Quick Overview

Why does BRS recommend this?

We have used the Synergy Reef Overflow on a few different tanks and every time we do we are remembered why we picked it for that project.  With only taking up the minimal amount of space needed in the tank, leaving more room for uninterrupted rock work and coral placement.  They use a tried and true Bean Animal plumbing system which allows for fluctuating flow rates through the return without having to have constant adjustment of the main drain flow rate.

The Synergy Reef Overflow

Product Questions

What size pipe should I buy for the drains
Question by: shaun martin on Jun 14, 2016 3:31:00 PM
Great question!
This will have three 1" slip bulkheads to work with 1" PVC pipe. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions.
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Jun 15, 2016 11:06:00 AM
Does this come with a drill bit?
Question by: Betty on Jan 13, 2016 5:24:00 PM
This does not come with a drill bit. You will need a 60 mm Glass drill bit for installation. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Jan 13, 2016 6:44:00 PM
What is the diameter of the holes that must be drilled on the back of the aquarium? Also, what is the recommended distance from the top of the aquarium? Thanks, C
Question by: Coy Dixon on Jan 14, 2016 8:46:00 AM
Great question,
The holes in the tank will need to be 60mm, (we recommend the 60 mm glass drill bit)
This should be mounted around 1/2" or so below the top of the aquarium on a rimless tank. On a rimmed aquarium you can bring the top of the wet side nearly to the top. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Jan 14, 2016 3:13:00 PM
Does this include the bulkheads to afix it to the tank? Also what size pipe is this meant to be used with?
Question by: Nichols on Oct 4, 2015 5:02:00 PM
Great question!
This will come with the necessary 2 bulkheads to connect to the tank and the 3 drain bulkheads. The 3 drain bulkheads are 1" ABS bulkheads. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Oct 5, 2015 3:03:00 PM
Are the bulkheads physically attached to inside overflow box? Because with my eurobracing there would be zero way to hold them still while I tighten the nut from the other side

Also is there a model that can work on 3/4" acrylic?
Question by: mike on Apr 12, 2016 10:25:00 PM
Great question!
There are bulks heads however they are not attached and will need to be held on with the bulkhead nut. For mounting you will want one person to hold the inside and another mounting the outside box. The currently model available will only work up to 5/8". You may want to contact Synergy Reef directly to see if they have alternatives available!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Apr 13, 2016 3:13:00 PM
If this is going on a non-rimless tank will the water level have to be below the top trim? Just isn't pleasing to the eye at that point. My counter would be to build a canopy that hangs over low enough to hide that but I'd rather not have to do that.
Question by: Danny on Jan 14, 2016 10:55:00 PM
Great question!
Just having installed this on a rimmed aquarium myself the water level when the top of the weir is placed just under the rim which no spare room is perfect to have the trim hide the water line! Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Is this the overflow used on the BRS 160?
Question by: Alan on Nov 26, 2016 9:30:00 AM
Great question! The BRS 160 has a 20" version of this overflow. :-)
Answer by: Randy (Admin) on Nov 26, 2016 9:32:00 AM
Would this box be suitable for a nano tank, say 22 gallons?
Question by: Andrew on Feb 2, 2016 5:39:00 PM
Great question!
If the tank is larger enough to hold the overflow there is not reason it could not work. Overall it would be a little large. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Feb 24, 2016 4:50:00 PM
Can you use Schedule 80 bulkheads on this to connect both to both the aquarium and plumbing?
Question by: David Price on May 17, 2016 10:22:00 AM
Great question!
Schedule 80 bulkheads will be a different size and not work without you drilling larger holes. We do not recommend this as it will void any warranty and replacement.
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on May 18, 2016 2:19:00 PM
What is the flow rate? GPH?
Question by: horacio adame on Jan 24, 2016 12:02:00 AM
Great question!
There is a 1500 GPH Max Flow Rating. The overflow does not have a minimum as it will vary on the return pump pushing water back into the tank. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Feb 3, 2016 11:20:00 AM
Does BRS carry the replacement weir for this? The weir on my 16" box started to warp bowing it horizontally. It doesn't affect functionality but the bowing is noticeable under lights.
Question by: Gian on Jul 10, 2016 11:29:00 PM
Thanks for the question, and we currently do not carry replacement weirs for the Synergy Overflow. You can most likely obtain them directly from Synergy Reef Systems if you contact them at,
Answer by: Charlie (Admin) on Jul 11, 2016 10:54:00 AM
What size tank is this for? Will it work for a 125 gallon tank?
Question by: tammy on Jan 24, 2016 7:30:00 AM
Great question!
Realistically with the 1500 GPH rating this can work up to 150 gallon tank with 1500 GPH return pump, It will depend on the GPH rating of the pump. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Designing the overflow –

Being reef hobbyist’s ourselves, we spent years working on the design of this overflow. We tested hundreds of variations and options before we came to this design. Our fundamental goal was to create the smallest and quietest internal overflow box possible, while maintaining the flow rates desired by the reef hobbyist. We wanted a overflow system that everyone would want to use. Originally co-designed with Reef Savvy and released as their “Ghost Overflow”, we have now changed it to the “Synergy Reef Overflow”. Not only did we do the design this overflow in house, but we have done extensive testing over the past 2 years as well!

Manufacturing the overflow –
We manufacture and assemble this overflow ourselves! 100% built and supported by Synergy Reef Systems in the USA! We control the availability of our own product and are not dependent on someone else. Only the highest quality acrylic is used in our overflow. We do not use lesser quality PVC or other plastics.
We use our state of the art precision Spindle CNC to machine all of the interlocking pieces. This allows us to create a high quality durable piece of equipment.
Precision laser cut the teeth in the removable weir for a smooth polished finish found no where else. This inhibits algae growth inside the teeth. We will not stand for rough routered teeth on the weir.
The smooth routered edges of our internal overflow box not only look clean, but will stay clean. We do not leave any overhanging material that will build up with coraline algae and other marine organisms. The smooth surface of the internal box allows for simple scraping and cleaning.
Bulkheads are installed inside the front box to provide a smooth surface for the incoming water to flow over. Reduces turbulence inside the overflow. These bulkheads are the highest quality, Made in the USA, that will not deteriorate or need replacement.
Bulkheads in the rear box are easily replaceable if you ever need to. Plumbing accidents happen and having the ability to remove the bulkheads and replace them is not going to require you to purchase a whole new overflow. These are easily found at any local aquarium store in an emergency.Every overflow is carefully inspected before it leaves our facility.

  • Great product By Tunaman on 10/2/2016

Product is great on my 60 cube. Easy install easy setup. However quality control must have been on vacation. Top lid has sharp edges and does not line up exactly where it suppose to. Still has paper backing stuck between seams too. Overall though good product. Works as intended.
  • Excellent By Christopher on 9/4/2016

New to reefing and started off with all hob equipment. After watching the brs 160 and reading a lot I decided I would be better off building a sump and taking my tank apart and drilling holes for this overflow. So glad I did. My tank is amazing now, especially compared to what it used to be. Appearance is amazing. This overflow is super sharp looking. And it is dead silent. Super easy to plumb the bean animal with this. Must have.
  • Great product. Super easy install. By Hunter on 8/27/2016

I'd recommend this product to anyone looking to add an overflow and sump to their tank. I had one that leaked a small amount, but the guys at BRS shipped me a new one overnight and included return shipping of the defective unit. New one installed and zero problems. Super easy set up and perfect low profile in-tank box. Be sure to test fit everything prior to drilling or the removable weir teeth will be hard to put on and take off. Easily handles as much flow as I want to run through the box with no problem. The 1 inch plumbing also has no problems keeping up with the large amount of flow I run. Great product. You won't be disappointed.
  • Early Review is Good By BigH on 8/21/2016

It's a sleek looking overflow. With the back of my tank painted black, it's hardly visible. My tank isn't up and running yet. A water test was successful. Drilling was easy. A minor complaint is cross support bars in the box on the back of the tank. The two bars are directly over top of the middle drain bulkhead. It limits how high the fittings can be. Again, a minor issue that caused me to slightly adjust my bean animal setup.
  • The Best! By Spencer on 8/15/2016

Great product and very quiet. Cutting the holes in the glass was very easy.
  • Close to perfect, but not quite. By Elliott on 7/10/2016

Extremely well packaged by Synergy, comes in it's own box from them before being packed and shipped by BRS. I'm satisfied with the product, but one corner of the external box has 30+ small bubbles across a 1" area which caused some concern. BRS directed me back to Synergy and they assured me it's not structural and was 'sealed' to compensate for the bubbles, which I can see over the area. I'm sure it won't be an issue, but I wish it didn't have a corner full of bubbles that needed extra sealing. A little disappointing, structural or not.
  • one of the best By Francisco on 4/7/2016

hands down one of the best investments I've made any one can put it on template makes everything that much easer
  • Great box By Reef addict on 2/28/2016

I got this box and I highly recommend this as a overflow for your return pump!
  • Excellent, but with issues By Sean on 2/21/2016

Product is great, but my internal overflow box leaked as have other reviewers. No finishing has been done on any seams, no flame polished edges, over applied solvent in some places, etc. Sort of a rough looking product considering the claims of "no overlapping or rough edges." after fixing the leak I'm happy with the product but seriously it's like they welded it up and sent it on its way rather than doing even the most minor of finishing work. Compared to everything I've seen from CPR and eshoppes the manufacturer seems like they used their high quality cnc and materials as a replacement for good craftsmanship. Sort of a shame since this product is so highly praised
  • Synergy has great customer service! By Tangelo on 2/5/2016

I didn't get around to installing until after my warranty had ran out. I noticed that the outside box was cracked during shipment. Gave them a call and they took care of me and even sent me some Synergy Reef swag. Awesome!
  • Internal box leaks - read on By Dave on 2/1/2016

I recently got around to drilling and installing this over flow box. I then filled up my tank for a leak test leaving the waterline short of the "overflow".  10 minutes later I have water pouring out of the back 3 bulkheads.

After further investigation the bottom of the overflow box inside of the tank is leaking water, and it was causing water to go through the bulkheads, into the back box and then down.

Normally I wouldn't be concerned as this is in the tank, however if I ever had a power outage my tank would drain roughly 6 inches of water.

I drained the water IN my tank and then took the box off to determine if it was coming through the bulkhead holes or not, but after testing in the sink it is very apparently where the water is coming from.

I am in the process of getting this replaced... I've heard mixed review on BRS customer service (this is my first time returning anything, however my customer service for purchases has been top notch).

I will update as soon as I have resolution.
  • Achieve BeanAnimal Nirvana! By Stephen on 1/28/2016

I've achieved Bean Animal Nirvana with this overflow.
My only regret is that I didn’t buy one for my other tank!
Don’t forget to purchase gate valves & unions.
Planning to purchase another when it come available.
