Quick Overview

Why does BRS recommend this?

One of the most popular ATO systems available. The JBJ A.T.O system is by far the most cost effective way of utilizing a safe and consistent auto top off system.  With multiple configurations, the JBJ A.T.O will fit almost anyone’s needs.  With linkable brackets adjust and secure float switches, you will need to add your pump of choice, the JBJ ATO system is a great top off unit for reefers on a budget.

  • Audible Alert

  • Adjustable timer based Safety

  • Multiple configurations

  • Visual LED signals

  • Includes float switches and brackets

Note: No pump included.  The pump will need to be able to refill the amount of evaporated water in just a couple of minutes.  BRS suggest purchasing a pump that is just slightly larger and placing a ball valve to control the overall amount of flow.  We suggest looking into the Sicce Syncra Silent line of pumps or the BRS 50 mL top off pump.

JBJ ATO Self-Leveling Controller Features:

Float Sensors

The A.T.O. is equipped with (2) float sensors that activate within seconds when your water level drops and automatically refills your sump or tank until it reaches your desired set point. Each float sensor has been designed with an exterior guard preventing snails & hermit crabs from attaching to the sensors.

Electronic Controller Module

Our state-of-the-art electronic controller allows for (2) modes of operation with a total of (3) different set up scenarios, allowing you more choices for installation for your unique set up. Our compact controller also incorporates a visible L.E.D. panel and an Audible Signal alerts when in operation mode.

Linkable Brackets

The kit includes commercial grade "Linkable Brackets" that can easily be adjusted to meet your height requirements, and securely positions your float sensors. No suction cups to lead to disastrous water spillage.

Pump Safety Protection

The A.T.O. automatically stops power to your return pump in your reservoir, in the event that your reservoir is low on water. This safety feature prevents pumps from running dry and failing. (Mode A- Example 1)

  • Long lasting easy hook up By richard on 10/16/2017

I've had mine 7 years never any issues as long as you do periodic maintenance on the float switches nothing a vinegar bath can't handle :)
  • Is the adjustment worth it? By GoneFishingAgain on 10/10/2017

It is quite reliable if you use the right mode. Many do a traditional top off from spare may find it occasionally fail because people fail to clean the tank (and the float switch). But after all the tedious maintenance why not just buy a reliable timer, or a wifi remote control plug just simply connect to the pump in the spare water tank? Let it run a minute every day. If it may pump too much water in just one minute, add a control valve. Evaporation is constant almost everyday. Sometimes technology is good, but ATO is simply too clumsy to maintain.
  • Very reliable By Bakerrichard27 on 9/1/2017

I've had this unit since 2011 as long as you perform quarterly maintenance on the floats it works flawless and is extremely reliable
  • Not trustworthy = not a good investment By Sawyer on 6/18/2017

I have had this JBJ ATO running on my tank for just around a year now and there are two main problems with it.
First, the float switches get gunked up easily which causes them to stick in position, this makes it where the pump will either continue to run until the ATO auto shut turns it off, or the ATO won't turn on because the switch is stuck up.
This problem leads into the second one, which is the auto shutoff timer should be more flexible. I have turned it to the longest time but even then half the time it only runs for a minute and then will activate the timer. It isn't reliable and here recently there have been several times when, luckily, I have caught my water level dipping very low.
Overall I would suggest forking over the extra money for a system that is more reliable and doesn't have these design flaws.

  • it works By Dave on 3/31/2017

My 1st one came with the used set up I got and it lasted a year for me (I have no idea how old it was)...I figured I get the same one cause I have some spare parts now....it works as it should...ask me again in a year..
  • My last ATO! By brad on 3/3/2017

I've been through several other ATO systems and all have failed. I've been using this product now without a single issue. This kit gives you flexibility in setup to meet specific needs. Very well thought out product.
  • good for the price By triad696 on 3/3/2017

Been using it for 6 weeks and no problems, but , as with ANY automated system, ALWAYS check on it. Automation is not for setting and forgetting, it's to make the little chores less tedious and to make your tank consistent. I use multiple automation systems, when you feed the tank, check the systems.
  • good top unit for the price By Denbf58 on 12/15/2016

just received my second unit for another tank my first one has been working just fine for 3 years now bang for the buck this is a good unit .
  • I should have trusted negative reviews By Steve16046 on 12/9/2016

I bought this because of the BRS video recommendation and being the eternal optimist I elected to ignore the negative reviews here. I was hoping that either they were isolated instances or perhaps the product was since improved. It wouldn't happen to me anyway. Well I had it installed for just 2-3 weeks and it stopped working. I suspect the float switch that tells the unit to deliver more water, and was causing my sump pump to suck air. For me (and my fish and corals) this could have been a serious problem since this tank is in my office and I am not here on the weekends. Had I not noticed it, my main pump would likely have burned out and disaster would have followed. To the credit of BRS, they stood behind the product and got me out a replacement promptly. But I will start looking for another solution, since now I won't trust this product. The float switches seemed to be very cheap and poor quality, which is a shame because they are probably the key to this product performing dependably.
  • Worked Sorta By Jamie on 12/3/2016

Like others have said. Its okay I guess but don't trust it with your tank. It will randomly decide to stop working and then your tank won't fill. If you're always around its not terrible but when you work 80 hours a week like me then you quickly get your tank 10 gallons of water short and with a salinity through the roof.
  • As advertised fits in back of JBJ 6 Gallon By JBJ6Reef on 6/24/2016

I use this in my JBJ 6 gallon reef tank. The float sensor fits in the middle back compartment after I removed the original media.

Product Questions

Are we able to order the system with different voltage 240v - 50 Hz?
Question by: HELMUT DRESSELHAUS on Jan 26, 2016 9:13:00 PM
Great question!
We do not have voltages other than standard North American. Unfortunately our products are intended for use in the US and Canada only. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions.

I have a pressure RO feed directly to my tank and my old float valve ATO is worn out. Can this unit be paired up with a solenoid RO controller? If so, which would you recommend?
Question by: Mike on Jun 4, 2016 10:33:00 AM
Great question!
This will have a single outlet which a pump or possible water solenoid could be attached to. We do not currently have an option for water solenoid however if you find one option with an outlet control this controller can turn it on and off. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

The max on time for the unit will be 14 minutes. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Mar 23, 2016 10:48:00 AM
My unit pumps as soon as power is applied. Like after a power outage. Is there a way to stop this. It pumps for a good 5 seconds until it seems to find itself and the sensors.

Question by: Wade on Mar 1, 2016 7:59:00 PM
Great question!
We are not aware of this feature being able to be turned off. You may want to contact the manufacturer to see if there is any adjustments. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

what's the recommended pump for the ATO JBJ? thanks!
Question by: werner on Oct 29, 2013 6:21:00 AM
Hey Werner,
Really just about anything will work in terms of the ATO itself, its more about how far and fast you need to pump water. The most common pump is the aqualifter pump which pumps slowly and only goes a couple of feet. Otherwise if you need to pump larger distances you could use something like the 50ml top off doser.

Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Oct 29, 2013 6:21:00 AM
Why do i still get drips of water out of my discharge hose non stop even after the vaccum pump has shut off the.
The vacuum pump is on the bracket at the top of the tank at lease 3 ft. higher then my R/O holding tank(no pump in here for the A.T.O.
Question by: jerry on Jan 17, 2014 1:24:00 AM
Hi Jerry,
Is the water in your storage container higher off the floor then the water in your sump? If so that would create a siphon when the pump turns on and water would continue to pass to the tank after it turns off (regardless of where pump itself is located).
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Jan 17, 2014 1:24:00 AM
What kind of pump is recommended for this system thanks
Question by: Dan on Aug 29, 2014 3:28:00 PM
Hi Dan,

Any low flow pump will work with this ATO. I ave personally used our 50ml/min dosing pump but find that it had trouble keeping up with large systems. I moved to the Auqa Gadget HydroFill ATO Pump due to the fact that it can be run dry without any problems, its self priming and it won't back siphon.

Another great option would be a small submersible pump like the eheim 300 or sicce micra and micraplus

Keep in mind these pumps are rated for low head heights so if you are running the ATO hose from the ground to the top of your tank you will need to go a little bigger.

I hope this helps!
Have a great day :)
