How to set up a saltwater aquarium

Bulkreefsupply.com how to start a saltwater aquarium guide.

Starting a saltwater aquarium can be intimidating, as it is hard to know which advice to follow with so many methods to choose from when deciding how to set up a saltwater tank.  At BRS we stress that there are many roads to a successful saltwater fish tank set up, each with its own advantages; but in the end you can be successful with a vast majority of these methods.  We are going to show how to set up a saltwater fish tank that is very simple, ultimately progressing into a relatively advanced complete reef tank, showing exactly how easy it can be.

Episode 1: Reef tanks made fun and easy.

Episode 2: Protein Skimmers, test kits, carbon and acclimation.

In this first episode we focus on how to start a saltwater tank the fun and easy way by starting with a small marine tank with fish only. Starting a saltwater tank this way is comparatively cheap and a great way to get a handle on the hobby for beginners, and fun even for those experienced in setting up saltwater aquariums.

In this episode, we discuss why we test for ammonia and nitrate, using Elos and Red Sea test kits to do so. We also discuss the importance of using a protein skimmer to remove fish food and waste before it has a chance to turn into nitrate. We also demonstrate the use of activated aquarium carbon to keep the tank free of toxins and color pigments; as well as one method of how to safely acclimate fish.

Episode 3: GFO Reactor, Refugium, Auto Top Off, Phosphate.

Episode 4: Acclimating Corals, Calcium, Alkalinity, Redundancy

In this episode, we discuss why we test for ammonia and nitrate, using Elos and Red Sea test kits to do so.  We also discuss the importance of using a protein skimmer to remove fish food and waste before it has a chance to turn into nitrate.  We also demonstrate the use of activated aquarium carbon to keep the tank free of toxins and color pigments; as well as one method of how to safely acclimate fish.

In this episode, we add some corals and quickly demonstrate acclimation and coral dips.  We also cover calcium and alkalinity briefly, as well as the importance of equipment redundancyWe explore one of the many failsafes available by adding a pH controller to back up our kalkwasser-based auto top of system

Episode 5: Setting up a Reefkeeper Plus Aquarium Controller

Episode 6:Adding a Sump and overflows to our Reef Tank.

In this episode we are going to add a aquarium controller to automate our system and add redundant safety features. We will also demonstrate how much a system like this can save you.

In this episode we are going to add a sump and overflow to the tank using the ultra silent overflow method. We will also add a in sump protein skimmer and upgrade our auto top off system

Episode 7: Aquarium Wavemakers and Controllable Powerheads

Episode 8: Custom Auto Top Off Box and Screen Mesh Top

In Today's episode we are going to discuss aquarium wavemakers including Tunze, Hydor Koralia and EcoTech Marine Vortech pumps. We will install the Voretcs including the battery back up system. These low profile aquarium pumps are really slick and I love the redundancy the battery backup adds to our system.

In Today's episode we are going to make a custom acrylic box for our aquarium auto top off as well as make a DIY clear screen top for the aquarium. Saltwater aquariums don't do well with glass tops in most cases because the glass gets full of salt creep and they have a tendency to overheat so the screen top is not only a fun project but the results are really worthwhile

Episode 9: Upgrading To Aquarium LED Lighting

Episode 10: Two Part Calcium and Alklinity Dosing

In today's episode we are going to upgrade our t5 lighting system to new LED lighting system. We chose the Ecotech Marine Radion based on it's flexibility, features and attractive style. In the demo we will show all of this as well as how to build a unique bracket for the system.

In our tenth and final episode of this series we are going to set up a two part dosing system. The kalkwsasser auto top off system we set up previously just wasn't keeping up with the demand in this tank so it is time to upgrade the system. We will add dosing pumps as well as cover some of the benefits of two part dosing.
