Powerful Pump, moves water By Ryan on 1/12/2015

I have a 110 tall tank and I have this guy mounted about 6 inches from the top water level, this pump can move some water. It is very quiet and outside of it protruding from the side, you hardly notice it is there. I have a newer setup, so I'm sure after the coralline sets in, it will blend right in. I was going to go with the mp10 but due to the thickness of my glass, I had to move up to the mp40. BRS was quick to ship and great customer service.

I got an MP40 for my 55 while it moves a lot of water I should have gotten two. At 65% power they're just noisy enough to be noticed so I try to keep it below 50% power and with 2 it would have been more than feasible.
The other downside is the sticker price I've had mine a month now I'll have to wait and see how long they last before they have to be replaced.

Great pump inside the tank, not so great on the outside.... By Paul on 1/12/2015

Finally bought an MP40 for my 65 gal mixed reef about a month ago. This replaced my two EVO 1500's. The MP40 cleared out a lot of room and looks a lot sleeker. Setup is easy, water side set up is a little tedious, my issue with the water side adjustment is, can i get the vibration lower, so I am constantly adjusting.
Pro's, great pump inside of the tank, great water movement, auto feature for waves is easy and fast to set up. Reef crest is a great random setting. Keeps sand bed clean, and my corals look like they are thriving.
Night mode is a great feature, (allows for a constant ramp down for 10 hours at the same time each night), along with power on and off without the need of reprogramming.
Con's - the noise... my tank is in my living room, I have the TV on a reasonable level, and i can hear this pump. I cannot have this pump in short pulse mode because it drives me insane. I can hear the constant ramping over the TV...
Another issue is the water side vibration, instructions state to ramp the pump at its max setting and move the water side around until there is minimal to zero vibration. I am able to do this, but once the pump ramps down to 25%, vibration increases.... So at different frequencies, the amount of vibration changes...
For the price I expected a perfect pump... On the inside of the tank, it is great. On the outside it has potential to drive me insane, and i'm sure my fish are annoyed with the increased noise as well...
Expensive, But Nothing Else Like It. By Chris on 1/12/2015

$465 is ALOT of money for a pump, almost too much for me, but I made the plunge about a year ago and I can say now I believe they are worth every penny.
Vortechs really shine when you have them hooked up to a aquarium controller such as Ecotech's Reeflink or a Neptune Apex. I would encourage anyone considering one of these to also pickup one of those as well. Adjusting the modes automatically throughout the day to change around the flow patterns has really helped my SPS dominant tank. There is a small learning curve with the programming but it is time well spent. I couldn't imagine going back to static on/off type powerheads.
I liked the first one so much I recently added a second MP40 for the opposite side of my 120.
Wetside is a crap quality garbage By Jerry on 1/12/2015

I bought a VorTech MP40W a couple weeks ago from BulkReefSupply.com. The device is brand new with manufacture date Feb 17, 2014.
Today I was trying to set it up. I know it will be noisy, but the worst story comes. The entire wetside part stuck from running. The magnet in the wetside assembly keeps grinding the plastic cap. I opened the wetside assembly, and found that the axis of the wetside is not even stable. The magnet disk keeps shaking and touches the back plastic cap, eventully grinned it and stuck. Now the funny thing is, after a few times of retry, it seems the plastic is melted and stick together with the magnet disk. I could not even open the wetside assembly now.
I will call BulkReefSupply and VorTech on Monday to find out why. This whole thing stopped working in less than 2 minutes of operation, not even touch the water. What a crap.

One of these pumps out performed all three of the pumps combined i had in the tank previously. Installation is a breeze, and they very little visual space in the display.

Very powerful pump. teamed with a Apex the flow is very customizable. They are considerably larger than the MP10's, but much stronger. Would definitely buy more of them if I had a need.

Put off buying these pumps because of cost. I wish I never waited this long. Spent more money in the long run purchasing other pumps. Have my pair connected wireless to my Apex which makes programming much easier than holding buttons down on controller that it comes with. Great water movement on a 72" long aquarium. I've read comments on pump being loud. I just made sure my wet side was lined up with my dry side and vibration sound basically went away.

Had some basic marine land powerbeads and no comparison! These things are built to last! Easy to install and program to my Apex WXM. Got two 40W's. Was a bit concerned due to the high cost but its well worth the investment. The Apex has some real nice programs for setting the MP40's.

I hate to sound like every other reviewer on here, but this pump is absolutely amazing!
My tank is only a few months old and had been running from day one with two Hydor Koralia 1500 GPH powerbeads. Decided that, before I go all reef crazy, I should upgrade to something that provides a bit more dynamic flow, I should replace them with a Vortech MP40 so I ordered one, took it home and installed it in place of both Koralias. I fired it up and was astounded at the amount of garbage it blew out of the live rock and off the substrate!
The pump itself is remarkably quiet considering the motor isn't under water, it's easy to program, easy to clean and much less of an eyesore than other powerbeads I've tried. In fact, I love it so much, I just ordered a second MP40 so I can take full advantage of the capabilities of these remarkable pumps and I can go all SPS crazy with my tank.

This pump will out perform any other with ease. The undertow it creates keeps my sandbed clean without disturbing it. I control mine with my reef link and it is very easy to adjust the flow & patterns with my ipad using Ecotech Marine's app. They are worth every penny.

A friend tried to convince me that I wanted Exotechs but I rebelled and went with a Tunze. Don't get me wrong. The Tunze is a great pump and will be working in a new FOWLR I'm building. For a reef though the MPs are amazing. An MP10 on one and end an MP40 on the other of my 90G works wonders with the water. The randomness of the program keeps rock and sand clear. I can even see that behind the rock is staying clean. Add an Apex and it's just that much better.
My only complaint is that they are louder than the Tunze. It's certainly not unbearable but it's there.

This pump is amazing. I have one on my 90 gallon and it moves a lot of water. All of the program features are great for the corals and my corals have seemed to love the movement of the water. This pump is a little bit noisy but nothing to noticeable because my skimmer is to loud anyways to hear it.

Sure it makes some noise while operating. No you can point it in whatever Direction you want. Yes it's expensive. That all being said nothing else does what this pump does. Especially when paired with another ecotech pump. It transfers no heat. Takes up very little precious room inside of the aquarium. Looks attractive. And creates a plethora of different flows and wave patterns. Pair them up with an apex and you are only limited by your imagination.

This is a nice pump. I hooked this up to a reeflink I got for my radion lights. It's really neat that you can schedule the modes throughout the day with it. I did find that upgrading your vortech to use the reeflink requires you to use your IPad app. I tried it with my PC and it didn't work. It could be because my PC was in a different room.
The flow is great. The control is excellent. I still can't believe how much crap got pulled out into the overflow.

I purchased 2 of these and really like them. I did have to contact Ecotech about one of the wet sides as it was very loud. The shaft had a lot of play and cause the magnet to wear on the back plastic cap.
Ecotech was very quick in getting me a replacement, unfortunately the replacement was damaged. It had a crack on the magnets plastic coating where it looked like the screw was over tightened. They had me a new one the next day and it resolved the issue.
Overall very pleased with these!

ive had several pumps for my 300 gallon mixed reef tank, other than ruining the Tunze wave boxes I'm running 2 Vortech 60's on a 300 gallon and the tank is doing great... would never go back to anything else... I've read a lot of reviews on that there loud. i have to say. as i have 2 of the 60's running. one makes no noise at all. its as quiet as a church mouse, where the 2nd one i bought just a few weeks later, does make a little noise... it might be just depends on the one you get. my GF has a Vortech 10 on her 35 tank & u can't hear that one run either... so we have a 10,60.. that are super quiet, then another 60, that has a little noise.... but they work great!!

Let it be known this is my second set of vortech pumps I purchased from BRS. The first set were the MP60's and let me tell you they move the water around. The problem I was having was my tank (300) gals is 36" wide and there were some so called dead zones. Now it looks like a tidal reef. I realize my corals don't need that much flow to keep healthy but the tank sure does. I hooked them up to my Apex which I also purchased from BRS and never worry about anything. Once a day I have the nutrient cycle run for 2 hrs and that kicks every piece of detritus up into the filters. There are pumps... and there are vortechs.
