A much better alternative to the cheaper API kit and VERY accurate. By redfishsc on 10/3/10

I purchased the Salifert kit b/c I was tired of not being able to read the API's color accurately. Worth the cost difference, although it could be cheaper.
Very easy and quick. Much quicker than the API.
The kit easily and accurately reads down to about 0.2ppm, which is a very good low range kit. You have to read the instructions (apparently someone else here didn't) to interpret the low-range readings, but it's very easy.
I was actually dosing trace amounts of nitrate (0.3ppm per day, max) to aid in macroalgae and soft coral growth. This was beneficial to the soft corals, they grew more when I started dosing the nitrate. My tank stayed at 0.0ppm prior to dosing. SPS seemed indifferent, didn't bother them at all.

In general, Salifert tests kits are a great balance between affordability and accuracy, and the Nitrate test kit is no exception. The nitrate test is one of the more complex tests to perform, requiring the addition of multiple chemicals to your water sample, but the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Like most Nitrate test kits available, Salifert's kit uses a color comparator technique where you compare your prepared samples color to a color card to determine the Nitrate level in your sample. Although the kit results can be read in most lighting situations, Saliferts advice about reading in diffuse sunlight makes the results easier to read and probably results in less chance of an error reading the result. The kit offers two ranges (0.2-10 mg/L and 2-100 mg/L) using a single prepared sample for convenience. A good buy to monitor Nitrate levels.
