Quick Overview

Why does BRS recommend this?

BRS Recommends Kalkwasser for almost all reef tanks, to help with calcium and alkalinity demand, as well as elevate pH as it is dosed.  Kalkwasser is probably one of the easiest all in one 2 part additives to incorporate into a system.  The starter package includes everything you need to begin dosing Kalkwasser and maintaining calcium, alkalinity and magnesium.  Use BRS Bulk Kalkwasser for maintaining parameters on a day to day basis and other supplements for larger occasional adjustments.

BRS Bulk Kalkwasser Starter Package Includes:

  • BRS Bulk Kalkwasser (1 Gallon)

  • BRS Bulk Calcium Chloride (1 Gallon)

  • BRS Bulk Sodium Bicarbonate (1 Gallon)

  • BRS Bulk Magnesium Mix (Makes 1 Gallon)

  • 100mL Measuring Cup

  • Funnel

All supplements meet strict BRS quality standards.

Full Details

Kalkwasser (Calcium Hydroxide) is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to add calcium and alkalinity to a reef tank as well as maintain pH. It is typically mixed with RO water and slow dripped or dosed using an auto top off system. The BRS Bulk Kalkwasser Starter Package includes all the additives necessary to raise calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium before using Kalkwasser to maintain the tank.

The items in this package are designed to be used in the following ways.

  • Kalkwasser - This will be used for daily dosing to maintain calcium and alkalinity levels as well as elevate the tanks pH.  Because this product does elevate the pH, it is important to dose slowly in small amounts.  This product is designed to be used daily to continually replace calcium and alkalinity as it is consumed and not to make large adjustments.
  • Calcium Chloride - This is used to make larger adjustments to calcium levels. This product has no effect on the tank's pH so it is possible to make larger changes to calcium levels in single doses.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate - This is used to make larger adjustments to the tank's alkalinity levels. Sodium bicarbonate does have a small temporary lowering effect on the tank's pH. It is possible to make relatively large adjustments to the tank's alkalinity without a major impact on the tank's pH but it is wise to monitor the tank's pH while dosing.
  • Magnesium Mix - Dosed occasionally to maintain magnesium levels. Maintaining correct magnesium levels helps prevent calcium and alkalinity from precipitating and makes maintaining correct parameters much easier.

  • Awesome Product By Will on 4/30/2017

Love how easy it makes the process of keeping calcium leveled out and also the benefits of raising Ph. I got the starter pack which made it easy to adjust the base levels of alkalinity, calcium and magnesium and all I do is add the kalk to the ATO and it takes care of the rest I just have to test magnesium and make adjustments very seldom
  • Nano size should be available- Good product By gunchy on 4/18/2017

I liked the product and the directions were clear. I am using the kalkwasser for two weeks now and my calcium and alkalinity level are where they should be. However, BRS should have a nano version since many people will not use all of the product.
  • Kalkwasser is awesome By Scott on 1/29/2016

Recently order this starter kit as it is my first time dosing Kalk. Everything I needed was included and it makes it so easy. Well done.
  • Great product, could do better with instructions. By David on 11/21/2015

Everything is high quality and wonderful. The instructions are generally clear, but require that you read them a few times. Just double check yourself, i almost read them wrong the first time.
  • Did the trick, but it's far more than I needed By BBGoby on 3/9/2015

I got everything up to where it needs to be this weekend, particularly the ALK, from about 4-9 over about an eight hour period, and Mg from 1200-1350. Calcium was OK. Having done this, I can now I can add Kalkwasser in my ATO in an attempt to keep ALK in range. So all good, but for my 32G it's far more than I need so I've got a lot of Starter package left over. Too bad they don't have a nano version, or the like.
  • Great Starter Kit--improved with a Total Package Option By Stephen on 3/22/2014

Another hit from BRS! This package, coupled with the videos and other instructions, is a terriffic way into the world of Kalkwasser.

One recommendation would be to offer a "total" package that includes the gallon jugs, the 1oz. dispensing pumps, and perhpas a 1 gallon mixing container. Secondly consider, placing the "You Will Also Need" segment from the printed instruction sheet under "Full Details."
  • Great product By Jaime on 3/5/2014

I'm new to reefing. Bought this product based on the YouTube videos. After 3 weeks my tank looks much better. I currently have 1 frag of zoanthids and since I started dosing they look much healthier and have started to multiply.
  • great kit By Jason on 9/1/2013

this is a great kit and has everything to get your numbers up and keep them up. seems very pure and performs just as expected.
  • Volume of Value By Jonathan on 2/20/2013

Holy powder Batman!! Ton of Volume!!! Perfect Kit to get things going in the right direction. Follow instructions+ watch videos+ use calculator=perfection every time!
  • Great value By Samuel on 1/3/2013

You really do get alot for what you pay for maybe to much(not a bad thing). The videos helped me out alot as I was new to dosing. Mixing each element was not as hard as I thought it would be either. This is an all around awesome package.

After I got all my parameters where I wanted them I didn't think I would need the alk or cal solution but after a few water changes I noticed my cal jumped up but my alk didn't. I had to stop using kalk for a little bit til my cal went back down and dosed only the alk solution to keep it stable.

This is an all around awesome package.
  • Great Product! By Greg on 9/15/2012

Great additives and at a great price as well. The sodium bicarbonate can be a pain to mix up, but it does it's job well.
  • Great Starter By Shoei on 6/16/2012

Easy to understand directions and if you don't' they have videos on how to on here. Was packaged great no spills or damaged and its just a overall great starter product. Highly recommened for new reef tanks.

Dosing instructions on Magnesium

I purchased this starter kit and mixed the entire bag of magnesium mix into a full gallon container- not a gallon of actual water in it, is that correct?

Also, for the life of me I can not find the dosing instructions once mixed. Could you point me in the right direction?

Question by: Kelly on May 9, 2016 7:51:00 AM
Great question!
Correct, You will mix this will the appropriate amount of water to make 1 gallon of total solution. this means you use less than 1 gallon of water. For dosing the correct amount into your aquarium you will use our aquarium calculator.

Is there a shelf life on the additives?
Question by: Nathan Boone on Nov 16, 2017 12:34:00 PM
Kalkwassers shelf life is pretty much infinite. Just as long as it is stored in a cool dry place, it should last quite a long time. : )
Answer by: Charlie (Admin) on Nov 18, 2017 8:02:00 PM
I've researched a little and thought kalkwasser only was okay?..why 3 different additives here?
Question by: Bryan on Jun 18, 2016 7:10:00 PM
Thanks, Brian! The additional RS Bulk Calcium Chloride, BRS Bulk Sodium Bicarbonate, BRS Bulk Magnesium Mix are included to boost your Ca/Alk/Mag to the appropriate levels before starting the Kalkwasser solution. :-)

Does the kalkwasser starting package come with written instructions in dosing recommendations?
Question by: LLOYD MARLER on Jun 19, 2016 11:57:00 AM
Great question! The mixing instructions are printed on the Kalkwasser containers. We also list the mixing instructions on our website at :-)
Answer by: Randy (Admin) on Jun 21, 2016 5:28:00 PM
So how do I dose all of these? Do I just add the powder or do I have to mix it in water like the kalk. Also is magnesium levels necessary in a softie/LPS tank?
Question by: Anthony on Nov 26, 2016 9:02:00 PM
Great question! The Alk, Calcium, and Magnesium that is included in the package is intended to make gallon solutions. You use these solutions, with our calculator, to raise those levels to the levels you desire to maintain with the Kalkwasser. :-)
Answer by: Randy (Admin) on Nov 27, 2016 9:41:00 AM
I starting to add some corals to my 65 gallon tank.
My alk is always around 11.8 using Red Sea pro salt.
Calcium is around 380.
MG is at 1350.
From what i have read, it sounds like the Kalkwasser starter would be the way to go right?
Question by: JOHN HOWE on Jul 19, 2016 6:47:00 PM
Hi John,
With a minimal amount of corals kalkwasser will normally keep up with the demand of the tank. There are a couple variables like evaporation rate, and the potency of the kalkwasser solution you make, but it should be able to maintain most tanks levels until coral start turning into colonies.

How long does Kalk have to disolve before use in my ato?
Question by: Lisa DiMercurio on Jan 17, 2017 8:58:00 PM
Great question! I typically recommend mixing the Kalk/ATO solution for 5mins, then letting it settle for 30-45mins before turning on my ATO. That does the trick! :-)
Answer by: Randy (Admin) on Jan 19, 2017 11:23:00 AM
My paramters are as follows;
Ph is a constant 7.97 using pinpoint monitor
Calcium 515ppm using Hanna checker
Alkalinity 12.48dkH using Hanna checker
Magnesium 1480ppm using Hanna checker
Up to this point ive been using purple up for calcium supplementation and Aqua Vitro 8.4 for Ph balance.
I would like to start using kalkwasser, would I benefit from using the starter kit or should I just start dosing the Kalk according to directions. Also, is it possible get my Ph up to 8.2-8.4 without effecting anything else? Im sure you can tell im very new to reefing. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Question by: Daniel on Jan 22, 2016 8:34:00 AM
Great question!
The starter kit is great for raising the calcium, alkalinity or magnesium to proper levels before dosing the kalkwasser in the ATO water. In your case since the levels are appropriate you can start with kalk right away without the need of supplements. However eventually the Calcium, Alk and Mag will lower down with time and having the starter kit can help to increase the levels quickly and accurately. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Jan 28, 2016 3:18:00 PM
Hello I have a small AJ reef aquarium, it's about 11.8 gallons. I'm looking to start using kalk and I need cal, and mg so the starter kit seems like a good idea. Can kalk be used with out an ATO? Or using it in a weekly top off manually too much change too fast?
Question by: GRANT on Mar 14, 2016 11:08:00 AM
Great question!
It is ideal with an ATO as it will keep the levels very consistent. However it can be added manually whenever you add your top off water to your unit. You will want to add top off water ideally daily to keep the salinity level consistent. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Mar 15, 2016 3:56:00 PM
I have a 12g nano. If I do a 10% water change every week that's roughly 1 gallon give or take. Using this kit and my RO top off how much will this last me? Are we talking a few years? Also do the chemicals ever go bad?
Question by: Jason on Jun 23, 2014 3:24:00 PM
Hi Jason,
The dry chemical doesn't go bad, nor do any of the mixed solutions except for the kalk itself. Once that has been mixed with water it will last a few weeks to a month as long as you don't keep agitating it (it reacts with air). For a tank that size the calcium, alk, and magnesium supplements will likely last you years (though it depends on consumption). The kalk is what you use for your day to day, and that will largely depend on your evaporation but I suspect your looking at atleast a years supply there as well.
