Product Questions

How will this fit in the 3rd chamber of the Aqueon model 2 sump. I have a magdrive refutn pump in there.
Question by: Anhony Celano on Apr 29, 2016 11:39:00 PM
Great question! It is possible that you may or may not have enough room for the SN143, in order to determine weather or not the SN143 will fit in your 3rd chamber you will want to measure how much space you have, and compare that measurement vs. the Footprint of the SN143: 7 9/16" x 7 7/8"

Skimz SN143 Monzter Mini Protein Skimmer

The SN series of protein skimmers are ideal for tanks that do not have a lot of space in the sump available. The footprint is under 7 3/4" x 8" which makes it very easy to fit in almost all locations and sump types.

Updated VSC2.1 DC Controllable Pump

All Skims SN143 skimmers now come with the updated VSC2.1 controllable DC powered pump. With multiple power modes, you now have full control over the amount of water and air that are flowing into your skimmer. The updated pump has had the electronic control devices integrated into the controller instead of the motor block like most other DC pumps. That now eliminated the chance of heat or water coming into contact with the sensitive parts of the pump, leading to a much longer life.

  • U get what U pay for By Noris on 4/3/2017

Bought on sale and worked great for 14 months, then pump died. Warranty is only 12 months long. Pump issues seems to be the norm from what other reviewers are saying. Replacement pump should cost less, perhaps I would have kept it. Your call
  • DO NOT BUY - feel cheated By adam on 3/30/2017

this pump will break on you. mine is broken and brs does not want to extend the warrantee on this despite there being a known issue. i dont think its right for me to now spend half the money its worth to get it working again. and its the last time i ever listen to the suggestions of brs. they have a whole youtube video about how they are backing skimz and how its a quality product that they would only suggest something to you that they would use them selfs. thats bs in this situation clearly.
  • Poorly performing pump By Kyle on 2/27/2017

The pump worked well for about a year, but then it started randomly shutting off. I would clean out the entire skimmer and pump to get it started again. Now, the pump completely died and does not turn back on after cleanings and inspection of the impeller. I bought a new impeller, hoping that would fix the issue, but it is internal. The pumps are not made for longevity. I would recommend going with another brand skimmer or one that does not use DC pumps.
  • DO NOT BUY By Michael on 2/27/2017

This is a defective product. I have been through 4 pumps (including the new "fixed" one) in 18 months. Do not waste your money.
  • Compact By Greg on 2/11/2017

So far the unit works well and is the most compact one of this size that I could find. It has also been very quiet. I will echo others in that the cup is very tough to remove. I have to be careful not to put the cup in too far. We'll see.
  • Worked well while it lasted By Kevin on 1/24/2017

The skimmer worked well while it lasted however the pump only lasted 15 months even with regular cleanings. I would not recommend the skimz brand.
  • Pump fails and fails and fails By Christopher on 12/22/2016

the skimmer was great but that opinion lasted only 7 months, this is when the originally pump died. BRS quickly sent me a replacement which died within 4 weeks. Now I'm waiting for a replacement pump.
  • Good skimmer but collection cup is hard to get off! By Joesalt on 10/27/2016

I had my skimmer for 5 months and after finding the right adjustments it does a good job! I had a tough time getting the collection cup off like everyone else that has this model! Almost sprained my hand, I have a fix now! I use fish oil around on the o-ring and the cup comes off with ease! Give it a try and you'll be happy you did!
  • Pump fails and you can count on that! By William on 9/16/2016

I originally left a review on this product stating the skimmer was great but that opinion lasted only 7 months, this is when the originally pump died. BRS quickly sent me a replacement pump which died within 2 weeks. BRS offered to refund, replace entire skimmer for another brand but I wanted to give Skimz one last chance, because t what are the odds of 3 pumps failing....? I guess pretty damn good because after 5 weeks with the 2nd replacement pump (3rd overall) was dead. BRS refunded the entire skimmer, so I purchased a Reef Octopus. I asked BRS if they wanted the skimmer and pumps back and they said it isn't worth the shipping costs....
  • low quality pump & worst collection cup By Nadibullah on 7/11/2016

I can't get the collection cup off no matter what i try and how hard i try the only way is to clean it you have to take the whole skimmer out of the sump and the pump gave up on me after 3 months of use do not buy it
  • Cup too tight, DC pump not up to par By Bill on 7/8/2016

While this unit does make good skim, I broke the plastic rod on the gate valve trying to remove the cup. I went with a unit with a DC pump in attempt to minamise heat in my tank to reduce cooling draw , however pump is poor design it is noisy had to replace armature once and frankly to produce skim the gate needs to be closed down 3/4 of the way with speed at max. I would have expected a better product from Skimz.
  • I want to recant...don't buy this unit. By DavidJP on 6/10/2016

Originally I wrote that this product was good for the price. I could not amend my original review so I am writing this one. I would recommend you do not buy this unit. Here's why: After having used it for just a few more months I am now completely fed up with the unit. The collector is hard to get on and off. Usually I end up with skimmate on my shirt, in the sump, or worse trying to get it off the unit. Its not that easy to put back on either. One time I accidentally broke the output valve adjuster trying to get the collector off. It should not be this hard. Despite all that, the worst part is the DC pump seemed to have failed after about 4 months of operation. In all fairness, I haven't attempted to take it apart to find out the cause of the motor issue because to do so I have to take the skimmer itself apart, and over-all I am just disappointed by the unit. It didn't seem to do any better than the less fancy skimmer I had before it when it was working. I wish I could suggest a better alternative, but I have not found one yet in that price range.
