Pros: Works awesome, very quiet
Cons: Kind of bulky for a hang on the back model, slight eye sore in the tank
Notes: Possibly a common error, but when starting this skimmer for the firs time, leave the cache can off, i had mine adjusted to the very bottom and water kept spilling over onto the floor. Place the cache can slowly moving it down further until you have no over flow. Overall, great product!!!

Got this skimmer for Christmas! As soon as I turned it on it went crazy because I just upgraded and decided I really need a skimmer. Went from a 10 G to a 20L and have this on my 20L, it pulled decent yellowish/greenish skimmate as soon as I turned it on. Compared to the 10, the fish tank is lightly stocked (pair of clowns, six line wrasse, cleaner shrimp) and basically did a 50% water change when adding this skimmer. It is very quiet and still in the break in period so I hope the skimmate gets dark as said. I gave it 5 stars because it was easily assembled although the directions weren't that helpful but its well built and QUIET.

Works great. Just let it break-in and fine tune it. Easy, easy, easy. Performs great and super quiet.

I'll save you hours of research. This is a well built, relatively quiet skimmer. I was looking for a skimmer for my 50 gal breeder and I'm very happy with Reef Octopus's products. My only regret is not going with the 1000 or 2000, mostly because of the external mounted pump and 50 gallons seems to be the biggest tank I would put this on.
Overall, a great product that does what it says.
Awesome Skimmer! By Adam on 3/28/2014

A great skimmer for someone who is still new to the hobby. I've only been keeping saltwater tanks for a little over a year and this is one of my best purchases, next to an RO/DI system. It took a little over 48 hours for it to break in and start producing a light skimmate. After a week I had some nice, dark skimmate being pulled from my tank.
The only negatives to this skimmer are the directions and the in tank pump. Youtube quickly solved the directions problem and the in tank pump does take up some room in my 29gal tank, but the way the pump is set up it skims the top of my water which I really like! The only other downfall is the open side of the skimmer leading to the return. This just adds a little more to the salt creep and evaporation - but that's what top off RO/DI water is always for.
Even with the few downfalls I still give this skimmer a 5/5 because of the quality build of the skimmer and how it functions so quietly. My old Coralife super skimmer was extremely loud and this skimmer is the complete opposite.
My first real skimmer By N. Clark on 3/8/2014

After spending quite a few months researching skimmers for my new 45gal tank it came down to two models; the Reef Octopus and the Aquamaxx. After talking to some people on a few reefer forums, seeing a huge one up close at my local zoo, and chatting with a few LFS employees I ended up with this one. It was pretty easy to put together even though the instructions are a little useless.
Once I got her up and running she started pulling things out of the water right away. I was having to empty the cup two-three times a day for the first few days. Now that its been about a week or so it's down to every other day or so.
It's a very quiet skimmer. Just a little bit of noise when it first starts up. I think my Marineland filter makes a racket compaired to it.
All in all though I am very happy with it!

I'm very pleased with this skimmer. It's well built, works well, and is quiet as a mouse. It comes mostly put together, just look at the diagram to complete the assembly. There is no priming of the pump, no bubbles in the tank, or any surprises involved. Just plug and play.
The only negative is the supposed "surface skimmer" intake is too short to reach the surface (for me). I think there have been several versions of this skimmer and they add small improvements with each version.

The directions suck, the skimmer works great , if I were to do it again I would get the BH1000 model instead because it has the pump outside of the tank. I knew this when I got it but was in a hurry. My water is crystal clear in a 40 gallon breeder tank with a Greenspotted pufferfish.

I've had this skimmer for about 4 years, and it's still working great. Only complaint is that the rubber band holding the collection cup in place will wear out eventually and you'll have to replace it, but that's not a big deal compared to the great value of this product.

This product works great! Simple installation, very quite, and does a great job skimming. I have a 36-gallon bow and this does take up more space than I'd like it to. I'm new to the hobby and if I were to do it all over again, I'd go with a sump and in-sump skimmer, but it works great for what I have!

This unit is really solid. Came in nice secure packaging.
It's still breaking in so I can't comment on it's true potential but it seems very promising.
One thing to watch for are the instructions. Pretty well useless on how to operate and set correctly.

I am a beginner aquarist started putting together a saltwater a couple months ago. Looked around many places trying to figure out which skimmer worked best for my 50 gallon hexagon shaped tank, decided to go with the reef octopus bh100. Instructions where difficult to read and put together because images on sheet are not updated since they replaced the pump, but don't need to be a rocket science to figure out. After only a few minutes I could see the skimmer working, cleaning and clearing my tank making it crystal clear and not to mention how silent it is you cant even hear it during the day barely at night. The maintenance is incredibly easy. After all I love this product, could not have picked a better choice.

So, the directions kind of suck but if you are okay with reading schematics you can figure it out pretty easy. I had a little issue with it being loud at first but turns out I had the air inlet hose on the wrong prong of the silencer. I moved it to the side without the stem on the inside and it got dead quiet. After having it on my tank for 12 hrs I was producing light skimmate. It hasn't fully broken in yet but I am pretty confident when it does it will give me some dark stuff and really help my tank out. Plus the thing looks awesome, its sleek and not bulky. The only downside is the big old pump and inlet tube that is kind of ugly in the display, but you can't ask for much better from a HOB piece of equipment. I am officially a Reef Octupus fan.

I got this skimmer to replace the one I bought beforehand that was terrible with bubbles and leaked, I think it was a corallife one and man what a piece of crap. So glad I got this one. Instructions were kind of bland but thank goodness good pictures plus you can research you tube to put it together. It works great and not very loud at all. Pulls out junk and I have the catch basin chamber sitting at 3 to 2.75in inside the main chamber and seems to be my sweet spot for mostly a dry skim. I last a week before I need to just go ahead and clean the basin out under the sink and replace it back and good to go.
Great skimmer, sucky directions By Tom on 9/4/2013

So the skimmer if quick to set up, looks great and works really well. The problem is that the directions are awful, in fact the directions that I have are for a different style of the BH-100 skimmer. This caused a great deal of confusion in the set up. If it was not for this I would easly give it 5 stars
Great skimmer! By Kevin on 8/31/2013

This product deserves five stars but I only gave it four. The directions that are provided are horrible! It's pretty self explanatory on how to we true unit up and it took me all of 5 minutes to have it in my tank and plugged in but I repeat, worst directions I've ever seen. It's a 2 page stapled packet. This unit is large, high quality plastic and skins wonderful! Within the first 3-5 minutes of it in my tank it was skimming green and brown liquid! The pump is an eyesore but on my 46G bow its unnoticeable. This is the first Reef Octopus product I have ever owned and I will be a regular purchaser of their products again in the future. And last but not least, BRS is the greatest company ever!

Very well constructed skimmer for the price. I was surprised on how fast it started producing skimmate.. The only downside to this skimmer is if you have a nano tank the pump is kind of an eyesore.

Got this skimmer to replace a coralife. Its much more eye pleasing without the pump inside the tank. instructions were poor but got it figured out pretty quick, there are lots of vidios on youtube. Lots less noise than the old one for sure and have had no problems with it
Works Great! But, pump is large and sits inside tank By Cheryl R. on 10/20/2012

The BH-100 is a great HOB skimmer and priced well also. It quickly began removing skimmate from my reef tank and my water quality has dramatically improved. The only downside of the BH-100 is the pump is VERY large and sits "inside" the tank, so it takes up a lot of room and is kind of an eyesore, however, you get used to it over time and given it works so well, is priced right and makes zero noise, it is a great value.

the skimmer works good but i think it must be sensitive to getting it tuned in for my 30 gallon because i can't get consistent skimming with it but it is very well built for a hang on skimmer
Excellent HOB skimmer. Much better than others on the market that I have seen. My only complaint was the lack of any literature in the box besides a diagram of how it should be assembled. By Zak on 9/13/2012

Great product at a great price. Perfect for those that are just getting into the hobby and even those that have been doing this a while and just don't want an in-sump setup. Would definitely purchase again if I could go back and do it over.

This was the second skimmer that I have tried on my tank, it turned out to be far superior to the one I got at my local fish store. Has some fine bubbles but as it has broken in and I have fine tuned the cup on the back it does well. I really like this skimmer, keep my tank looking great!

I have just started using this protein skimmer and it seems to be working great. At the very beginning when assembling it, i had a bit of trouble with the air intake silencer. Got a bit confused???Still, this is a great starter skimmer and really pulls in the gunk and stuff!

Skimmer is very well constructed, very sturdy and build well. It is being used on a 55 gallon reef tank. I finally have it dialed in pulls great skimmate.
I didn't realize how big the pump on this thing is, really is an eye sore in the tank and there is no fine tuning of the air intake to adjust the level of bubbles, you have to move the skimmer cup up and down, it comes with a rubber gasket wrapped around the outside to "hold" the current level which you had it last time. But once you find that sweet spot it really pulls some gunk.

This is overkill for my 20 gallon but I bought this for when I get a bigger tank. Really easy to set up. Started to clean my water right away. I’ve had it about 2 weeks now and all the micro bubbles are gone and it seems quitter. Easy to clean as well. Works great for my tank.

I have been using this skimmer for a few months on a 29g Mantis tank. It works great 90% of the time. The problems starts when my Peacock Mantis reorganizes the whole tank before molting. So every few month she moves most of the sand and some gets in the skimmer. My only problem with the skimmer is that i have to take it apart and clean it way too often. In a regular tank people will probably not have this problem!
