as long as what you see in the images. However, the shelves have some wonderful structures. Just remember that the box won't aquascape your tank for you. It's rock in the mail, folks. Take your time to think it through and you'll be happy with what you get in the end. :)

Rock looked good curing it now
  • Great Rock By Glenn on 4/13/2015

I ordered the 20+ plate and received a 26X20" plate. It worked out great in my tanks and was packed well and did not break.
  • Just what my tank needed By kyle on 4/9/2015

These things are perfect! I ordered five pounds and received two nice size pieces. We love the shells that are in them and can't wait to get them in the tank.
  • Nice huge rock By StarFishMan on 3/30/2015

This was a large nice piece of rock. Got confused at first about you have to order qty 20 or more. Thought I might get 20 pieces. Even BETTER. One huge honkin heavy piece that will star to make a dent in my 180 tank. Now still need plenty more! Wonder what 50 qty would get me!

  • Awesome By Tased And Confused on 3/12/2015

Ask and ye shall receive! Ordered 25lbs of tonga shelf with base, and 30lbs flat shelf. Asked for larger pieces...got larger pieces. Shelf with base got a couple prob 15" long, flat shelf got a few 12-15" in diameter. Pretty clean rock, few things to pick off with pliers. Very satisfied overall, thanks!
  • Simply Awesome! By Palmetto Reefer on 3/11/2015

I purchased one large 20" + Shelf Rock and it arrived as a single super large shelf piece. It was packaged with great care which helped it survive the transport. I received exactly what I ordered and it was in perfect condition. It was so large that I decided to make several smaller pieces of shelf, but having the large piece to start from enabled me to chisel out smaller shelf pieces exactly to fit my needs. Extremely satisfied and happy with this purchase!
  • Great rock, but small in size By jent on 2/10/2015

I got 15lb's of the plates at $2.99. Sadly it was a bunch of small pieces of plate...The two largest pieces were only about 4in x 8in. Then I had TONS of small pieces that were closer to 2in x 4in. I am a bit disapointed because I was hoping to make a shelf around 12in, and I just don't see how I will be able to do that given the many, but small, pieces I got.

Ultimately I will probably use the two largest pieces, a couple of the small pieces, and the rest will go into the sump or trash. I sadly don't think I will be able to use most of it.
