Tuning Your New LED Light

Most LED lights will actually put out more light than your corals will actually need and without a PAR Meter to test the overall output, it is really hard to guess if the light is too dim or intense. We highly suggest using a PAR Meter to test the output of your lights at different points throughout your tank that you can use to tune the lights output or know where to put specific corals.

Product Questions

I have a 220 gallon tank 2'x2'x6' so doing the math I need three of them. I am looking to grow SPF and LPS. To balance the light I am looking to rent a PAR meter but how do I know how to program the light and what should the par be? Or is there a better light for this?
Question by: Ben on Oct 12, 2019, 7:40 AM
Hey there-

Great question! For programming your light I would recommend checking out AI's Signature Series: https://www.aquaillumination.com/lightsciences/signature-series which offer various downloadable presets (the david saxby setting is the one I use). From there it is a simple 3 finger swipe in the app to adjust the intensity up or down to get the desired PAR levels, which for your tank would range anywhere from 75 - 300 depending on the specific coral , with 250 PAR being the sweet spot to accommodate for the widest range of coral.

Happy reefing! c:

I have a 75 48Lx18Dx21H I’m doing a mixed tank and want to know if 2 of the 26s would be okay? And how is the spectrum? I want to focus on blues but overall?
Question by: Seth on Feb 3, 2019, 12:36 AM
Thanks for contacting BRS!
Two AI Hydra 26s would work well over a mixed reef tank that size. The spectrum of the light is fully adjustable, but I recommend checking out the video below where we show how to match the AB+ spectrum from Ecotech with this light. Have a great day!

What cable hanging kit could I use to hang only 1 of these with?
Question by: Rich on Nov 22, 2017, 5:03 PM
Hey there,

For one more multiple Hydra lights, you'll want to purchase the EXT rail sections, and then the EXT Hanging kit will allow for suspension when attached to the rails.

Have a great day!

Would using one of these be better than a single prime over a nuvo 40?
Question by: Martin on Nov 21, 2017, 4:01 AM
The Hydra 26 will provide a significant boost in output and coverage area over the Prime. The Hydra 26 will provide good coverage out to about 24", which is nearly ideal for a mixed reef Nuvo 40. If you plan to do strictly sps, you may find that there is some drop off on the outer edges of the tank. Though not significant, you will want to bear this in mind for coral placement.

I have a 190 gal corner tank 43x43x43 from corner to center of bow it is 36" deep would 3 hydra 26hd work or what do you recommend
Question by: Ed on Nov 16, 2017, 8:06 PM
Three Hydra 26 units would be great over your tank. Corner tanks can be difficult to cover completely and a lot has to do with your specific aquascape and coral placements, But the 26 units will defiantly have the power to give you enough power to get to the bottom of the tank. After coral grows or if your aquascape has a lot of ledges and caves, a fourth light may be needed.

Are these controllable through the reef keeper like the gen 1 SOLs were?
Question by: Glen Wheelock on Jun 8, 2017, 8:11 AM

The new AI HD fixtures are controlled completely wirelessly and do not require a controller or remote. They can connect directly through wifi to a mobile device. As a result they no longer connect to controllers such as the Neptune Apex or RKL/RKE.

Happy reefing!

Great question! I would recommend two of these lights for your 24" x 24" tank! That will be sufficient for the LPS and Softies. :-)

How many do you neeed for a 120g 4824x24?
Question by: mars on Nov 12, 2016, 4:30 AM
Great question! At a minimum, I would have to say you will need three, but for even spread and decent PAR four would be better. With that in mind, you may consider two of the Hydra52s. :-)
Answer by: Randy on Nov 14, 2016, 2:18 PM
How many would I use for a 72Lx18Wx22H tank? Also what are the options for mounting this besides hanging off a ceiling?
Question by: Anthony on Nov 7, 2016, 7:20 PM
Great question! For proper spread and PAR to cover your entire tank, I would have to recommend a minimum of four of these fixtures. As far as mounting options, other than hanging, AI has the RMS Tank Mount System listed below. You would need one for each of the light fixtures as well as an RMS bracket for each. :-)

If these cant work with Apex then why does the apexfusion have a virtual outlet named Hydra for lightening? Just as it has for Radion. Thank you
Question by: Robert Escher on Jun 20, 2016, 6:07 AM
Great question!
The Apex did used to work with the Old model Hydra 26. the new HD models have lost controlability with the AWM module from Neptune Systems

Can these work with apex
Question by: Robert Escher on Jun 16, 2016, 4:55 PM

Great question!
These will not work with the Apex, Only through the My AI app or through the AiFi control built into the light. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions.
Answer by: Connor on Jun 16, 2016, 5:00 PM
Would three of these work well in my 120 gallon mixed reef build? It is a standard 6' long x 2' tall tank.Or should I go with two of the larger Hydra's? I have two braces equally spaced on the top of the tank (rimmed with these two braces running front to back) and am concerned about shadow effect if I only use two of the larger Hydra's, where if I use 3 of these guys I can put them in each of the spaces between the braces.
Question by: Jason Eddy on Jun 13, 2016, 1:50 PM
-1
Great question!
We recommend 3 of the Hydra 26's which will have a spread of 24" x 24" each. This will eliminate the shadowing concern. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
