  • Best HOB skimmer I have tried By on 12/6/2016

I generally don't like HOB skimmers and prefer in-sump designs...but this unit is tough to complain about IMO. I'm running this on a 65 gallon reef for about 6 months now and it has been absolutely no trouble (no crazy noises, no leaks/spills, etc.) and collects a lot of skimmate.

It's a bit finicky with the adjustment when new (like many skimmers), but after a few weeks it really settled down and became very consistent. I originally planned to plumb the fitting on the collection cup to a drain or large container to protect against overflows, but the skimmer has proved so consistent and reliable I have not bothered. As with many skimmers...large water changes or certain foods (chunks of fresh seafood for the anemone for example) can make it go a bit nuts temporarily so I just open the adjustment pipe beforehand and then close it down again a few hours later once things have had a chance to settle back down.

Also (as with any HOB I have used) adjustment will be a bit sensitive to your tank water level so best to have an ATO system that keeps your tank water level consistent.
  • Works well. Wish it came in Red. By on 10/19/2016

From a functionality stand point this skims perfectly and doesn't create micro bubbles. It is not silent, but by no means is it "noisy".

Set up is easy. Pulls water from the surface which is a great design. Sponges keep the microbubbles away. You can run a hose from the collection cup into a bucket - all skimmers need this.

Improvements? I wanted it to have red accents like most Reef Octopus skimmers. Wish the black sponges looked a little better.
  • Great skimmer once you get it going By on 6/23/2016

This skimmer is really great just like the rest of the reviews say. Cleans very well once you get it going. Every video and even the instructions state to pinch the air line then plug it in to get it going and then once all the air is out let it go and poof the thing works....well I found a better way that worked for me, take the line and close it off with the top of your thumb while holing the line horizontal while you fill the chamber. This way the line fills as you fill the chamber, no air. Turn it on and you can pretty much let it go and the skimmer is off to the races doing what it does best.

For reference this is my first skimmer/saltwater setup and so far love it!
  • A solid choice By on 6/4/2016

It does take some adjusting to get it dialed in to the proper levels for air and water, but within a day it was pulling out some serious gunk. It's also quieter than the fans on my LED lights.
  • the worse spent money By on 3/28/2016

too complicated to adjust, super unstable, overflow problems, exes micro bubbles if you try to havea little wet skimmate.. brings a hole in the top of the elbo 90 degree return that splashing all around, if you replace the sock gets out a lot of bubbles and takes days to start to get something ... very bad !!!! if you want to be happy, stay away from this piece of junk
  • Hands down, best HOB on the market By on 3/17/2016

I was running a Reef Octopus 1000 classic on my wife's seahorse tank, and it just wasn't pulling a lot of skimmate out. Swapped it out with this bad boy, and I'm emptying the cup every 3 days or so. Super job at keeping nitrates down in the tank, right around 5 ppm or so. Anyone who knows how difficult that is for a seahorse tank should be VERY impressed with how well this skimmer functions.
  • This thing is better than free ice cream By on 11/24/2015

My 65 gallon was mucky. This very quiet and extremely efficient skimmer picks up the darkest skim crud ever. Collect them all!!!
  • Excellent By on 8/30/2015

Replaced my Remora HOB with this beast. I am battling an outbreak of hair algae that will not subside despite all the measures I have tried. Decided to replace my skimmer.
Absolutely love the amount of skimmate produced. The break in period was literally 4 days. The skimmer is quieter than my prior skimmer. I ran both skimmers for 1 week just to compare. This out performed the Remora 5:1. Definitely recommend.
  • great skimmer By on 8/22/2015

!st hob skimmer - worked great from the start
  • Works well By on 7/13/2015

This skimmer works pretty well. As it's my first and only skimmer, I have nothing to compare it to, so.... I'm giving it a 5 because it does pull out crud from the water without making a lot of noise.. It only took about 3 days to break in. If I set it just right, I get dark skimmate. If I set it just a hair either way I get slightly tinted water or nothing but crud inside the cone. I'm running this in a 55 FOWLR with 6 fish. I think it would pull out more crud if I took my aquaclear 70 offline.
