UPDATE OF EARLIER REVIEW
I have been using this method for de-nitration for almost 5 yrs. it has worked great for me. When I first started using it I was getting the white gunk but after getting it dialed in with my doser, the gunk started going away. It seems as if you need to monitor the nitrates and bring them down slowly, Dosing pump is the best way to use this. If I let the nitrates raise a little to say 2-3 ppm, I increase the doser very slight for 2 days and then back to my normal setting. I never need to alter my doser setting but very little. I like nitrates at about 1-2 ppm. My 250 gal DT has been up and running since 12- 2006. I tried 3 different types, scrubber, sulfur and frequent water changes and this is the best yet. I do water changes every other month, yes 2 months. 2 large sps - 5 lps -and many softies. 12 fish with 3 large tangs. I have saved boat loads of salt. I save about $400 per year on salt and spend about $150 per year on NOPO. My tank is happy, I'm happy and spending less on salt makes my wife happy. I dose Alk, Cal & Mag with BRS pharma. I have a Spectra pure doser for the NOPO and it has been very reliable. Calibrate it once a year and it doesn't change any settings, it's spot on. I dose the ACM with an old Aqua medic 3 gang that just won't quit. I don't want to dose with WIFI or rely on my Apex for that. I test weekly and make any adjustments with the 3 part manually. This NOPO would give me 0 at all times if I wanted it to, but running this tank 1-1.5 ppm is good.
THIS STUFF WORKS, PERIOD.
This product saved my tank
I had a terrible problem with a very stubborn outbreak of green hair algae. My tank was even being maintained by a professional. It was obvious that my levels were out of control even though they tested very well. I tried turning lights out, reducing feeding frequency, and increasing water flow, but the algae kept spreading. I lost approximately 75% of all my coral, and almost any part of my tank that you could see was covered in green hair algae. I found this product and had decided that this was my last attempt to save my tank and if it didn't work I was going to start over. I started at the recommended high dose and following other directions to the letter. After a few days I noticed some of the algae changing color and becoming slightly stringy. Being a little desperate i upped the dosage and started noticing a while filmy look to the water. I recognized that this was a sign of overdosing so I backed off to the recommended amounts. Every day I saw more and more algae changing color and breaking off the rock into the water column and into my filters. Before the first bottle was used, there was virtually no sign of green hair algae in my tank AT ALL. Now several months later I have the healthiest tank Ive ever had. I now use this product if I ever feel like I over feed, or if a fish/invert, etc dies and I worry that my levels will spike. I absolutely cannot stress enough how well this product did exactly what is said it would do. It literally saved me thousands of dollars in starting over. Please try this if you are fed up with other methods and think nothing will work, This product will save your tank.
Amazing for Nutrient Control
This product is amazing for nutrient control. Probably hands down the best product I use for my 150g mixed reef tank. In conjunction with my skimmer and bio-pellets my nutrient levels Phosphate and nitrate are rock solid. I used this to counter an out of control algae bloom and it did wonders with the 3 day black out method.
Great Nutrient Control
Awesome product once you get to know it. I made the mistake by not letting my aquarium cycle and started using nopox to get my numbers down. using the recommended dose i got bad slime and a major dino outbreak. I stopped nopox raised my nitrates back to 80 with sodium nitrate then when dinos and slime stopped and my tank was cycled i only dosed 6ml for my 120 for 1 month and now my phosphate is steady at .06 and nitrate is at 1 and finally I cut back my dose to 2ml per day with heavy tank feedings, my tank has never looked better. word of caution is to use way under the recommended dose and start slow. also a great idea to dose red sea energy a and b to keep those coral colors. now that i know how to use this i love it very simple.
It kills/hinders the growth of algae as advertised. Dosing 5ml on my 210 since 10ml seemed to stress out a lot of my corals. Within two weeks most if not all of the algae in my tank was gone.
Does what it says, and no adverse side effects
I had a massive algae outbreak in a very new tank with only a few things in it. I moved as much livestock as I could to my already very established additional tank, and begin dosing this. Within 2 weeks, my NO3 had dropped, and the algae has cleared up significantly.
best silent/ulm method of no3+po4 reduction
I have my tank in my bedroom so silence is a must. I've looked into chaeto reactors, biopellets and refugiums - they all had one thing in common, noise from something running 24/7, increased maintenance or spending $$$ on a light that will be on while I'm sleeping. I already dose 2 part through a doser so I got this instead. It doses 4ml at 1PM everyday and that's it. No pump noise, no reactors to clean, no cheato to harvest, no large refugium taking space, and no extra light in the room. I will keep buying until Red Sea stops making this.
Works when others won't
I had high phosphates from an unknown source and I tried everything to get them down but nothing worked. I tried Rowaphos, ALR 99, GFO, Phosguard, etc but this is the only product that helped me. I add about 2ml once a week now to my Reefer 250 and I never have phosphates or nitrates.
Stuff just works great on my SPS reef tanks.
I used to use Purigen, carbon, bio-pellet reactor, Chemi-Pure Blue and just about everything else, with frequent water changes, and ALWAYS was fighting NO3/PO4 issues. Got this stuff (which sells like nail polish remover BTW) and I've cut out all other additives and have absolute great water parameters. I wish I would have started using it earlier, had it, opened the bottle and thought "I'm not putting acetone in my tank!", but finally did and it works wonders. Love the stuff and sooo much less hassle and cost than a bunch of other expensive measures that just don't work very well.
May take a little bit to get dialed in
This is a great product and is super easy to dose daily on my 60 gal system. It did take a bit to get my system balance, as I had a phosphate imbalance in my system. I added GFO, even though it says not to, to bring the nitrate/phosphate balance inline. Now that the system is stable, I don't even bother testing for nitrates/phosphates anymore.
