We are beginning a new series and it is all about Apex Aquarium Controllers from Neptune Systems. These controllers and monitors are extremely popular because they can make the maintenance of your saltwater aquarium a breeze. All you have to do is set it up properly and you are on your way. In this first episode, we answer the question - so I just ordered by Neptune Apex, what should I do before it arrives? 1. Where are you going to plug it in? Since water is involved, it is essential to have a GFCI outlet either within your home or as part of the power strip. You may also want to consider a surge protector to protect the investment of the Apex controller and your reef tank. 2. How will you connect to the internet? You can use the display pad on the Apex but it is much easier to program via the internet. If there is a direct ethernet connection use it, if it doesn't put one in if you have the ability to add one do it, nothing beats a direct connection. If you don't have that ability the Apex can be connected via a wireless access point, game adaptor or similar product. While they don't officially support it Neptune's suggested device is the Netgear WNCE 2001. 3. How are you going to mount the gear? You can attach all the gear to a cabinet or wall but it is popular to attach to a mounting board for easy removal - using a prefab shelf works great. Be sure to manage all the cords with inexpensive clips and zip ties. 4. Finally, begin reading the manual to familiar yourself with all the features and functions of your new Apex Controller.
