Just what I needed! By Jason on 11/22/2015

For about $30 more, you can purchase a JBJ ATO system if you won't want to go with a "do-it-yourself" option. I, however, wanted to customize the system to my needs. Here are some points to consider:
1: can be setup several different ways, with a single switch, two switches, or three. This allows both an initial cutoff, a secondary cutoff in case the first float switch gets stuck in the 'on' position, as well as a switch that can flip if your reservoir is empty. The JBJ only allows two switches--this can run all three.
2: I was able to splice additional wire lengths to customize the reach and fit. In general, I don't want the system right against the sump--I want the sensors to have a long reach into the tank and locate my system elsewhere. I can use a longer power cord as well. The mouldable mounting bracket allows you to setup specifically to your sumps needs.
3: there is a 'click' when turning on and off, which several reviewers have mentioned. However, when in the project box (the case for the system), it is barely audible. This is, however, useful when testing your project to ensure it is triggering on and off properly.
4: why not just splice a float switch onto your topoff pump power supply and be done with it? Because a) you will have a 120V line running through your tank that is not rated to handle it, and b) the float switches are not build to handle that current (or even close).
5: by combining an RODI reservoir (in my case, a 5-gallon RODI bucket) with a float valve and auto-shutoff, as well as a pump of your choice (in my case, an aqualifter pump), I have never had to run extra buckets, turn my RODI off, or top my tank off again. Even when we're away for days, the water level stays perfectly even.
6: I combined everything in (5) into a 12-gallon tupperware bin next to my tank. RODI in and water out are run through 1/4 ID rubber grommets. Pump and ATO are on a drainable shelf and all hooked to a surge protector that will trip if wet. It's well packed, clean, and runs well!

I've been running this ATO for about 6 months now. Haven't had any issues. The instructions are detailed and easy to follow. The one thing I would say you need to be aware of is the relay makes a loud clicking noise when it engages. Mine can be heard from several rooms away.

Was a little hesitant about building my own ATO (actually considered selling the kit and buying a pre-made unit) but by the time I put it together I had read through the instructions so many times I had them memorized. Turned out to be a piece of cake.
Only issue I fretted over was the height of the mold-a-holder as I wasn't sure where the water level would be on the float switch (just fyi: it's just about even with the bottom of the snail guard lid) but I left the extra material on, test fitted and re-heated and got it squared away.
Definitely would buy this again if the need ever arises.

Help for Greg on loud buzzing By Aquahub.com on 10/27/2014
Aquahub.com would recommend this product to a friend
The buzzing is probably caused by having a pump or other source of magnetic interference too close to the float switch. As the pump rotates, the magnet inside creates rapid waves of magnetic force which cause the reed switch to flutter and the relay to go on and off very rapidly which creates the annoying buzzing sound. Move the pump as far away from the float switch as possible, this should solve the problem. If the buzzing has already caused the relay to fail, write us at Aquahub and we will send you a new relay. Thanks
Overall good auto top off, but very loud and annoying! By Greg on 10/5/2014

For the money the auto top off has worked good. but the unit is pretty loud as it turns on and off repeatedly.
My tank is in our living room and its REALLY hard to ignore the continuous buzzing sound it makes every time the float switch makes the unit kick on. I wish there was a fix because at times it can be kicking on every few seconds

I put this kit together just a few days shy of going on vacation (yes, the ultimate test) and paired it up with a two gallon bucket of RODI and a tiny fountain pump. I am super happy at the results. My sump has yet to sway from the top off point and just like putting a model car together it was fun and gave you the options to really build your own design. Great and affordable kit.
Works Great and Cost Effective! By Shaun on 7/9/2014

When I decided to finally add ATO to my sump (which I should have done a while ago looking back), I was looking for a simple and cost effective solution as I needed to keep to my budget for this upgrade. After considering all the options, and the price tags, this was the clear winner! Paired with a TOM Aqua Lifter pump, this has been a flawless solution. Easy to build using the provided instructions, I had it built and in operation within an hour. Molding the float mount took the longest but was simple though tedious. The components provided in the box seem of quality, but will be easily and economically replaceable if they become defective. This would not be possible with more commercial ATOs in most cases and I prefer self repair. Would definitely buy again if I had a need for a second one.

If you are electrically inclined there good and work well, The 12 volt part has to be carefully connected and crimped with a proper crimper for sound operation and connection to the relay. Other reviews I've read said they quit working and I think they have not made sound connections which on low voltage is very important, my background is in HVAC and controls so I know this is a very important point to make.

I thought I would try this DIY auto top off kit. I have had other name brand ato's and not been very happy with them. So if your electrically inclined it's a snap to make up. I like the 2 float system for extra shut down safety redundancy. It works great so I'll get another for my frag system. All the parts are good quality as well.
Best value for the money By paul on 11/5/2013

The kit took a little less than an hour to assemble. (The biggest tasts were drilling holes into the little bottle to keep the float switch free of snails/junk.
The electronics were easy to screw and snap together. The relay also has a little diode (to tell you it's on, in case you don't hear the loud click) -- and I drilled another hole into the black hobby box and put clear silacone over it to make a window.
But for $40 bucks, I've now bought 4 of these for my tanks. The float switch works fairly precisely. I rigged it to a cord with multiple outlets, so the top off tank gets a quick dose of calk from a sealed bottle when it turns on the top off pump. brilliant

For the price of this product you cannot beat it. the instructions were very helpful and everything went together with ease. You do have to buy an extension cord for the kit. But for the price of the kit you can't complain. some of the reviews complain about a clicking noise from the relay, if you have it mounted in the box you can barely hear it. I have my unit mounted on the outside of my stand and asked my wife if she could hear it and it was a No.
great product will buy more for my other aquariums.

I bought two of these units last week. They have been working flawlessly. Sorry I didn't put them on sooner!
I'd say there was only one thing that wasn't much fun. That was the cutting and bending of the plastic bracket that holds the floats. I wished they would redesign it with some sort of universal sliding bracket for the floats to mount to. I'm closely monitoring my water levels in my refugiums and making sure these ATO's are working correctly. If I find a glitch or a hiccup, I'll be reposting what happened. So far, so good though!

I used this for a while with an aqualifter pump. It is a good entry value for ATO but mine would not kick on anymore after 8 months of use. I changed the relay, but that did not solve the issue. It must lay somewhere in the float switches.

I ran one of these kits on my 29 gallon for just over a year with no issues. I just installed one on my 120 gallon this last week. Super easy build and install. All you need is a cheap extension cord to wire into the relay so your pump can turn on and off. The float switches have been reliable and there is an emergency switch in place in case one does fail. While the moldable float switch holder does work for most people (I used in on my 29 gallon setup), I opted to build my own holder out of acrylic for the new build. Overall I would recommend this as a good affordable ATO solution.

If your budget is low, this is a good kit to have. The valves holder is flimsy but it works. The 12v power supply and relay can be replaced easily and available on their website, keep a spare one. I have one system for water top off and another system for kalkwasser in the same sump for a few years, replaced a relay once.

after putting this thing together it worked pretty good for a week or 2. then it kept over filling, the bottom float was bad. company sent me out 2 new floats. had it for a little over 2 months now and today i noticed its not kicking on anymore regardless of what the floats are doing. wired on new floats and still not kicking on which means now the danged relay is busted. its been enough of a headache that i really wish i had just spent an extra 20 bucks. it is an eyesore for sure with wires going all over the friggin place. some seem to work great per reviews, and others seem to be crap. i have contacted customer service again but may end up at radio shack for a new relay.

Do yourself a huge favor an don't waste your money on this, pay the extra money an get a built one. Bracket is cheap that you have to mold yourself. An when it is all said an done you don't have near enough wire to run it. If you don't mind a bulky eyesore this is the one for you.

My only complaint is the relay I put the system together like the instructions said, and the next day herd the relay buzz for a few seconds off and on for 5 minutes every now and then. So I ended up removing the relay and replacing it with a fuze holder and fuze (5-8 amp just to save the switches). Now the switches flip and the pump kicks on with no noise just smooth operation. I use the Aqua Lifter Vacuum Pump it is very quite i would recommend this pump for the system...

this product was real easy to install and assemble. float switches work like a charm. if there was a con to the product at all it would be that the relay switch makes a clicking sound every time the float switch activates it. this is not really noticeable if placed under the tank near the sump or behind cabinets. over all i am happy with the price and ease of this product

Just set this up and it's been running about a week. This is a great little ATO for the price. It was very easy to follow the included instructions (lots of photos). The relay is pretty loud and the sensor is pretty sensitive. My pump normally kicks on and off repeatedly for about 2 minutes and then I don't hear it again for a couple of hours. My only concern with it is that it does take up two plugs instead of just one. But for the extra $60 I saved I can live with it.

This is a great little DIY kit. Got it all set up with no problems. Instructions were easy to follow, the only problem I see is that even with a 'slosh/snail guard' it still needs to be paid attention to. Only of my floats, in a guard is not traveling correctly and making the on/off as smoothly as it should. Gets partially there and the relay will buzz for a second or two before kicking on or off. This is just maintenance and probably just needs cleaning, I'm guilty of ignoring it. Besides that, works great... been set up and using for 3 months with no issues. Just make sure cleaning the switches is added to your maintenance schedule.

I'll echo what the others have said. It's a kit that works, for cheap. I'm going to go ahead and say the kit is flawless...with the following exceptions. Biggest thing that bugs me is that the relay is really loud. Each time it kicks on/off, I can hear it throughout the room. Add that to the fact the float switch is pretty sensitive, it's clacking every 2 minutes. Second thing that keeps it from being completely perfect is not the kit's fault. It's the float switches. I've already had one get stuck in the up position. (No water pumping in, sump ran very low) I just beat on it a little bit to bang the reeds inside around. Been working fine for months now.

This will do anything the name brands will do at a huge savings . It requires that you put it together but as long as you can read and follow the directions to a tee it is simple. You can have an Auto top-off . A small tip instead of cutting into the wire of a aqualifter or other pump just use a cheapy lamp type extension cord and you can hook up as many things as you have outlets for.I dose Kalk and top-off with RO at the same time it runs about 3 times an hour. But you cant even hear the aqualifters run just a slight trickle of water WARNING:To avoid siphoning back out of your tank dont submerge the line in your sump.

I bought one of these about 6 months ago. It was pretty simple to put together, the directions were easy to follow and it works very well. I have an Aqualifter on it for the topoff and also a Maxijet to circulate the water in my reservoir. The only issue might be that the magnetic float switch can be sensitive and will tend to buzz if situated right next to another magnet such as a large pump— but literally we're talking right next to. Mine sits about 4" from my return pump in the same sump compartment though and works just fine. I'd definitely buy another one of these and would recommend it to other people.
