I could recommend to friend smarter than me By Carmen on 7/21/2015

I've used the kit three times now (attempted 5 times and gave up) and came up with different results each time. The biggest problem I have is the language of the directions--I poured over the directions for a long time before starting the test the first time. I finally figured out the curvette is the vial, and I'm pretty sure the sample water is the aquarium water, at least I think so...But why couldn't they just say that? But after the 4th step, I am totally lost and will not bother to go into detail here. There are a lot of positive reviews here, so I guess it's just me. I will have to call BRS and see if they can help me. The two out of 5 times I actually got to the end of the test I had drastically different results. Real sure it's operator error, so I won't blame Hanna for that. But the language of the directions are impossible. I mean, why not call a vial a vial? If you mean aquarium water then say so. I would be glad to help write good directions to these test, but someone will have to help me decifer them first.

Here's the deal; yes, it takes extra steps. Conduct the exercise test with patience and precision, and you'll get the results you seek. Always make sure to use the correct components. Good idea to conduct the test while watching Hanna's Calcium Test example on YouTube.

I've done this test over two dozen times and its just off. Unlike the Alk Hanna, this one just does not work good. My numbers are off by a good 100ppm. Iv'e removed the tip, added the tip to the needle and still inaccurate. SAVE YOUR MONEY.
Good for those who prefer colorimetry over titration By Chris on 3/23/2015
Chris would recommend this product to a friend
This product works well. Unfortunately, the method is a little more complicated than the Alkalinity method so it is not necessarily faster/easier than a titration if you have good color vision. I'd would also point out that the method is highly sensitive to contamination. Make sure you use good clean DI water, a little slat creep in your DI water storage container will completely mess up the results.
very accurate - but you need to be very precise. By Justin on 3/23/2015
Justin would recommend this product to a friend
I like this unit because it give me the sense of knowing that my Ca in the tank is spot on when I take my time and measure out the exact amount of water going into the test kits and following the instructions to the T.
A single drop extra can throw off the measurement, so you have to be very accurate. I like to use the Red Sea kit in conjunction with this tester every now and then to make sure I am being accurate, but overall it takes the guess work of out having to read colors. Just take your time, double check that you are being precise and you will be happy with the results.
inaccurate and tedious to use By fruth on 3/11/2015

When I first tried this, I got a constant blinking 600 using RO water. I bought deionized water, and then I got 355. My Red Sea test kit showed 420 for the same sample. I contacted Hanna. They sent me Deionized water and a syringe. I tested it again and same thing (365), Red Sea Test Kit 430. I then tested a fresh mix of Red Sea Coral pro salt, which claims to be 450 CA. With the Hanna, I got 375, with the Red Sea test kit I got 425.
The Hanna is tedious to use. You need to use a magnifying glass to be accurate enough doing the test. And in my opinion, it has questionable accuracy in test results. Not to mention that the cost per test is twice that of the Red Sea when you buy the refills.
Great tester thats easy to read By Christopher on 2/11/2015

Love this tester, no more counting drops, or measuring the amount of reagent used. Worked great at fist then everything got stuck at 600ppm. Contacted hanna and their customer support was top notch, sent me a new set of reagents and even a bottle of their own DI water for testing. Now my testing is right back to being spot on.

Makes testing really simple. Just add reagent fluid, fill to 10 ml line with ro water, and add reagent powder. Once a month i just check to make sure that everything is working perfectly fine by checking the calcium on my newly mixed reef crystals water and I come up with the same reading each time.

Everyone can agree that testing can be a pita, but with hanna it is a breeze. Just collect some water from your aquarium and add some reagent, and place into the tester. Eliminates the headache of wondering if you matched it to the right color on the chart or not.

This is a very accurate tester, but you need to follow the directions to the letter or you will get a blinking 600 reading.

ro/di with zero tds is the key! By CaliOCorals on 1/8/2015
CaliOCorals would recommend this product to a friend
Your readings will be off if you use any water but Ro/di with 0 tds.. make sure to add the 1ml of reagent A before adding the 9ml of ro/di. Make sure your level when filling to the line..
DO NOT GET WATER IN THE DEVICE! which means wipe the vial clean before it goes in every time.. if the vial or inside of the device isnt clean your reading will be off.
Wish it was cheaper per test.

No more "guestimating" when it comes to the life omg saltwater tank. I bought this along with the Alkalinity and Phosphate checker. These gadgets makes it fast, easy and accurate when getting your tank parameters in order. If you love your tank then you'll love these checkers.

Super accurate if you follow directions By Old Salt on 12/1/2014

Testing for calcium is not as easy as testing for alkalinity or phosphates with the Hanna checker. But it's not brain surgery either. The keys are to get the right amount of the first reagent (1 mil) and the right amount of tank water (a minuscule .1 mil--maybe two drops or so from the syringe). It also helps to cut the packet of the second reagent down two sides and form a funnel (as shown in the Hanna video about the checker) so that it goes easily into the curvette. I find this process MUCH easier than counting drops and trying to read the the level of the syringe on my Salifert kit. You do need RODI water, but most of us have that around in one form or another. From what I can tell by cross-checking with Salifert, the Hanna test is spot on and far easier to read. Just take your time and follow the directions.
Inconsistent readings By Motti on 11/23/2014
Motti wouldn't recommend this product to a friend
Bought this test kit about a month ago, used is several times and assumed the readings were correct. Last night I tested again for the week and had 100ppm more than what I had a week ago. Nothing was added to the system in the meantime. So I went ahead and did two more tests on the same sample water, and which one gave me different reading.
It's possible that I am doing something wrong, but I found out I am not the only one who had that issue with the meter.

Like others have said, you need to be precise when measuring the reagent and tank water to get accurate results. Because a colorimeter compares the amount of light that passes through the sample to the amount of light that passes through the blank (the cuvette with RODI water and first reagent) to calculate concentration, the cuvette needs to be free of fingerprints and smudges; using a soft, lint-free cloth works great. Also, the cuvette should be placed in the instrument with the same orientation every time to negate inconsistencies with the cuvette and give accurate results. I always have the 10 mL label facing the front, consistency is key. With proper use, this instrument can be a valuable tool.
