I have been using Red Sea test kits for a while and overall I am very happy with them. The quality is exceptional, and I am a fan of the way that the kits are organized. The API kits come in cheesy plastic trays, while the RS kits come in a hard plastic box that makes it very easy to keep everything together and organized.
The color cards/charts show the basic instructions of how to conduct each individual test but you MUST read the instructions as well. My first couple of tests I was purging the air from the syringe when adding my reagents to the sample, which you are not supposed to do. This resulted in somewhat inaccurate testing. So make sure you read and understand the instructions on your first go around, and thereafter you can use the card as a reference.
These test kits are easy to use, precise, easy to keep organized, and of high quality. I will continue to purchase them in the future.
Easy to Use - Great Value By Milkman on 11/14/2011

I have been using the Foundation multi-kit for about four months and find it very easy to use. The end point color change is very easy to see and the test cn be completed quickly. Having all three of these basic tests bundled together makes it a great value, especially since you can replace the reagents on a test by test basis. I probably check my alkalinity twice as often as I check CA or Mg, so when I need more alk titrant, I can just buy what I need.
Red Sea vs. API By James on 10/30/2011

@AC2020x, why do you think Red Sea gives better results than API? Have you have Red Sea results compared to the results from an independent scientific lab, or are you just guessing?
Good product.. very accurate results By Scott on 10/29/2011

The method of counting the amount of titration to get your levels is much better than judging what color the solution is compared to the card. It is expensive compared to the ATI kits but worth it for the hard to measure chemicals. I don't think I would get this expensive of a kit for nitrites / nitrates and stuff that is usually zero in my tank at least. If you have problems with those though you should get Red Sea kits for everything to chart an accurate number to see what is going on in your tank.
Don't buy any other brand By Jay on 10/27/2011

I am completely sold on Red Sea products - the test kits are so easy to use, the measure down the 0.01 ml scale which is very accurate; They are worth any extra cost they may incur.

If this doesn't change the way you test water, then you aren't interested in simplicity. This test kit, with the titrator, makes life so much easier. You wont be sorry you bought this
Read the instructions! By Michael on 10/14/2011

I tried to test the water twice using just the visual cards that came with the kit with no change in color. I read the instructions and found that I was skipping an important step. Definitely read the instructions first! After I figured out my problem, the test kit works great.
High Quality Test Kit By AC2020x on 10/8/2011

I definitely suggest red sea pro test kits to everyone who is looking to keep an accurate check on these parameters. I used API tests for quite some time and although they are alright for getting a general ideas of what your parameters are.. they are just unmatched compared to these accurate results. The methods of testing are very scientific as well which is great for testing accurately and not messing up somewhere ruining your entire test.
Although it is a bit more expensive that API tests... they are very high quality and def. worth it in my opinion. If you are just looking to keep a few corals alive though.. this accuracy may not be for you. But if you want your corals to thrive under accurate parameters.. then i believe that you need an accurate test kit... I have gotten very reliable and non-varying numbers that I have experienced with some other test kits.
Also there are refills available which is great for it you run out or if your tests expire. Over time this will allow the tests to be cheaper.... Also the videos are great cause they show you exactly how you want to test so you don't get the wrong results!

wanted to try this kit like everyone else who watched the video. Its ok. pros: love the packaging, love the organization, love the titration holder. cons: the syringes are not smooth during titration, the graduations on the syringe should be reversed, the instructions aren't the greatest. truth be told, I'm not much a fan of most tests. i kike the Salifert calcium test more than this one though. the syringe is just a paim to use in the titration holder.

This kit works well, and has a professional feel to it. It's much easier to titrate with this system, as you don't have to worry about spilling while you're stirring it up. I am very much a fan of having mutliple tests bundled into one kit, so that when you're done with it, you can pack it away in a single case and store it.
A few suggestions for Red Sea:
- I would prefer it if the case were hinged, or had some sort of better closing mechanism. Because it doesn't securely "snap" shut, attempting to pick it up by the lid (i.e. when you're taking it out of the packaging box) causes the lid to come right off.
- Because the contents of the kit have such a tight fit, I find it difficult to get the lid back on when I'm done with it. I typically have to rearrange the contents and make several attempts. An improvement would be having a designated spot, within the case, for each component. For example, each syringe could snap into a special spot, so that it's consistently organized, and the box is easier to close, instead of having it all tossed in there.
Please note that these gripes about about the case only, and the *actual* product--the tests themselves--are very good. I would recommend.
One final suggestion to Red Sea: I notice that you don't have a basic saltwater test kit for Ammonia + Nitrite + Nitrate + pH (the standard cycling parameters). I would really love it if you made such a kit that makes use of your colorimetric comparator.

This is a solid test kit and a fantastic deal if you buy the foundations kit. I was looking to add a magnesium test to my supplies. Up until about 6 weeks ago I had just been test calcium and alkalinity as part of my weekly testing routine. As my tank has matured I noticed I was going to need to keep my mag in check also. Up until I purchased this kit I had been using api kits for all my testing. I found the red sea kit very accurate with easy to follow insructions. Everything is color coded also which is nice. My only complaint would that the color transitions during the test can be alittle hard to determine. I generally found with the api kits the color change was dramatic giving clear indication of the test being complete. Other than that I loved the kit. Well packaged and easy to use.

After only a few tests, this is the test kit I should have be using from the beginning. Like BRS TV suggested, the improved (one handed) tritration device makes getting the correct reading easy. The only issue I had was some of the caps were not tightened, so during shipping there was some minor leakage that slightly damaged the 3 laminated direction cards.

When I first looked at the kit I thought it was going to be difficult to use but apon looking at YouTube and reading the manual I felt like I was back in chemistry class taking an open book test with the teacher giving you the page number and answers for the questions. This set is very nice and easy to use. To me it's a no brainer every should have this test kit it's so easy to use.

I thought I would try this test kit as I did not like the one I had, and I was amazed at the difference in my parameters between the tests! I now feel as if I can accurately tell what my calcium, magnesium and alkalinity levels are in my tank! These tests are so easy to read and use that it makes testing your water less of a chore but more of a fun chemistry experiment! The color readings are much more visible going from bright pink to blue or blue to bright pink. They also have videos on youtube to help you out if you are confused. I would never buy another test kit again!

This combo kit is a great way to get all the basic tests in a nice package. The titrator fits onto the top of the vial and the syringe clips in to make titration easy and mess-free. The only thing I would ask for is tritration syringes (that number backward) instead of dosing syringes. You have to measure the amount used, not the amount left (as done with Salifert tests)
