Carbon Dioxide (CO2) can directly affect the pH of your aquarium, and with a low pH, corals may not grow as fast. Connecting a CO2 scrubber directly to the venturi on your skimmer along with CO2 absorption media you can control the amount of CO2 that is being sucked into your skimmer, effectively raising the pH of your tank by removal of excess CO2.

Requires CO2 Absorbent Media (not included)

CO2 is by far the number one cause to low pH in household aquariums. Ambient CO2 can vary from building to building and depending on your location it may not be practical to keep your windows open or pull fresh air from outside into the skimmer. By relocating your protein skimmer's air intake from the silencer over to the CO2 scrubber can actually increase your tank's pH by a couple points. Depending on the amount of ambient CO2 in the room it is not uncommon for tanks to raise from 7.8 pH up to 8.3 pH within a couple days but results can vary.

Directions:

Connect the included 3/8" tubing to your protein skimmer's air intake and the output side of the reactor. It is usually easiest to remove your skimmer's silencer and directly attach the CO2 Scrubber tubing your pumps venturi.

Unscrew the body from the head of the reactor and remove the refillable cartridge. Add 1 Tbsp of RODI water to the bottom of the reactor body making sure that it does not touch the CO2 media when the cartridge is replaced. Completely fill the refillable cartridge insert with your preferred CO2 absorbing media and place back into the reactor housing.

Monitor your tank's pH hourly for the first couple days of use. When your pH starts to drop in value (usually 1-2 weeks) you will need to replace the CO2 media. Most CO2 absorbing media will have a color changing indicator to let you visually see when it is depleted.

I want to covert my reactor back over to use with Reverse osmosis unit what size Male end threads into port?
Question by: James Scott on May 11, 2023, 5:34 AM
The BRS reactor ports are 1/2" Female thread. You will want to reduce to 1/4" for RO.

Will I notice a ph different right away or does it gradually grow over a period of time? I installed it and my ph went from 8 to 8.1. Will it go higher then that?
Question by: Eli on Nov 9, 2022, 8:05 AM
Thanks for reaching out to us! The change in pH is going to vary from tank to tank depending on impact of CO2 on pH. The change isn't going to happen same day and may take a couple days for the full results to occur. If you see the pH drop again, it is time to change the media. Please let us know if we can help with anything else!
Answer by: Kyle Thomas (BRS Staff) on Nov 10, 2022, 10:20 AM
How long can you expect a cartridge of media to last before needing replacement? Obviously the size of the skimmer is gonna be a factor but on average for say a Reef Octopus 150 how long would I get out of it?
Question by: Patrick Burke on Oct 13, 2022, 11:22 AM
Thanks for the question! As long as it has moisture, the media will last up to 14 days depending on the level of CO2 passing through it!

What is the capacity of this scrubber in media weight? I noticed the Icecap scrubbers are rated by how much media they hold by weight. Would be helpful to be able to compare.

Hey there,
Thank you for reaching out to us! This will hold 1.2lbs, approximately 800mL, of media.

Please let me know if you need anything further and take care!

Is it possible to hook this up to a hob skimmer?
Question by: Brandon on Nov 12, 2017, 7:02 PM
HI Brandon, great question!
You can hook this unit up to any skimmer but I would be aware of the possibility that the skimmer could back-siphon and cause a spill. If possible i would mount this at or above the height of the skimmer to eliminate the possibility.
I hope this helps!
Answer by: Nick on Nov 25, 2017, 3:45 PM
What are the dimensions of the scrubber unit?
Question by: Orion Krause on Oct 29, 2017, 2:57 PM
Hi,

This canister is about 12" inches tall and about 5" inches at its widest point. :-)
Answer by: Randy on Nov 25, 2017, 9:05 AM
My skimmer is in the back chamber of my AIO tank. Can I mount this under the tank with a longer hose, or will this effect my skimmer's effectiveness?
Question by: Lola Knudsen on May 25, 2017, 12:36 PM
The CO2 Scrubber can be mounted under your tank, however there are some skimmers that can push water backwards through the air intake line when power is removed from the pump. Just as long as your pump doesn’t do that, you should be able to mount the reactor wherever you wish.
Have a great weekend!

If you need a different size barb for your skimmer hose, we do sell various adapters located on this page https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/ozone-resistant-kynar-elbow-male-npt-x-barb.html which should fit your needs.

Have a great day!

Answer by: Randy on Jan 11, 2017, 3:58 PM
When ordering this product does the internal cartridge can be replace for a clear cartridge or not? A clear cartridge can affect the performance of the absorbing media?
Question by: Sergio on Jan 8, 2017, 11:48 AM
Great question! Either refillable cartridge would work fine with the CO2 Scrubbing Media, without concern to the media's performance. We utilize both cartridges on a few tanks here at BRS with equal results. :-)
