  • Decent product By CH on 9/18/2017

Have had this skimmer for about 8 months. Very quiet...darn near silent. Very well built. Seemed like it took several weeks to break in and find its normal operating performance. No instructions related to tuning it. I would suggest an online video. Initially had a large problem with microbubbles getting into my display. Not sure if it was a combination of tuning and the unit settling in or what, but it eventually subsided. Air intake is very sensitive and needs choked down significantly. Because the final adjusted air opening ends up being very small it collects small amounts of dust that end up changing the amount of air the unit gets. When it does it restricts air which eventually causes the volume of water in the unit to rise and can contribute to skimmer cup overflow potential. If you clean it frequently, no problems, but you then have to dial the air back in...there is no reference to that air dial position which is a hassle. Skimz should build in some sort of skimmer overflow into the cup design so this emergency overflow back into the sump could be directed to the "best" place for it. Overall might be a better skimmer out there, not sure, has skimmed well with a little hassle,.would buy it again.
  • Not impressed By david on 5/11/2017

  • The quietest monster you will find By Praz on 3/14/2017

    This thing delivers all claims
  • Easy setup and great results By Kate on 2/8/2017

Great skimmer, easy to setup and within 24 hours it was producing skimmate. It seems solid and well made. It's been two weeks and the tank has never looked so good. 120g fish and coral medium load and I can add in a few more fish now that I have this skimmer working so well.
  • Nice Product! By 120 gal reef on 12/12/2016

Quality of build is very good. Replaced an old aqua medic turbo floater skimmer with this model and it was easy to set up and tune. Was producing foam in two days and is dead silent. Although it isn't visible when looking at BRS site the skimmer cup does come with a drain in the event you wanted to pipe to a larger collection container.
  • Totally a junk skimmer By Maggie on 11/7/2016

I purchased this skimmer due to BRS carries warranty, I thought I could use with confidence, but it is not. The pump died twice within a year, overflow happened every time after water change, BRS knows the pump has defect issue, but they still only could replace the junk pump to customer, they also recommend to sell the junk to other reefer, and get the money to buy other brand. I'm so disappoint with the solution they provide.
  • Excellent By Chris on 10/30/2016

Started skimming from day one and you could feel the quality in this product. The screw water adjuster is a little shakey but no problems as of yet. BRS as always answered all questions I had with this product right away. Very happy
  • Very Happy! By john on 8/3/2016

    It's well made
    Super quiet DC pump
    Looks great
    Super easy to tune
    Competitively priced
Backed by BRS (get replacement parts direct from them)
    Great skimming performance

    Have yet to find one

This Skimz model is really a no brainer if you need a new or skimmer. I have a new Red Sea 120 gallon tank and replaced the existing skimmer (what a piece of junk) with this new Skimz. Within hours I realized the Skimz was doing a much, much better job of removing waste. The other feature I was most interested in resolving with the Skimz was noise, and this skimmer did not let me down. It makes virtually zero noise with the DC pump. I couldn't be happier with this purchase.
  • Superior Skimmer By FLSharkvictim on 6/22/2016

I have owned many skimmers in the past and nothing compares to the Skimz Monzter SM163 DC. I just got mine last week and already it's pulling out nasty brown stuff out of my tank. Normally break in time can be anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months depending on the skimmer and the mfg. My friend bought the Vertex Omega and he has had it for about a month and it's still not broke in. It's funny b/c his wife complaints all the time on how loud the skimmer is when running.. i have owned a Reef Octopus, DelTech and a Aqua Medic and none of them are in the same league as the Skimz Monzter series. I have never heard such a quite skimmer in my life. Another plus on the Skimz line is you dont have to deal with the MFG in Singapore, BRS handles all of the returns or any issues you are having with the skimmer and as well as replacement parts..We all know how hard it can be when dealing with some of these MFG'S. Also, you can't even tell my 163 dc is running if you have my cabinet doors closed. I give this skimmer 5 stars across the board and would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone that wants a top of the line skimmer.
  • Very happy to have customer service from the BRS team By Justin w on 6/10/2016

So I did a lot of research before selecting this skimmer for my reefer 450 Red Sea tank. Break in was very quick. Good thick dark skimmate within 24 hours. Issue was a week or two the pump started making a loud noise. It went away. I emailed the brs team and they offered to replace it as well as tips to check if I wanted to. I told them hold off and let me see if I just had it adjusted wrong. Few days later the noise was back. I emailed back and they asked me to call. I called on a Tuesday and they without question offered a new pump and shipped it that day and I'll have it tomorrow. Amazing customer service. Very happy with the crew here
  • Great Skimmer By Robert on 6/9/2016

only have had it running a week out preforms my old skimmer hands down, love all the fine tuning you can do with this skimmer best of all BRS takes care of all the warranty on them . I would recommend this skimmer to anybody looking for a high performance skimmer .
  • Awesome By Jeff on 4/21/2016

Quick easy set up, fast break in period, producing dark Skimmate after lees than a day, . I have recently reengaged and upgraded my reef keeping game. This new Skimmer was a big part of my system upgrade. Love the DC pump feature. High quality and great function, I looked at a lot of other skimmers and I'm gland I went with this one.

Product Questions

Does this particular skimmer have a drain tube on the collection cup? I noticed the other models having one but not sure on this one. Thanks
Question by: Simon T. on Jan 15, 2017 12:28:00 PM
Great question! This does have a skimmer cup drain! It looks like it is hiding in the product photo, but I assure you it is there! :-)

I just bought the skimz 163 dc skimmer i am wondering how do you get rid of the microbubbles
Question by: Peter hand on Mar 23, 2016 6:57:00 PM
Great question!
Micro bubbles unfortunately can be a little tricky to control on a skimmer if they are appearing right away. Typically solutions include raising or lower the physical height of the skimmer in the water. lowering or raising the gate valve which allows the bubbles out and adjusting the air silencer to restrict the air flow. Bubbles will often occur on lower bio-load systems and often taking used skimmate and pouring into the body of the skimmer can change the bubble size. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

What is the major benefit of a DC variable speed skimmer?
Question by: Matt on Nov 21, 2016 3:44:00 PM
Great question! A DC pump will allow you another level of adjust-ability and fine tuning of the skimmer, run quieter, and draw less amps than an AC powered pump! :-)

Is the pump APEX compatible? That is, does it have a 0-12v input for external control?
Question by: Steve Sutherland on Jul 24, 2016 1:30:00 PM
Hi Steve,
The DC controller that is included with Skimz Skimmer pumps do not have the ability to be controlled by an external controller.
Thanks for the question and if you have any more, just let us know.
