Hydrometer was way off By Anita on 3/2/13

I just received my refractometer and calibrated to the fluid. Tested my aquarium and about fell over! The salinity was reading 1.015! According to my swing-arm hydrometer, it was 1.023. I only have one coral -a very forgiving star polyp - and my fish have been fine. So I obviously need to bring that salinity up. That POS hydrometer is going in the garbage!

Well constructed and simple to use. Just make sure you calibrate with the provided solution - there is a large reminder sticker on the box. So far, appears to work exactly as intended.

I've been reefing for 4 years and always used a cheap plastic hydrometer. I haven't seen great growth in any livestock. Decided to dive into this refractometer. Glad I did. My plastic meter read 1.025. Tried the refractometer and it read 1.030! Made the adjustment and everything is thriving. A must purchase for little cost!

You can't beat the price and the accuracy of this refractometer. The calibration fluid that is included is an added bonus. The lines are large and easy to read.

Printed instructions with ATC unit say to calibrate with RO/DI water. When I do so, the readings on the ATC match the readings I get on a digital Hanna refractometer. However when I test the calibration fluid that came with this unit, it's reading is 1.028.
So do I assume the calibration fluid is off, or trust it, and recalibrate the optical ATC unit, and assume the digital Hanna is off.
I know BRS site says to use calibration fluid to calibrate.

Forget your little floaty tool. This couldn't be easier to use or more exact. Every reefer needs one of these!

I brought a Hydrometer from BFS and it worked great for about two months and then it started to give me reading i just know was off. I did a little research and got the refractometer. the best buy for reading the salinity for my water will never look back.

This is probably one of the best values for a refractometer. It's a rock solid unit with a professional case and dead on accuracy.
The included calibration fluid worked and I can confirm it registers the same parameter on an electronic refractometer. This should be the first item any saltwater aquarium owner should buy.

This refractometer does what it's supposed to do. It feels like a quality build and reads accurately. Just remember to use the calibration solution and do not calibrate to 0.00 or using ro/di water.

This tool is great and consistent. Comes well packaged and feels well worth the money. The reason why I am not giving it a five star review is because the lines can sometimes be hard to read.
