Product Questions

How tall is the skimmer cup section once it is removed from the body?
Question by: jonathan on Jul 30, 2015 12:38:00 AM
Great question! The skimmer collection cup is 7 5/8" tall. When the full skimmer is mounted you would need 25" clearance from top to bottom in order to comfortably remove the collection cup. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

  • Super Quiet By Roger on 2/22/2017

So far so good. Its been running for several weeks now, skimming some nasty stuff from the day one. The unit is virtually silent.
  • Pump failed after two weeks of oporation. By Jeromi on 2/22/2017

The Skimmer came well packaged and feels of robust quality. The skimmer was pumping skum the same day of initial set up. After 2 weeks of running I hit the feed mode. The skimmer never came back on and the controller was flashing lights. BRS was great about recognizing the issue and offered pump replacement or refund. Im really disappointed to have a recommended product to fail.
  • Good footprint, powerfull, long breakin By Stuart on 2/19/2017

I replaced a 8 year old mini 160 bubbleking after it no longer seemed to be operating as it had. The Skimz 223 is overpowered for my 120 but gave it a go. After 6 weeks it is performing great. It did take a solid month to get it dialed in. As it broke in I was able to make fine adjustments tomthe airflow to best match my skimming needs. I have it dialed wetter than the old Bubbleking, set to fill the collection cup in about seven days. I could never get the bubbleking to get a consistant wet skimmate. It was good for dry but wet would overflow at times. Now the Skimz is set with the gate valve completely closed and the pump on the third setting. It is louder than the Bubbleking but not by much at this setting. Increasing the power does increase the noise. I will be intersted to see how long the pump lasts after getting 8 years out of the red dragon pump. Overall, I am very pleased with the noise level and the ability to make fine adjustments to suit my needs. Just give it plenty of time to fully break in.
  • Beast mode By Michael on 2/18/2017

Plug it in, take collection cup off. After break in mode , fine tune this beast & I say now running after months of running. Worth every penny, Beast Mode !!!
  • Great Skimmer By Jim on 11/22/2016

This skimmer has been running in my system for a couple months now. It started to pull dark skimmate within the first 24 hours and was super easy to dial in. I've read that some have had issues with microbubbles, but mine puts out very few and all get caught by the sponge before the return pump, so no micro bubbles ever hit the tank! The shape of this skimmer works really well in the sump and the amount of skimmate and ease of dialing it in make it the best skimmer I have ever owned. You can't go wrong with this beast of a skimmer!
  • Great Skimmer-Must Have By Chad on 7/7/2016

So I have to say after going though at least 3 skimmers in my reefing career I think I finally found one that I can't say a single bad thing about! This skimmer is incredible!

The packaging was great, completely protected and boxed intelligently. The setup took about 2 minutes. The most confusing part was just guiding the power cord from the pump, but after I slowed down and read the instructions I finally figured it out.

The build quality is great and overall it's just amazing to look at. I will admit that it was a little bit bigger than I expected. In fact I was a little worried that it might not fit under my Marineland 120 gallon stand, but it slid in like a glove. The oval design is something that should have been thought of a long time ago and makes total sense once you put it in your sump.

So far it's been running for about 3 hours and yes it's dead silent as many others have mentioned. I also feel like this has a very easy and precise way to control output.

The gate valve to monitor effluent is well thought out and dials easily. I am running it on the lowest setting on the pump motor and it is putting out an amazing skimmate. The kind that you go to your LFS and see the great systems they have and wonder "why doesn't my skimmer do that?" I can tell you that this one will give that kind of performance.

If you are in the market for skimmer and looking at the 3 or 4 Benjamin price range I would strongly suggest saving and waiting until you can afford something like this. You will save money in the long run.

Great Job on selling the one BRS. Also, thank you for taking over the service aspect of repair etc if something were to go wrong.

    Awesome skimmer!
  • Worth every penny! By Steve on 6/19/2016

Save yourself a little frustration with this beast and leave the motor speed at the bottom. Close the air valve then crack it open no more than a half turn. Set water outlet gate valve at about half then walk away for a day or even two. Then come back and start ramping up the motor speed. Adjust the water outlet as needed. It will allow some, even a lot of micro-bubbles to escape but it'll slow down drastically. (Mine never did go away completely but then my effluent falls through a sponge before hitting the sump pump. No problem at all.) When you're done with all that, then you might tweak the air but do it very slowly and not by much. To much air means big burps and causes the skim to crash. But hey, it's more than worth the effort! Like I said, this bad boy is a beast! I love it! Once you get it there it's trouble free. I like mine wet and it gives me a real nice steady slow drip drip drip. I'm WAY over rated with this thing on my 110+50 gallon system. (Plan to upgrade to 300 soon) but wow. I can't say enough about how it performs! My old skimmer was shameful compared to the Oval. You won't go wrong with this skimmzer!
  • Great Skimmer - Super powerful, beautiful fit/finish By Kyle on 12/30/2015

This thing is SUPER powerful - following the instructions and trying to get it to break in was interesting as it was producing SOOO many bubbles - I had to ease back on the air intake and lower the RPMs of the pump to one click above the minimum to avoid overflowing into the cup like crazy! I grant this is when the water is super cloudy etc. This pump is ridiculously quiet. I have a Reeflo external pump that is not particularly quiet, but it's on silicone and the silent pads; I didn't even know the skimmer was turned on except that the bubbles were being made. Very nice collection cup size for the size of the skimmer, fit and finish are fantastic; beveled and rounded edges over most places where you might touch it, great attention to detail. DC controllability is great. IF I had a wishlist - I would love Skimz/Neptune to produce some kind of integration with Apex/Neptune controllers as it has a DC Pump, why couldn't it use the variable controls for feed sessions/etc. I think it'd be a super powerful addition. Just my 2 Cents - really excited to watch this thing do work! :)
  • Excellent skimmer By Dave on 6/3/2015

Excellent foot print for space saving requirements. I will agree the unit is very very quiet and the pump does seem to be oversized for this unit. Build quality is above average and I like the design. I would recommend this skimmer.
  • This MONSTER rocks!! By jon on 4/27/2015

upgraded from a 150SSS and this thing is night a day difference, finally got it dialed in after a few days now i just empty the cup once a week. the pump is way over powered so its nice to dial it back. adjustment is easy and i like the gate valve over the pipe version for adjustment.
  • High performance for less money. By Aaron on 4/18/2015

Great Skimmer! I own an aquarium maintenance company and service many tanks with every different type of skimmer. you can think of. This one ranks right up there with the best for its ability to produce skimate. The fact that this skimmer takes up less space in the sump is a huge plus. It's has low power consumption and the pump speed is controllable. Because of the more economical price point compared to other high performance skimmers, the Skimz Oval series is my new "go to". I love it!
  • So far so good By Micah on 3/15/2015

After initially plugging it in, I can tell by the froth it will preform well with a low footprint!
