I was using the DPD Total chlorine reagent colorimetric test in an attempt to accurately determine when my RO/DI pre-filter carbon blocks had been exhausted of their capacity to remove chlorine from the city water supply. Even after replacing my carbon block with three brand new carbon blocks used in series, the DPD total chlorine reagent produced a slight pink color. The color intensity appeared to be less than the limit of quantification for the test (<0.02 ppm), but it left me wondering if my results were not biased by my desire to see a low reading. The Free Chlorine HI701 Hanna Checker HC was simple to use. I found that my carbon blocks after three months of use (several thousand gallon of water passed through them), produced a result of 0 ppm – free chlorine. My only regret is that that this kit does not measure chloramine. If I could go back and do it again, I would have purchased the Total Chlorine Ultra Low Range HI761 checker (0-500 ppb total chlorine).
