  • Using Filter Socks in Your Reef Tank - EP 4: Saltwater Aquarium Maintenance

Quick Overview

Mesh Filter Socks are used on overflows to remove small floating particles from aquarium water. This can dramatically improve water quality and reduce maintenance on filters that would otherwise become clogged.

Mesh Filter Socks are less effective than felt, but clog less frequently.

Drawstring mesh filter socks are also commonly used to hold filtration medias like carbon and GFO.

Product Questions

Hello I wanted to know if the mesh filter sick with draw string would work with gfo in it. I currently don't have a reactor so I wanted to use this if possible? Thank you

Great question!
You certainly can run the mesh draw string bag with GFO! This will work perfect! Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions.

Full Details

Filter socks come in mesh or felt and with a plastic ring or draw string. See below for differences and unique advantages.

  • Mesh: Thin, doesn't clog as easily as felt
  • Felt: Thicker, better at removing particles, but can clog faster
  • Plastic Ring: attaches via ring that fits common sump holders
  • Draw String: attaches directly to plumbing
  • BRS recommends starting with felt socks and switching to mesh if they clog faster than desired.

Filter sock benefits:

  • Regular use will result in crystal clear water most convenient form of mechanical filtration.
  • Remove excess food, detritus, organic waste, dust and other particulates
  • Convenient form of mechanical filtration
  • Prevents larger objects like sand, crabs and snails from damaging pump motors
  • Reduces ammonia and nitrate producing organic waste
  • Increases filter life

  • Very good By JohnV on 5/12/2016

I especially like the way water flows through it. Perfect for carbon and GFO.
  • Draw String is perfect By Chelmon rostratus on 5/7/2016

I have tried the mesh and felt socks from BRS both are excellent products , I prefer the mesh much easier to clean, fit my refugium better, last longer between changes. Felt needs changed about every 3 days, mesh will last 1 to 2 days longer with my tank.
  • Positive Review By Jason on 2/16/2016

Mesh bag does exactly what I need it to do. Right now it holds carbon, be sure to wash the carbon before you introduce the bag into your system. Soon the bag will hold media since I will run carbon through a reactor.

  • ok but rather have 100 micron By Join the Revolution on 8/4/2015

Good, but 100 micron will crush the 200 nominal mesh drawstring micron-rating, just saying.

  • good quality By Paul on 12/27/2014

It seems to be well made. I tied it around my return, but it filled with air and wanted to float to the surface, so I took it off and no longer use it.
