Inconsistent readings By Motti on 11/23/2014

Bought this test kit about a month ago, used is several times and assumed the readings were correct. Last night I tested again for the week and had 100ppm more than what I had a week ago. Nothing was added to the system in the meantime. So I went ahead and did two more tests on the same sample water, and which one gave me different reading.
It's possible that I am doing something wrong, but I found out I am not the only one who had that issue with the meter.

Like others have said, you need to be precise when measuring the reagent and tank water to get accurate results. Because a colorimeter compares the amount of light that passes through the sample to the amount of light that passes through the blank (the cuvette with RODI water and first reagent) to calculate concentration, the cuvette needs to be free of fingerprints and smudges; using a soft, lint-free cloth works great. Also, the cuvette should be placed in the instrument with the same orientation every time to negate inconsistencies with the cuvette and give accurate results. I always have the 10 mL label facing the front, consistency is key. With proper use, this instrument can be a valuable tool.

Accurate but a serious PITA By Greg on 9/22/2014
Greg wouldn't recommend this product to a friend
I found the results accurate assuming you took maximum time and effort into running the test. Quite frankly its just too much of a PITA to do regularly. I find the Red Sea test just as accurate and takes such a shorter time to perform. If they simplified the reagent process it might be fine but having to collect multiple water sources as well as the packets of reagent being a pain just put me in the negative column for this one.

After reading through the many reviews of this product, I was a bit afraid of trying this product due to the reviews saying it was not accurate.
I disagreed totally. You just need to take your time and be accurate with your measurements.
From the very first time I have use this Checker, its readings are within a few numbers of my Red Sea system I was using previously.
Only used a few times By David on 7/30/2014

I just got this checker and so far I've only used it a few times. it was easy to use (no more counting drops) with a little practice it should become second nature to do it. the first few times it takes time just cause you aren't used to it (but that goes with anything else you do). I am a little concerned as to how many test I can get out of the reagents that came with the kit but for now I am good so that bridge will get crossed when it reached.

This is the WORST tester I have ever used. It's sad they put Hanna name on it. It reads 540+ when my calcium was under 300 (because I kept turning my dosing pump down then off). The instructions are clear and easy to read use RODI, reagent, and tank water in said order; bla bla bla.
I wish some one would give me $20 bucks for it only used it 3 time now I use Red Sea and love it. Salifert is ok too.

I have been using this tester along with my salifert test kit and the results are spot on if you are precise with the way you do the test. Any deviation from sample and regent measurements and this test will be thrown off into left field. I have compared the results of this tester with the salifert test kit and it is very accurate. I recommend this product to anyone who takes there time testing, if you like to fly through your tests then do not purchase this product. Also you need to use RODI water for your calibration, so with that being said if your RO system has depleted carbon blocks and filters then forget it. Great product!!!!

I have been using the Hanna checker for 3 months now. I don't think I could ever go back to any other type of test kits. I love the repeat illite of the test results. This is the second of 3 testers I have bought.

I tried this one for some time. Never had accurate or consistent readings. A little surprising because the phosphate checker and alk checker work great and are highly recommended. I use those weekly with great results. They need to go back to work and improve the cal checker.
Varied Results By Andrew on 3/28/2014

I tested my water 10 times within a 1 hour period and literally had 10 different results. The range was from 400 ppm to 600 ppm. I then tested a known calcium level in my Reef Crystal Pro salt mix at 1.025 which ranges from 455-475 at that salinity level. The results were varied as well, from 420ppm to 500ppm (3 tests) The idea is nice but the execution is lacking. I followed the instructions exactly and used the exact amount of tank water. Watched the videos to ensure I was doing it right.

Results are varied, I am not able to get a stable result and when compared to my Salifert Ca kit this kit reads 30-50 points higher.
I recommend watching the video Hanna posted on Youtube for more precise instructions and pointers.
When the instructions tell you to add .1ml of the sample, it is referring to your tank water not the mix in the cuvet or RODI.

This product in my option should not be on the market until it is improved, just took three reading of the same water sample first 381 ppm second 449ppm third 495ppm using the same method, I have the Havana alk tester it's great, also the phosphate it's also very good. But don't spend your cash on the calcium tester if you do you'll be sorry you did.

This isn't what you would expect from Hanna. The read out is great to have but the directions are a bit complicated. As a Nurse I am very used to small dose syringes and using precise lab equipment and this is kind of a pain for me. I have tried 3 tests on the same sample of water and got 3 different reading approx 30-40 points off. I'm still getting used to this test so maybe It will get better. I am a little disappointed =(
Improving Ca test precision By Bob on 12/8/2013

I purchased recently and like the digital readout but was a little concerned about accuracy and precision, primarily due to difficulty in accurately delivering a very small sample size (0.1 ml). I have made some suggestions to Hanna but in the meantime have revised my test procedure which seems to give me more precise results.
One possible solution would be to use a 0.1 ml syringe, however, these are fairly expensive and fragile. Alternatively, I revised my procedure as follows:
Instead of initially filling the cuvette to 10 ml with RO/DI water, I fill to 8.5 ml after adding 1 ml Reagent A and then press Add C2 on the meter.
To obtain the 0.1 ml sample I add exactly 1.0 ml sample to a clean cuvette and dilute to 10 ml with RO/DI water. I cap and invert 3-5 times. Then I take exactly 1.0 ml of this diluted sample and add it to the test cuvette. Then I finish filling to the 10 ml mark with RO/DI water and then add Reagent B and proceed as usual. This results in a more accurate delivery of 0.1 ml of sample.
The reproducibility and accuracy of the resulting readings are much improved.
Much better with improved reagents By Matt on 10/5/2013

I'd been getting variable results, but I found a post that said they had reformulated the reagents to improve the precision. I contacted Hanna and they sent me replacement reagents (and noted that they had recalled the old ones from retailers).
So, I'm getting much better readings now than I was before and if you've written it off, you may want to try it again with new reagents.

However, after following the instructions in detail I could not get a good reading.

Checker is inaccurate due to being overly complex and requiring absolutely pure RO/DI By Adam on 4/16/2013
Adam wouldn't recommend this product to a friend
I have had this checker for close to a year now and have finally completely given up on it. It was a waste not only on the checker itself but also on the $20 reagent packs. I have never gotten the same value twice from it. Using the same RO/DI water and sample water. I follow the exact same test procedure every time. My Hanna alk checker gives the same number on repeat tests and is invaluable. But the Ca checker seems to just randomly choose a number. This i believe is due to the 1/10 ratio being used. Perhaps the checker would operate correctly if i used lab grade RO/DI but i am unwilling at this point to spend another cent on it.

Complicated to use, but provides good accuracy By Miles on 2/13/2013
Miles would recommend this product to a friend
This test took some practicing to get right. There are several steps involved in this test involving 2 separate reagents, RO water, and the sample. Ensure that the RO water you use in the first step is indeed at 0 TDS or you can very easily end up with an out of range reading (over 600). I was never good a titration in chemistry class, so this test while complicated gets rid of the frustration factor that comes with titration.
