Great for media By garrison on 4/5/13
garrison would recommend this product to a friendI used this for gfo and carbon. It lets water in easily and doesn't clog -
Works great for me (GFO and carbon) By Nick on 4/3/13
Nick would recommend this product to a friendSo far, the mesh has held up well in my sump, so it does what it says it does. Oh, and in case you like knotting your mesh bags about 600 times, you have PLENTY of drawstring to do just that! -
buy it now, a felt and mesh By Joe on 3/23/13
Joe would recommend this product to a friendOK lots of people use these, however you need a pair every two days to quickly change them out when filled with some serious funk. Or when an angry spouse asks how much longer are you cleaning that thing. I use felt and mesh combined with great results, and yes swap them out quickly. They are easily rinsed, and cleaned with a little chlorine (bleach) and water soaked several hours. Make sure they are thoroughly rinsed of chlorine before they go back in the tank. Great buy! -
Great filter sock By Earl T on 2/21/13
Earl T would recommend this product to a friendI use the 4" bag and stick a bag of Chemipure in it then the tubing from my overflow. Keeps my tank a lot cleaner. Love it. I have two and change it weekly rotating the bags. I want to buy more/ -
Easy to Clean By Moss on 1/28/13
Moss would recommend this product to a friendFilters very well and is extremely easy to clean. It would be better if the stitching was stronger though. -
Decent but not great By David on 1/8/13
David wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI know that I am in the minority but the mesh sock actually clogs up much quicker in my tank than the felt one. The stitching also comes unraveled fairly quickly. The BRS felt socks seem to be made much better and are my preference over this one. -
only bad product on BRS By josh on 1/4/13
josh wouldn't recommend this product to a friendi bought 4 and 2 fell apart almost instantly. the 3rd looks like it isnt going to last long either. and likely the 4th (small one ) will not last long either. the stiching that holds the drawstring in just came undone. i had planned on using these as media bags but now they are just trash. im afraid to use them on my tank for fear of clogging pumps or baffles. -
GREAT PRODUCT By MAREK on 12/4/12
MAREK would recommend this product to a friendVery good quality socks. I’m using only BRS mesh filter socks with draw string for more than 1 year. -

4” x 8” BRS Mesh Filter Sock with Draw String By DrewF on 8/22/12
DrewF would recommend this product to a friendBought this to replace the JBJ Nano cube's default Carbon back. Filled with ROX .8 carbon. Water looks great and is notably cleaner. -
Good product at a fair price By Andy on 7/21/12
Andy would recommend this product to a friendIt is a mesh bag so there is not a lot to go wrong but it is constructed well and I like the drawstring. Some others I have used use a large releasable zip tie and it is cumbersom. -
Nice catching all the junk By Jason on 6/27/12
Jason would recommend this product to a friendI purchased 3 of these mesh socks as well as 3 of their felt counterparts. The draw string makes them very easy to secure in my system. My 60g is lightly stocked at the moment so I only find myself removing these every 5 days or so...not due to clogging, but simply wanting to prevent them from becoming nitrate factories. They effectively capture a large percentage of the particulates in the water (and adventurous pods!) , but if they aren't changed frequently some items (algae, food, etc) will break down and make their way through the mesh material relatively quickly (the felt performs better in this capacity). Overall they've been very effective and completely did away with the salt creep I'd been getting from all the stray bubbles in my overflow/return. All that said, when I want my water to look truly polished I'll pop in the felt socks. Both materials have held up well for me through many (albeit gentle) hand and machine washings.

What micron size are the media bags?
Bulk Reef Supply Hey Rick,
They are 200 micron filter socks. -
by Kiesha on March 5, 2013, @7:36 AM
I tried to use ROX carbon in a regular mesh filter bag (from DFS) and it was a mess. The carbon is so fine it went through the holes in the bag. Are your bags fine enough to use with ROX?
Thanks!Bulk Reef Supply Hey Kiesha,
The ROX is small but these bags will hold the ROX just fine :-)
Filter socks come in mesh or felt and with a plastic ring or draw string. See below for differences and unique advantages.
- Mesh: Thin, doesn't clog as easily as felt
- Felt: Thicker, better at removing particles, but can clog faster
- Plastic Ring: attaches via ring that fits common sump holders
- Draw String: attaches directly to plumbing
- BRS recommends starting with felt socks and switching to mesh if they clog faster than desired.
Filter sock benefits:
- Regular use will result in crystal clear water most convenient form of mechanical filtration.
- Remove excess food, detritus, organic waste, dust and other particulates
- Convenient form of mechanical filtration
- Prevents larger objects like sand, crabs and snails from damaging pump motors
- Reduces ammonia and nitrate producing organic waste
- Increases filter life
