I am using the "recommended" external siccie pump dedicated to only this. The fill hole is at the top. The unit is recommended to sit in now higher than 4" of water - so I had to build a stand for it in my sump. It does not appear to rotate automatically and I have to manually push the button to advance roller. Really wish this could be automated task with the apex.
Great idea, questionable execution.
I love how clean my tank is now and no more rinsing gross filter socks. However it’s been a little over 3 weeks and I’m already needing to replace the drive motor. Now it’s only 25 bucks but still... I am confident that this is the exception and not the rule.
Yes there are smaller units out there but rolls on this one last longer. My buddy has one that drops in to a filter sock holder and he goes though rolls about once a month. I’m maybe a 1/3 through mine in the same time frame.
And as for metric components, I just used the barbed adapter and did soft hosing to connect it. So not really much of a hurdle to overcome.
Not compact by any means!
Impossible fleece filter to fit anywhere! Inlet adapter is too high and the base is wide. Unless you have a new sump or a diy sump it's almost impossible to use. Not to mention the European plug and metric bulkheads. A total headache!
I just changed my first roll.never want to use another filter sock again.this thing is worth every penny.
Simple design that works
I avoid some the the new trendy gadgets but this looked so useful I tried it a year or so after it was released. Very easy to use and effective at polishing water, I run at a slower rate and it took a few days to fill chamber with a new clean roll than took off. BRS carries parts but can not see any problems if handled carefully. It follows the European design model of their plastics so handle carefully.
Replacement Fleece filter issue
I do recommend the product itself. This device is literally a reefers dream but they managed to ruin that with their replacement fleece rolls.
When you grab the product it comes with a huge roll of this nice felt material that cleans the tank right up. When you order the replacement cartridge you get this transparent cheap roll that lets detritus run right through it. I opened the packaging and realized i can see my hand holding it on the other side im like WHAT THE..... i used it anyway and a few days in i already see detritus forming on the bottom of my sump when the old roller mat filter that came with the device grabbed everything. now im back to constant siphoning of the sump every 2 weeks. I need to find the original material and order it cut to size somewhere.
I would 100000% recommend this product and would never run a tank without it if had the chance. Completely eliminates the need for filter socks at the expense of none of your time!
Forget about a filter sock
After running this, I can't believe anyone would ever willingly use filter socks. True, it requires some dexterity when swapping the rolls but it's simple once you get the hang of it. No broken parts like one reviewer experienced. Also, I threaded a sch 80 union on top with no problem - just add extra teflon tape to the threads and it will seal up just fine. Don't overthink it. My setup is in a RedSea 425XL sump. I cut out all of the filter sock arrangement to make it fit. Running about 450gph through it and rolls are lasting 3-4 weeks. On the awesomeness scale, I put this right behind automatic water changes. Forget the socks and buy one already!
The design is very wierd, especially when trying to replace a roll of fleece. It is very easy to break the float switch. Luckily they offer a replacement. I assume this is because they break quite often. You must remove the float to remove the insert that holds the cloth down... and then you can dissassemble the rollers to put a new roll on. Its a pain... especially in a tight sump location. I would recommend that anyone attempting to use this device has extra clearance around and above the device to manuver it in and out of the sump.
Conceptually it’s great there are a few problems that I’ve encountered
1) the water intake accommodates a 1.5 inch Union and the output will accommodate 1inch pipe ( with adapter) why make the output smaller then the input. If you're pushing a lot of water through it, you will overcome the emergency drain and soak your entire fleece.
2) if the unit sits inside your sump and the water level in the sump rises above the float switch in the rollermat for some reason, you will roll through whatever fleece you have left
3) if using a union or a valve at the input, it’s not so easy to change the fleece as it takes some maneuvering to avoid knocking the float switch off its holder when removing the fleece positioning holder
With some minor modifications this would be 5 stars all day
