Incredibly robust sump and skimmer combo!
So having a few bucks to spend on myself the 2016 holiday season, I decided it was time to upgrade the sump on my 75 gallon reef tank. I'd been using an old wet/dry 'repurposed' as a sump, and the room just wasn't there for everything I wanted to run. I saw the price on the Somatic 60 kit, I saw what the package offered and I figured 'what the heck'...
What the heck indeed!!!! I expected some flimsy, floppy poorly glued acrylic mess, instead I got a sump that I want to show off as much as my display tank. Thick acrylic, smoothly rounded edges, and the skimmer, while only rated for 80g max, is an absolute DREAM to tune. The sump itself has a single baffle to decrease bubbles getting to the main display tank, I ran a PVC pipe down to the very bottom of the drain area, inside a filter sock, and drilled a spiral of holes to compensate for the lack of multiple baffles.
The only reason this gets a 4 instead of a 5 is where the skimmer's internal pump connects to the bubble plate, the connector arrived split at the threads. Whether it had been overtightened or whether United Package Smashers had their way with it, I could not tell. A little PVC glue and a few minutes of impatience holding the piece while it set and it was good as new, and is still holding perfect.
To sum it up. This is an excellent sump, and a SUPER addition to any build 75g and under. I won't lie, the modular design is both a blessing and a curse. I think the filter sock holder should be an automatic addition, As should the drain cover (Which I purchased later, Again, VERY high quality on the manufacture of this stuff.).
