Needs some tweaking to avoid clogging if you run a lot of media. By Brennen on 3/26/2014

This is a nice reactor. For my 80 gallon system with standard GFO and high bio-load it is difficult to tumble standard GFO in here without it leaving the reactor into my sump. I recommend switching the carbon to run first and GFO second. Otherwise the large amount GFO tumbles into the carbon section and clogs it within two days. I had to cut out the bottom and top of the carbon section to increase flow to tumble the GFO better in the second chamber. I basically made the plastic inserts a little wider on the intake to get better flow to avoid clogging. I cut the bottom on the 2nd chamber also but left the top alone on the exit. I have it setup now to were it never clogs. There are some good YouTube video mods if you run into this challenge like I did. Always rinse the first chamber with the second chamber empty. Then take out the second chamber put in the media and rinse that chamber and your good to go. This will save you a lot of hassle. Rinsing the carbon into tumbling GFO is a bad idea if you run them reverse like I do. Also if you run this standard rinsing GFO into the carbon side will make it clog easier. Rinse them separately starting with the first chamber. Tanks over 100 gallons, use two separate reactors. Or run this with one with an additional single reactor for extra GFO. This will allow you to tumble them properly using standard grade, unless you are willing to pay extra for high grade media.

It does what you need it to. Nothing stupid about the design. I powered it with an old max jet 900 I had. Works great. GFO and nitrate sponge for me. You could use it for anything I think

I bought the one with the pump. It works flawlessly. Takes a little bit getting use to dialing it in just right to get the GFO tumbling just right but once you do that it is one of the best investments I have made into my take.

plastic bracket does not hold. Order item # 200004 By Doug on 3/18/2014

When I first installed this item, the canisters were not vertically level and were on a crazy tilt. I had to stick a piece of wood behind it because the plastic bracket just gave way to to much of a bend and the liquids did not circulate as well as I wanted.
I called up BRS and they told me about item # 200004. Its a medal dual bracket that fits the dual reactor and is very sturdy. I installed it and everything is working perfectly and I don't need to worry about how well everything is mixing.

Definitely solidly built, easy to change media, and like the long hose. Wish it had a hang on the back option though.

I agree with the other reviews about the bracket but it works fine. Everything was easy to install and the pump is quite.

From opening the box to water running through the system, probably less than 20 minutes. So far absolutely no issues with keeping it tuned, leaks, or flow. Also big plus was the long hoses to and from the sump to allow for a wider variety of placement.

I love every thing about the dual reactor except the support frame. The reactors are heavy duty and well built. That is good to see. The frame needs to be stronger over time i'm sure the frame will have to be replaced. This is the only reason i'm giving it 3 stars.
Great Reactor... just needs slight improvements! By Dr. Chad on 2/7/2014

I've had the reactor for just over 4 weeks, now. T have done my first GFO/Carbon change over and so far I'm impressed! The canisters come off with no issues, I'm able to do a full media swap within 10 minutes!
One of my complaints, which is mentioned in the BRS video series, is that you will find yourself having to adjust the ball valve over the period of the 4 weeks. I found myself having to adjust it at least once a week to open it more and more to allow the flow to increase over the age of the GFO.
The Second, is the plastic housing is a little flimsy. With the weight of the chambers filled with water and media, it tends to bend forward and doesn't allow the water to flow through the middle; but more towards the front. So you do not get an equal amount of water flow throughout the cambers. A simple fix for me, I grabbed a 1/4" piece of Fiberboard or MDF, cut it to size, and glued it in place, behind the mount. It has helped to push the bottom of the mount up to keep everything level for a more balanced flow of water inside the chambers.
My recommendation, to BRS, is to add a release valve on the top of the unit, similar to the single Deluxe unit. I had found air entering the first chamber constantly. The easiest way I have found to fix it, is by reducing the ball valve to barely allow water to pass through. This helps fill the chamber and push the air out of the reactor.
Overall, I'm pleased with it, and it was definitely the way to go, rather then having to buy two separate reactors!

Works great, better than more expensive ones I have used. Another great thing about it versus other reactors is that all the gfo and carbon stay in the reactor and do not get flushed into the tank over time.
only one flaw By Jim on 1/26/2014

I agree with the other reviews as far as the bracket is concerned. A sturdy metal bracket would make this much better. Other than that it works as advertised and is a much quicker and neater way to handle filter media.

I ordered the BRS GFO & Carbon Reactor - dual 3 weeks ago from Bulk Reef Supply and recieved it promptly a week later. Set-up was easy except for a minor misunderstanding of how to remove the internal canister lid. Speaking to Ryan, on the online chat feature of the website, quickly assured me that the instructions didn't include the recent modification from a screw off cap to a pop off cap. The unit has been running flawlessly for 2 weeks, and from my experience is a very cost effective way of using active carbon and GFO in your system. The Pros of a Simple design, Cost effective, Overall Performance and Professional Service and Support definately out way the CON of an out of date instruction manual

Just as BRS states, this product is simple too use, setup, and maintain. Its build quality matches the RO/DI units and is a nice looking piece. I run GFO and Carbon and everything looks great! Thanks BRS for another great product.

I purchased the dual carbon and GFO reactor after a battle while hair algae. I needed to start controlling phosphates and wanted some clarity in the water column. Hands down one of the best purchases for my tank. Set us the reactor in about 15 minutes. After a couple weeks I saw a reduction in my algae issue. After a couple months it complete, zero algae! The reactor alone wasn't the answer to my algae outbreak, as I also increased water changes and reduced the amount I fed. But I saw a significant increase on the algae reduction once I installed this reactor. Highly recommend it!

Have been using this reactor for nearly a year now with no leaks and or problems on my 55g reef. Dual reactor is great for carbon, gfo, or whatever else you want to experiment with.
With the recommended amount of product for my aquarium in the reactors the recommended pump works well however if you need to add more product for a bigger setup you'll likely need a bigger pump.
