Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) is used alone or in combination with BRS Bulk Sodium Bicarbonate to maintain proper alkalinity and raise the pH of your tank. Most commonly used in the 2 Part daily dosing system in conjunction with BRS Bulk Calcium Chloride to maintain proper calcium and alkalinity levels on a daily basis. Dissolves crystal clear and meets strict BRS quality standards.
Four Sizes Available:
Replacement Pouch - Makes 1 gallon of solution when mixed
1/2 Gallon - Makes 4 gallons of solution when mixed
1 Gallon - Makes 8 gallons of solution when mixed
5 Gallon - Makes 40 gallons of solution when mixed.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO MIX SODA ASH
- 1 Standard 8 oz. dry measuring cup
- 1 Mixing spoon

- While stirring water, add 2 level dry measuring cups of soda ash.
- Once dissolved, use funnel to transfer solution to gallon jug.
- Label Alkalinity and let sit before use.
NOTE: If you have difficulty dissolving alkalinity solution float the jug in a sink of hot water and shake vigorously. Alternatively, you can mix the solution in a large open top container to allow for stirring the solution.

Ask a question
There is 16 cups in a gallon, so if you follow the recipe of 2 cups per gallon of solution it will make 8 gallons of solution.
The 2 cups is both near the maximums solubility and easy unit of measurement to measure. it it will match the dosage for calcium. If you alter the recipe its no longer going to conform to the calculator and the dosage will no longer match up with the calcium. You don't want to alter the ratio of calcium to alkalinity because corals always consume them in a fixed ratio that is the same ratio the solutions are mixed to (so if you mix them up correctly, you should always be dosing matched amounts of calcium and alkalinity solutions).
At the current recipe you could do as you say, control both on the same timer (because the dosages would be matched), if you alter the recipe or solutions that would no longer be possible.
Just one or the other will do the trick as they both accomplish the same thing. The difference is that sodium bicarbonate will have a very slight pH lowering effect and sodium carbonate will have a small ph raising effect. If your pH is less then 8.4 normally, most folks go with the soda ash (sodium carbonate).
In all likelihood, it sounds like you may have some ammonia remaining in your RODI product output. The Soda Ash itself should have no odor, but if there is any remaining ammonia left over from the chloramines in your tap water, this would not necessarily show up on the TDS meter, but may be present in high enough levels to present a smell. The ammonia would be more noticeable in the soda ash solution due to the very high pH reacting with those molecules.
I have been using sodium carbonate for years and have had good results. Is there any advantage of the one of the three choice I have seen and if so what might they be. I have used pure baking soda. However with one of your great dosing pumps I do have to or I do shake the container often is it necessary to do so . Thanks Ron
The Soda ash (sodium carbonate) Will have a increasing impact on pH in the aquarium. Sodium Bicarbonate will have a slight lowering effect on the tanks pH. This is the main benefit between the two! Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
1 Gallon: 7lbs
5 Gallon: 35lbs
For concentration the solution is completely saturated. Overall the concentration of DKH in the liquid of solution in a 1 gallon jug of 2 part solution will state a DKH around 6100 however this is found by entering 1 gallon as water volume and adding in dry crystals until 2 cups is reached in the full amount. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
You certainly can use our soda ash solution while using ESV calcium. By following the instructions on our reefing calculator to find the proper amount of BRS alkalinity solution you can simply begin dosing BRS alkalinity. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
There is 8 fluid ounces in a standard household measuring cup, so two cups would be equivalent to 16 fluid ounces. This would also be equivalent to about 473mL.
