Filter socks come in mesh or felt and with a plastic ring or draw string. See below for differences and unique advantages.
- Mesh: Thin, doesn't clog as easily as felt
- Felt: Thicker, better at removing particles, but can clog faster
- Plastic Ring: attaches via ring that fits common sump holders
- Draw String: attaches directly to plumbing
- BRS recommends starting with felt socks and switching to mesh if they clog faster than desired.

best filter sock By ARMANDO on 6/7/2017ARMANDO would recommend this product to a friendI bought a few of these socks, construction is solid. Great to have around as mechanical filtration.
love me. Traps a lot of waste.
Just what the Dr. ordered By statru on 5/21/2017statru would recommend this product to a friendThe quality and size are perfect for my Crystal Systems sump. It's not easy finding the longer ones that reach the bottom of the sump. I've used the easily accessible shorter versions and they require more frequent maintenance. I struggle to turn them inside out prior to laundering, but manage to do it. Then I wash them in hot water and 1/2 cup bleach and air dry them. I have several and rotate them so I'm not using the same ones all the time. It helps to get more/longer use out of them. And the price can't be beat! Thanx BRS for the value! <*}}}><
Works Great By Gordon on 4/23/2017Gordon would recommend this product to a friendI have gotten 10 of these and they work great. The stitching stays together through every wash I have given them.
Great quality By Scott on 4/23/2017Scott would recommend this product to a friendThese socks are made of good materials and are put together very well. I will buy more. Just like everything else from BRS they are priced well and are excellent quality. Fast shipping and excellent customer service as usual
Great socks! By statru362 on 4/7/2017statru362 would recommend this product to a friendLove the ease of use and the quality of the fabric used in the sock's composition. The plastic ring around the neck fits perfectly in my Trigger Systems Crystal sump sock holder. I just wish the 4-inch wide ones were easier to turn inside out to better clean them. Once a week I swap them out and they get laundered in my washer in nothing but 1/2 cup of bleach, then I air dry them. They get nice & white again so I can't complain.
Great socks and work very well By Kirti on 3/30/2017Kirti would recommend this product to a friendThese socks are extremely well made compared to some others I have tried. Not only do they do a great job but they last as well. They are easy to clean and come out nice and clean with a dilute solution of bleach and water
My Favorites By Evan on 3/15/2017Evan would recommend this product to a friendI only started appreciating these socks when I switched to a sump that doesn't fit them. I especially like them after my monthly maintenance, when I like to stir up the sand bed and blow detritus out of the rocks. The tank water turns filthy, but overnight, these socks polish the water to sparkling clean. No mesh sock I've ever tried comes close.
I miss you, trusty BRS felt filter socks...

Great sock filters By Lou on 2/7/2017Lou would recommend this product to a friendI bought 2 extra socks for my CPR SOCKIT 4” SOCK-it Filter Sock Holder which I bought here at BRS. These socks feel strong and sturdy and fit so well on my sock holder. I definitely recommend buying these. They are not too difficult to clean either. I just turn them inside out, wash them out with hot water and then throw them in a bucket full of bleach and hot water. Leave it in for a few hours and they are white once again, like new.
Trigger Systems Emerald Sumps By jeffrey on 1/25/2017jeffrey would recommend this product to a friendI ordered a couple of extra felt socks when I purchased the Trigger Systems Emerald 34 Sump. The sump came supplied with 4 X 14 felt socks which to me seem to long. The socks seems very well built and I will have to wait and see what happens over time. I will be getting more of the 4 X 8 Felt socks so that I can be better at cleaning them out regularly.
HEY NICE SOCKS By CJ on 1/17/2017CJ would recommend this product to a friendGreat filter socks.
Ask a question
Good question. All of our filter socks are 200 micron filter socks!
Some folks just throw them in the washing machine when they collect enough dirty ones. Personally I turn them inside out and give them a good rinse and scrub by hand.
This will be the 4x14 models with the plastic rings :-)
Is there any O ring I can use or, can I put a heavy rock in the bottom of the sock to hold them tighter to the opening?
The 4x 8 will work great additionally we have used the 4x14's as well which allow for a little more time before changing.
We are not familiar with the CAD lights sock size. As long as the hole for the filter socks is 4" exactly our filter socks will work great! Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
These filter socks have a lip which makes the inside diameter not very important for measurement. These will fit inside of a 4" diameter hole perfectly however! Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
The BRS filter socks with plastic rings work great in the Trigger sumps. Many of us here at the office use them for just that!
This will not work in the red sea reefer tanks unfortunately. The only socks we are aware of the if the socks directly from Red Sea. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
You can put any type of media you choose into the filter socks, however for a media sock, we would suggest using the mesh socks over the felt, since little particles of media, like getting stuck in the felt socks and become a bit harder to clean over time. The mesh socks handle loose media much better while allowing for more flow through them. The felt socks are best for water polishing.
I've been using the 8" socks with good results - their also very durable and machine wash well.
1) Is using bleach necessary when machine washing?
2) What's the best way to tell when these socks need to be replaced (because of age/wear and no longer effective)?
3) If I wait too long will that contribute to an increase in nitrates?
1) It isn't necessary (many people just use straight water) but bleach does a very good job of breaking down organics.
2)If they have holes worn thru them or if the stitching starts to come apart would be when I would start to worry about them :-)
3)If you leave them in the tank to long it won't be as effective. It is more of an opportunity cost, by leaving the sock in for too long you give a chance for detritus to contribute to the nutrients in the tank, whereas if you had changed it out you would have removed it from the tank before giving it the opportunity. In the end, there won't be any more nitrates then could have existed without it, but you missed your chance to prevent them if you don't change them.
Either of the 4" filter socks will do the trick. I personally prefer to use the 14" even if its a bit long.
The more often you change them the better, that way you can remove the solids before they continue to break down and add additional nutrients to your water column. You want to avoid soaps when cleaning them but its pretty common for people to use unscented household bleach in water. Be sure to rinse them and all them to dry completely.
