Rock Selection: Due to the wide variety of unique sizes and shape of this rock it is impossible to fulfill orders to exact dimensions but we are happy to make every attempt to get as close as possible if you leave notes on what you are looking for in the order comments section of the checkout.

Shipping Notes: Tonga Shelf can be fragile. BRS makes every effort to securely pack the Tonga Shelf.  However, the UPS automation is not always gentle on heavy products like this and they do not consider this product insurable. Because of this there is some inherent risk with shipping rock like this across the country and it is impossible to replace or refund broken pieces. If this happens most pieces can be repaired with epoxy.

Is there a possibility to get a smaller (under 10lb) shelf piece with the base still attached?
Question by: Dillon on Jun 8, 2014 9:00:00 AM
Hi Dillon,
There really isn't. In order to grow a base these ancient corals grew very large (most of them are 20+ in diameter) and as a result weigh substantially more.

10x20x18

Hi.
I have a 16 gallon tall nano tank with dimensions 20x10x18. I am looking for a shelf rock with base to use in this tank. I know it's impossible to make things perfect but did you have one roughly 8" or so in diameter with the base making the entire rock structure anywhere from 13-15" tall? I was looking to go with one rock structure in this tank. Thanks-
Question by: Pete on Jan 25, 2014 2:52:00 PM
Hi Pete,
The shelf pieces with bases are very very large, in almost all cases there larger then it appears the dimensions of your tank are (they had to grow big to develop a base to begin with). In your case the only shelf rocks that are going to fit in your tank with be the without base pieces (which are usually pieces fragmented off of larger ones).
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Jan 25, 2014 2:52:00 PM
Approximately how heavy is a 30" piece of shelf rock (no base)?
Question by: Patrick on Jan 18, 2014 12:30:00 AM
HI Patrick,
A 30" piece will almost always have a base and I would expect it to weigh in the ballpark of atleast 30lbs, usually closer to 40-50 depending on the shape and total size.

Dry live rock is not available for shipment to Canada due to high tariffs. Please consider Reef Saver rock as it is not subject to these fees and is our favorite of the dry rocks available.

Like all of our dry rock Tonga Shelf is free of nuisance algae and pests which can cause complete tank shut downs and is guaranteed to be free of apitasia, bubble algae, parasitic isopods, mantis shrimp, acro eating flat worms, little red bugs, fire worms, predatory nudibranchs, pyramidellid snails and other common pests.

Using Dry Rock has the following advantages:

  • Low initial cost on premium types of rock.
  • Pound for pound a way better value - no water weight.
  • Can be shipped standard UPS ground which saves a fortune on shipping.
  • Absolutely pest free. This is the most important reason. This allows you to completely avoid all of the most common aquarium pests that plague most aquarists.

Shelf rock is comprised of old tabling acropora colonies that will normally form a base or stem when then grow into a table or shelf shape. Upon harvesting they try to retain the base however that does not always happen. The most popular shelf rock is the Shelf with Base option, since most pieces can be manipulated to be free standing and create a very artistic and aesthetically pleasing aquascapes. Shelf rock without base will be a fairly flat plates ranging in thickness and overall shape.

Shelf rocks are naturally made and will vary in overall shape and thickness from piece to piece.

Tonga Shelf (Flat Plates) Dry Live Rock - Pieces can range from a couple inches in diameter up to 19 inches. Shelf (flat plate) pieces will not have a base and can range anywhere from 1/2 inch in thickness up to 2+ inches. These are great for making small overhangs or ledges that you can mount on top of another rock.

BRS Tonga Shelf with Base Dry Live Rock - Pieces can range from a couple inches in diameter up to 19 inches. These pieces will have a base/stem naturally affixed to the shelf from when it was growing in the wild. Shelf with base can be free standing with little to no manipulation of the base/stem.

Tonga Large 20+ Shelf Dry Live Rock - Will be in between 20 inches to 29 inches in diameter at its longest point. Due to its size we are unable to guarantee Large Shelf Rock with a base or without but can certainly take requests.

Tonga Jumbo 30+ Shelf Dry Live Rock - Will be in between 30 inches and larger in diameter at its longest point. Due to its size we are unable to guarantee Jumbo Shelf Rock with a base or without but can certainly take requests.

  • Great Stuff. By Asa on 5/17/2016

That stuff was great. You DO need to figure out what sizes will fit your needs and communicate that when you order this product. I ordered 30” plates that needed to be less than 15” wide and that is what I got. They were BIG and had a nice shape too, very natural. Finally, the staff was a pleasure to work with as well.
  • Awesome By Jack on 5/13/2016

Told BRS the size of my tank and I got 3 awesome pieces. Can not wait to aquascape with them. Very pleased with my order

  • Great Product - Great Service By RJS6711 on 4/7/2016

I love BRS. I read some of the reviews left by other folks and added a description of what I was trying to achieve (as they suggest) in terms of aquascaping for my Reefer 350. Unlike most online retailers, BRS took my request into account and selected pieces for me that fit my needs. That is going way above and beyond. Again, I love this company. I can't wait to get these pieces into my tank. Thank you BRS for the world-class service.
  • Great Rock By Nolan on 4/4/2016

I ordered 20# and got two great pieces. One was a half moon about 18" in Diameter. and another was a long shelf about 10" X 25". I asked for big pieces for a 120 gallon and that is exactly what they sent. Both pieces were less than 2" thick and fairly porous. They look great in my tank, and add a ton of character. I would definitely order from BRS again!
  • Amazing formation! By Nicole on 3/24/2016

I love the rock the guys picked out for me. They really followed what I was looking for. Wishing we could post pictures of what we got.
  • CALL BEFORE ORDERING By craig on 3/23/2016

Marked as 1 star but would recommend to a friend with this caveat... CALL Customer Service at BRS and explain exactly what you are looking for. I paid ~$100 for a rock (lol) and it's not at all what I wanted for the tank. BRS accepted a return/replacement, however a lot of unneeded effort and shipping costs which could have been addressed by a phone call when ordering.
