I bought a 200w neotherm and was pleased for the first couple months. One night I woke up to a terrible smell, I came to the living room and found smoke rising from my sump. The heater had ruptured right in the center. Some black tar had oozed out from the hole. Luckily I got to it quick enough that no livestock was harmed, but the smell is still throughout the house. This heater is too expensive to have problems like this.

I read the threads regarding the 200w heaters exploding but I didn't think it would happen to me. And this morning it did. I heard a pop while I was getting ready for work this morning and standing next to the tank. I looked into the cabinent and a puff of thick white smoke rising from the sump. I ran to my macbook and shut all flow off because I knew what was happening. On the way to the computer I heard another pop. When I moved the cabinent walls off of the stand the smell hit me. I pulled the heater out and it had exploded with 2 long slits the length of the heater. That black stuff that I read oozes out of the heater had started to leak into the tank but was contained in one chamber of the sump. I quickely dismantled the sump and removed two fish I was holding in the fuge chamber. They were close to dieing but I managed to save them. The foul water hadn't made it's way into the DT because I knew exactly what h ad happened and I ran to the computer. Had I not been home everything would have been dead in there. The thick grease that is contained in these heaters is almost impossible to clean up and it took alot of papertowels and arm-power to get most of it out of the sump. I was late to work several hours but the tank seems to be fine. I should have pulled this heater out last year when I read the Exploding Cobalt Heater threads online. I will never use another one of these. My eheims have been rock solid and I will only use those going forward.
Stopped Working By Aron on 4/25/2015

Heater stopped working after about a year, luckily the apex alarm went off as the temperature was falling and allowed me to put in a backup heater to save everything. When it was working properly it was a nice heater...not sure if the 200W was true because didn't perform like my other 200W heaters.

I started out buying a 75watt (from a different store), and keeping the setting at 78 degrees in my sump, water stays at 77.4-77.8.
I have recently ordered a 150w from BRS for in my display tank. My experience with the 75w i would expect nothing less then a great product from the 150w.

Used this heater for just over a year. I love the concept but the heater stopped working right after the warranty went out - bought in late 2013. If I found out that they had improved the component quality I'd buy one again.

I have this on my bio cube and it fits perfectly in the back chamber the low-profile give me great room for filter media. I've had it running continuously for around eight months now with zero issues been able to keep constant temperature of 78 which I've checked with secondary thermometers on my apex unit

I had the 75w for a 20 gal frag tank. Kept it set at 80 deg which kept the tank around 78.5 deg for about a month. Came home one night to find my acros in serious distress. Tank temp was 70 deg. There had not been a power outage. Heater was still set at 80 deg. Put the acros in my DT. Unplugged and plugged the heater in and reset it to 80 deg. Water came up to about 79 degrees that night. Came home the next night and the tank temp was 72 deg. I won't use this heater any more.

Nothing here warrants the price of these heaters. The shape is convenient for a sump. They are reasonably accurate. I have owner three and none have lasted more than 24 months. Each has gone with an audible pop and the acrid smell of burning insulation. One of the three tripped the GFCI. None were kept full submersed.

I purchased the 150W on NOVEMBER 22, 2014 and have been using it since. I sleek design and digital temperature sensor is great, but it was not enough to keep my 50 gallon aquarium warm during winter. I had to supplement with another 150w heater. I am looking forward to the new line of 300w+ dual heaters!

This heater worked great for the first six months or so but then I came downstairs one morning to find my anemones, corals, and clam in obvious distress. Put my hand in the water and got a serious shock. The bottom seam of this heater had split and was electrifying my livestock. Managed to save about half of them, but will stay far away from these in the future.
Blew up! By Flannigan on 2/8/2015
Flannigan wouldn't recommend this product to a friend
I had the 200 watt heater and thought it was great for the first six months of use, until it blew up in my sump. Five minutes after I got home from work, I heard a loud band, like a firecracker. I wasn't sure what it was until I noticed my dogs smelling the fish tank stand. I walked over to the tank and started smelling a very bad burning plastic/electrical smell. By the time I got to the tank, so much smoke was around it. I opened up the cabinet to see the the heater had blown up and was bubbling smoke into the water. I quickly unplugged the heater and opened all my windows and doors. There was so much smoke, I could barely see anything in the cabinet. On top of that, the heater released a gooey black tar like substance into the tank that was next to impossible to clean up. If i wasn't home, my whole house would have filled up with toxic smoke and possibly made my dogs sick or something. This was my experience and have noticed from internet searches that I'm not alone. Think twice before getting one of these.

So far, I really like this heater. It works well, and I'm happy I'm not adding a glass tube to my tank. It seems nearly impossible to break this thing. I gave 4 stars because the temp numbers are a bit off on the thermometer dial. I have the dial set to 76 degrees, and the tank is staying at a rock solid 77.6.

Good heater, if you don't mind the price or lack of fine tuning By Bruce on 12/14/2014

Got a little 50w that I used in a 10g for baby Banggai and have also used it in 5g buckets for rotifers. Easy to use and holds temp well. Have used other brands that forget the setting if power blinks, these remember.
What I don't like is that it is only adjustable in 2 degree increments and it is a little pricey compared to some similar functioning and equal quality units.
4 stars for quality and performance, lost one for adjustability and price.
Heater blew up in sump and filled house with smoke, nuked tank By Exxon Valdez on 12/3/2014
Exxon Valdez wouldn't recommend this product to a friend
This heater exploded in my sump and filled my house with smoke that smelled like an electrical fire. A black, sticky, tar like substance was floating on the surface of the water that smelled like road tar mixed with gasoline or paint thinner. I lost half my fish and corals and had to use a degreaser on the sump and all equipment to get the foul smelling tar out. I thought I was getting the best heater on the market. I have contacted the company, but I am not happy with their response. The guys who own Cobalt Aquatics were associated with the stealth heater explosions and recall. You'd think they would have learned. Do not buy these heaters.

I bought a 200W heater for my 40G tank because it was supposed to be one of the best on the market after 3 months it could no longer regulate the temperature, than after about a week i woke up to a burning smell and it had cracked the casing and was burning up inside my sump, i don't know if anything has died yet but if they do i will make another post, i emailed their customer service waiting on a response.

bam! just plugged in after letting sit in cold tank for 15-20 min, per instructed, and checked back on it later in the day and has sat at 78 degrees on the dot every since plugging in. i used 2 on my tank for a back up and to help share the work load so i can increase longevity of heater. pick a few up. look modern, sleek, sexy, and feels like nice balance/weight = quality. enjoy

I would not buy one of these again. As mentioned in other reviews this heater stops working and takes out anything else its plugged into. For me it was my heater controller. it also leaked voltage into the tank.
4 heaters. product FAIL. By Subodh on 8/6/2014

An otherwise neat looking product; This **was** what I once thought the best heater in the market. On my 200 Gallon with a 50 Gallon sump, I've tried almost every other brand and they all eventually fail within 6 months. This one lasted a bit longer than that (about a year). Average life of the heater seems to be around 6-8 months. I've had 4 of these (200 W) explode in my sump and trip the GFCI.
Yes, I understand salt+electricity is a bad combo to begin with itself but I hate the smell/stink when these blow. They aren't cheap by any means so I might as well switch back to the glass heaters. At least they visibly get dirty and don't explode like these.
For those who're interested, these heaters all fail at the bottom plastic edge with a big crack (weird considering the top is what most people would assume to fail first) and if you're not running a GFCI + probe on your aquarium, these heaters (and most likely most all other brands) can leak serious voltage.
