These work, within limits By Garyinco on 3/6/2014Garyinco would recommend this product to a friendI've had one of these for about 4 years. It works on a small body of water. I don't use it anymore, I don't have a need.
But it does work. I had it on a 24g aquacube running 150w of MH. I figure I had about 18 net gallons of water. It would pull down my temp by about 3-4 degrees.
It fit nicely down into the rear sump-like section of the cube. Pics always show these things upside down. It wont add much cooling quickly but over time it will drop the temp. It comes with a temp probe to feed down into your water, at least mine did. The ventilation fan on mine was silent.
It looks like they have redesigned the wiring and power supply which is a good thing. I never cared for the multiple connectors and clunky terminal box mine had. If you only need to drop your temp a few degrees these are worth checking out.
Nice little chiller for nano reef By Raysun on 3/6/2014Raysun would recommend this product to a friendMy 17 gallon nano reef is in a room that can get very warm in the afternoon, requiring a chiller to keep the temperature in check. I have been using an Iceprobe for a about 18 months and it does the job quietly and with no fuss. I have it suspended above the filter chamber for a no-holes installation. I use my Apex for temperature control. If used stand-alone, a temperature controller will need to be added. (There is one available from Iceprobe.)
My only quibble with the unit is the ceramic coating on the probe started eroding very soon after installation (even though I was very careful in handing the unit and did not scratch or nick the coating.) The part of the probe in the water is pretty much bare aluminum now. It doesn't affect the operation but it does put a big chunk of aluminum in contact with my aquarium water. I contacted the Iceprobe folks several times when the finish problem first arose, but never heard back from them.
The unit is simple to operate, which is good, because if my experience is any indication factory support is non-existent.
