Works good when it works.. By Mark on 8/18/2014

I bought two of these pumps for a future build I had coming up. After buying the new house, I started the build and installed these pumps Fed 2014. Used them for ATO since my RODI was in the basement. They worked great for that purpose. Now, one has already gone out. The gears stripped in it and the head no longer turns. So its only August 2014 and I didn't even get a year out of them but since I bought them over a year ago, Im past warranty. Warranty is not the issue, but paying 80 for a pump and only getting that long out of it when its only on maybe twice a day for 10 min at a time is not good. So I guess Im going to have to go a different way. The pump works good, never had an issue, its just the time you get out of it.. And after reading the reviews, Im not the only one with this problem.. So seems to be BRS might want to figure out what is up with the gears stripping out and fix it.. Just hope my second one on my other tank lasts long enough for me to come up with a better system..
Great for top offs By Brent on 8/16/2014

I bought this to suck from a 5 gallon RO/DI top off container and connected it to a timer to come on an intervals throughout the day. I have a HOT skimmer that requires a nearly constant water level to operate effectively, and this top off doser does that perfectly. I am very happy with this product. Please do be aware, though, that as the description stated, if you mount this inside of a cabinet (like I did), you can hear it when it is running.

Got product installed mounted without any issues. A bit slower than I expected but does the job flawlessly. Have it hooked up through a Apex IO Breakout box.
Great ATO pump By Moni on 6/26/2014

This pump has been a great ATO solution for me - the lack of siphon and ability to raise a good head let me put my reservoir in a closet, well away from my display tank. The previous aqua lifting pump I had used couldn't even get water raised from the floor into the tank, so I had to leave my ATO jug on a shelf or chair to give it a head start.
I've been using this for a month now with no problems.

I bought the 50ml top off pump and won a pair of 1.1ml dosers so I am using all three for a couple months now. No complaints yet, a little noise but running in the basement offers no issues for me. I hope to get more than a year out of these otherwise I would have to agree with the others above. Limited lifetime doesn't sound too appealing but I like them so far.
don't buy. By mike d nyc on 3/19/2014

i bought this pump to push RO/DI from my reservoir through a kalk-stirrer. a peristaltic pump with a regular rate connected to a controller seems like a safer choice than relying on a variable rate of evaporation dictating when and how much kalkwasser is introduced into my system which would have been the scenario if i just piggybacked the kalk-stirrer onto my level-sensing ato. the reasonable price and italian-origin of the pump made it easy to pull the trigger. and since many people might be considering this setup, i'll offer my experience as a warning:
from the very beginning, the pump immediately made a moderate grinding noise when activated. within days, the noise had intensified some. i contacted BRS to ask if this was normal for this unit. the BRS rep asked if i'd been running the pump for extended periods of time... which i had not. he explained that this pump was meant to run for "30-40 minutes" at a clip. i'd never exceeded this runtime but after hearing this, i took note that the pump housing got very warm after a few minutes of use. the grinding noise continued to get worse and increased to the point where it was clearly audible over the other ambient sounds of my reef despite being buried inside a stand made of 3/4" plywood and lined with sound absorbing foam sheets. and so i arranged to exchange the pump for an identical replacement.
the replacement pump makes a very loud "clunk" sound whenever it activates, but does not have the grinding sound of its predecessor. the clunk, however, is sufficient to cause featherdusters and coco worms to retract, startle my fish, and annoy my wife. also, it being unadvisable to run this pump for more than 30-40 minutes without a cooldown period made it insufficient for my needs.
unfortunately, BRS says i'm past the 30-day return window and so i'm not eligible for a refund. i won't editorialize further except to say that despite being out $90, i'm going to throw this pump in the trash rather than risk using a product that doesn't do the job i require of it, and that i don't trust at all.
i'm always optimistic when a manufacturer resists the urge to bang out junk in a chinese sweatshop - and i'm happy to pay more for a better product made by skilled workers earning a fair wage - but this pump and its replacement were completely useless.

This pump is working great so far. Minimal noise from gears. Much better than I was expecting from reading reviews prior to purchase. I use it as top off so it's precision does not need to be exact. But I love not having to top off by hand. We will see its longevity and hopefully my review will stand. Really easy to install.

I really like these pumps for ATO on tanks up to 150 Gallons. Anything tanks larger than that with a lot of evaporation will work these pumps for hours. At least it did on my 700 gallon system.
CON-- The last one I ordered did not have the mounting plate in the box. I contacted Customer Service and did not get a response back.

As the title says, It's a great product for the price. No problems at all. Functions beautifully! My 1 complaint(If Any) would be it is a little noisy. Honestly, It isn't a big deal in my case. Otherwise, I love the doser. I would recommend it to anyone looking for one.

I've had my brs dosing pump in use for maybe a couple years under very limited use as it only ran for 30-45 minutes once a day. Gears finally went out on it(they sounded terrible for the last 8 months or so). If you get this pump on sale it's probably a decent buy but otherwise $90 for a 1-2 yr pump isn't so great.

After less than a year of actual use on this pump it has failed. It is paired with my reef keeper system, and has been in actual use for 1.5 months .Grinding sound like anything with gears would make during a failure (like grinding gears in a car) pump has power but arm no longer spins. Definitely glad this didn't happen two weeks ago when we were on vacation. I really like bulk reef supply, but this pump is a POS put your $80 towards a better made system.

Good for an ATO but wouldn't use it for KALK. By b on 6/2/2013

I'm now on number #2 the first pump lasted 2-3 years it still runs but has a horribly loud grinding sound for the past 6-8 months. Tapping it every once in a while quiets it down but not always. I did have an issue with it not working once but again tapping it got it going again. It's fine for a straight ATO, however I wouldn't run Kalk with it due to all the issues people are having. I would find a more precise way. 1.1ml pumps work amazing, it's a shame the 50ml have so many problems.
The second pump I just received just a few weeks ago already seems a lot better then the first. It's quieter right from the get go. If I can get 3 years out of this one I'll be happy.
Both pumps failed a little after 1 year mark. By PT on 5/24/2013

Both pumps started to grind around 7-8 months and fail right after the 1 year warranty. I called BRS when the pumps started to grind and the help support reassured me that some noise was normal. I called after the pumps failed, mentioning the prior grinding and was assured that the pump was now out of warranty and nothing could be done.
Still good value for the $ even if it fails. By William on 3/29/2013

First BRS 50ml dosing pump failed just shy of 2 years. I use exclusively for Kalkwasser at a rate of about 3 gallons per day coupled with a aqua controller for redundancy.
Same reason as others have had, motor runs but the gears no longer strong enough to spin.
After researching for a different pump to replace this failed pump, I came to the conclusion that the higher quality dosing pumps were in the price range of $300.
So knowing that I'm still saving even if I have to replace this pump more often.

used mine for about 6 months then took a break... started using it again this fall then it failed. pump sounds like it is trying to work but the pinch roller will not turn. I was counting on this pump to keep my Ca levels right but I may be looking for a better product.
Steer clear, high failure rate By cardiffgiant on 11/23/2012

Mine failed after a few months of normal use. The motor turned, but the rollers did not. It was under warranty and BRS replaced it quickly. There are a handful of failures with these pumps with members of my local reef club. I recommend steering clear.
