Review of VorTech MP40w ES By Reefkeeper057 on 1/12/2015

The VorTech MP40w ES was the first adjustable flow water pump I have purchased. Admitedly there were two concerns I had prior to the purchase, even after considerable research. The first was the price and the second was many reviews that referenced how loud it operated.
The MP40w ES was purchased to go on my 55g soft coral tank and replace my existing water pumps, a Hydor Koralia Evolution 600 and Hydor Koralia Evolution 1050 (that's right 1050).
I left the Koralia 600 in place. When facing the tank, it is mounted on the upper left hand side of the tank, toward the back, pointed behind about 50lbs of liverock. This is to keep deadspots at a minimum. The MP40 is mounted where the Koralia 1050 was, on the right side of the tank facing the opposite direction, toward the front and about 4" from the water line.
First off, READ THE DIRECTIONS. I wanted to see this thing in action immediately and it took great restraint not to just hook this thing up and turn it on. Remember the second concern I had with this pump...the noise level? Well, if you don't follow the directions and set the pump up properly I believe this is where many (not all) folks went wrong when they complained about high noise levels.
In my opinion this pump is very quiet. When the MP40 is turned up past 75% max output, it is not as quiet as the Koralia Evolutions. However, it when set to 75% or higher, it only emits a mild hum. For my size tank anything past 50% is too much flow and when you max any piece of equipment out it won't last as long. When set to 50% and below the MP40 is very quiet. To add context to what I define as very quiet....put it this way....I do not want to hear my tank buzzing, huming or splashing. It has to be as quiet as one of those rock fountains. The kind that when you turn it on it sounds like water trickling.
This pump does a great job. When I turned it on it started without any trouble, immediately stired up ditritus, and kept it suspended until it went down the overflow. When the MP40 is set to a constant speed it still seems to have random flow. I watched my soft corals nonstop for about 20 minutes and was very impressed at how their movement was random. This is common sense but one thing to keep in mind if you have corals. Start out slow and see how they react. Changing a powerhead is like changing the lighting. The animals in your tank will need time to adjust. One common problem I have read about is an unsuspecting anenome getting too close to the powerhead and getting chopped up. The MP40 comes with a foam cover so if you have anything that may get caught in it I suggest using the foam initially and see how your critters react.
The bottom line is this pump is expensive but worth the extra money. There are a lot of the MP40 reviews online. Check multiple sources before making a decision to purchase any piece of equipment. This hobby is expensive enough without wasting extra money. Good luck!
Better than I expected! By Randy on 1/12/2015

My biggest concern before purchasing and running was if it was going to move enough water in the hard to get to places, especially for the price and the fact that you can't aim them, but with the undertow it creates there are no problems. I admit, I am cycling and haven't seen how it performs with corals, but after watching movement of bubbles and food (generating ammonia) I have no worries. If these are in your price range I don't think you can really go wrong. Oh! And much more silent than I have read concerns about too.

I ordered a mp40 tried to hook it up and they sent me the wrong power supply. So now I have to wait another week for echo tech to send the right power supply. I think they should test their products before sending it out

This is a great pump and well worth the cost . Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because programming it for the first time is a pain and there's no reason for the price they can add a phone application or drop down display on the controller to make programming simpler.

This is the third Vortech I own. There's nothing bad I can say about it. It works as it is advertised. I highly recommend it.
powerful and sleek powerhead By Paul on 1/12/2015

Although a bit pricey I really like this power head. Set up was easy and direction were good to follow. I'm still not 100% sure on the mode programing and night mode but will be spending more time getting that programmed. One thing would be good since I have the Radions would be having the similar software to program via computer. I love the variable speed adjustment. The flow definitely stirred up the debris very nice and was easily sucked up into the over flows of my 220g
Great pump but... By Jason on 1/12/2015

This is a great pump, I purchased this after being advised by the folks at Ecotech Marine. It is awesome but need two to keep from blowing corals to death on one side to adequate flow in the opposing side of the tank. I have a 90 gallon tank.

These rank at the top of my list for best purchases for my tank. Those of us who are sticklers for neat and orderly displays, the Ecotech pumps provide for the cleanest look that won't detract from your display tank!
I originally bought two MP10wES for my 125 gal reef tank but after reviewing recommended flow rates for most LPS/SPS corals in my tank size, I opted for the MP40wES. I'm very glad I did! My corals love the flow! BRS customer service was top notch and expedient at returning and sending out my new pumps. If you are on the fence about these, BUY THEM!

Hello, fellow reefers
I have been in the hobby for two years with a lot of up and down,
Just like everyone new to the hobby. When i saw the price tag for this pump. I was shocked "465 for a pump that is even more expensive than an ipad mini. But after buying this pump . Its worth every dollar.
Ask any true reefer who has alot of the latest and greatest equipment.

This is a great product...it is expensive but it is an important part of any reef tank. The programming it not easy....the buttons don't really respond to touch very well ...push and hold....and be patient, processor is a little slow. It would be really nice to have software to program and upload to the controller. Really tough to program two or more up under your tank.

This is the second one that I have purchased. I like the programing options and ease of use. The only down side is that you cant aim them in different directions to change flow patterns without moving the entire unit.

as good as they claim. with so many options and variable speeds it is not hard to imagine why this is touted as the best in power heads. Although I wish it were a little less pricey, you do get what you pay for, and this is worth it.

This is a powerful pump. I have 2 MP40 in my 75 reef and these things really have a kick to them. In my opinion they are to powerful, I have them running at 30% max controlled by my apex. I initially had a problem with them stirring up my sand bed but I found a happy medium while getting enough flow through the tank. Placement is key with these, I have had them running for about 6 months and still am on the fence if placement is better more toward the back of the tank rather than mounted center on the sides. A little experimentation is needed. The build quality is more than exceptional. Great product distributed by BRS!!

I've got two of these MP40wES' on my 90g FOWLR, and absolutely love 'em. Paired up with an Apex, you can do just about anything with them, and the fact that I'm now emptying my skimmer cup more often proves that these are doing a much better job of keeping the tank clean than my old Koralia's ever were. The only knock on them is the price, which is why I bought one of mine used and one during the recent 20% off sale.

Do I really need to review this? No, because the product and company reputation is already well known. I have all Ecotech lights and pumps. I can't imagine being happier with anything else. Well worth the money for this pump to accompany by MP10Ws.

I'm running 2 mp40wes pumps on a 75 gallon mixed reef tank.(48x18). i run them 70% at maximum..love the control and ease of these pumps.. i have them on both sides one higher then the other so the current is not crashing with each other..planning on upgrading my tank to a 120 (48x24x24) and running 3 mp40wes putting the third one on the back wall.. if could go back i would purchase 2 mp10wes for the back wall just because i don't need so much power in the rear pushing forward…i went bigger bc these motors ramping up and down can be a lil louder then a normal pump so running them on lower power helps.. it also helps to keep the motors cooler being they're not running as hard..the motor tends to heat up but definitely runs cooler at lower levels..and if you ever want to turn them up to stir things up prior a water change you can do so and really stir things up as well.. i run the light pink all day ( might be lagoon not sure but it alternates) and at 12am it goes into sleep mode for a few hrs before it turns back on to the light pink in the morning.. looking forward to mixing things up with different modes on my neptunes system and controlling my lights as well ( 3 radions xr30s ) over all great pump only negative really is they can get a lil loud and hot to the touch if ran on high a lil cooler if ran lower..the price is a lil high but anything good usually is in this hobby.. oh and there easy to clean and disassemble… if you have the money purchase them but don't believe there measurements this is one of those things to go bigger on and run lower power on then going smaller and running on maximum…

Best wave maker hands down. If you have the money (which is alot considering what its for), and you're wondering about this product, all of these reviews should answer any performance questions. They are worth it. Your fish, coral, and liverock will thank you.

Although the cost can shy people away it saves a lot of money over having to have 5 or more of the other power heads and then a wave maker. The mp40's keep my acros looking great while being able to adjust the flow of both pumps with wireless up grade they come with standard now, keeps things simple. I use reef crest during the day then switch it over to lagoon at night. These two pumps were actually enough to power my 225 by them selves.

they do work like advertised, they have maintained my sand bed cleaner, and they do have power to stir things around.my corals are happier.
now nothing is perfect, the eye sore that was in the display tank is now on the out-side,the noise level is there but the pump works so well that i will live with it.would be a 5 star if there would be some kind of adjust-ability (flow direction) even minimum would great.
i have a mp40 and a mp10 as a support. master/slave set-up and it was an easy set-up.i have a 6ft 125 gallon tank, this set-up seems to be the minimum required for me since i keep them at 70% due to the noise level goes up at any higher setting.

I've been a fan of EcoTech Radions ever since I purchased my first one about 8 months ago. So naturally I was was very keen on getting one of these. Finally was able to get one and I'm completely happy.
Opened it up Followed the instructions.Had it up and going in like 15 min. And that includes pairing it with the WXM module I bought for control. And its extremely quiet. Just a slight hum is all I hear at highest power.
Only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that is stationary No way to direct the flow except straight ahead.

Driver is cheaply made and broke. EcoTech would not cover under warranty. $160 replacement part. Buy more reasonably priced pumps. It can be a little loud even if you do take the 30 min to position the pump in that perfect spot.
