Best Investment Ever!
I hated changing socks every couple days. I would either forget or not have a clean one ready in time. I hated socks so much I stopped using them all together and ran sockless for 9 months. Until this compact version came out. I ordered it the first week it was available and I’m so glad I did. This was the best investment ever. I’m amazed with the build quality of these units. Plug and play out of the box. I did have to reverse the emergency overflow bulk head as i didn’t have enough room between the skimmer and the roller mat to fit them both in the first compartment. But a very quick flip and it fits perfect. If you are on the fence about this product I would say to stop thinking about it and buy one immediately. You won’t be disappointed. If I can get 2-3 months out of one roll then that’s less money, time and effort vs filter socks. For around $6 a month to run the roll it’s absolutely worth it. I’m so happy with this product, thanks to Bulk Reef Supply for everything they do!
So, when I first saw these idea for roller mat sumps a couple years ago I was in awe. Now seeing this compact unit, that easily just sits or hangs on the side of your sump at a very reasonable cost I had to give it a try. I have always used sub 50 micro socks and sometime will rotate in even 10 or 5 micro socks to super polish the water. Needless to say on my 90G system these socks dont last very long before they need changed, ranging from 1 day to 2 for an older sock that has been washed a couple times. I really did not mind changing socks but my job will require me to travel worldwide in 2019 and my wife does not enjoy changing socks, thus a new roller mat and after I saw this bad boy and decided lets give it a try.
It got here before advertised as I was in no super rush but I was still delighted to see it on my front stoop. The unit is bigger then I thought it would be but it will will hangon/sit within a 20L I tested it on so that size or larger will work fine for sumps. It took all of 3 minutes to pull the drain line from the sock holder and place it in the tapered inlet. I plugged the unit in and as I have highly polished water already the water level has stayed low thus far. There is a button to manually advance the felt on the back side and that works well.
The instructions indicate that the felt insert will last 3 to 4 months. I doubt that but maybe it is true. If I get 30 days out of each refill I will be extremely happy and any over that will be a bonus.
I also like the clean look this have given my sump over the dirty overflowing sock if I wait to long and the noise. The roller mat seems to be built well and is such a basic idea I am kicking myself for not jumping into the scene earlier. I am happy with the Brand though and look forward to many sock free days ahead! I will update this post should I have any issues.
If your thinking about it, its is a great buy, wont regret it.
Amazing!!! Best thing to happen to my sump.
I am so happy that I got this roller-mat. It came assembled so it was super easy to install. Getting rid of my filter socks is going to make me enjoy this hobby even more. My tank is looking better, I was using the course filter socks so it wasn't trapping the fine detritus. The filter roller traps very small particles and advances flawlessly when it gets spent.
I am in love!!!! I would recommend this in a second.
Update to flow
Now that this has been running for over a week I have been able to up my flow to 500gph and am using about 2-3 inches of fleece a day. I guess that my water had a lot more gunk in it than I thought. I would have to say this has been one of the best purchases for my tank since I got the Apex system.
Amazing amount of gunk not going into tank
This unit functions very well and appears to be well built and very sturdy. The legs that come with it are useless unless you have a very shallow sump. The hang on tank clip on the side works great. I have a full Apex system and can tell you if you try to put 500 gph through it you will go through the paper in about a week. I have dialed my Cor20 back to have about 350gph which seems to be a good compromise. I have used about 10" of fleece per day and the fleece is VERY dirty. I stopped running socks about a year ago due to having to change 3 socks twice a week and hearing the constant complaints of "those disgusting things" in the washing machine. The water is noticeably cleaner and the price of the fleece is well worth it.
