Works ok but... By ChuckD76 on 8/17/2014ChuckD76 would recommend this product to a friendThis is my first skimmer and I've been using it for a few weeks now.
As others have said , Reef Octopus should have just saved the trees and not even included instructions if they were going to be as useless as the ones included. A few YouTube videos later and some careful squinting at the box and I figured it out though.
One of the videos I watched was a general dialing in a skimmer video and from that I just set this one to where the top of the bubbles are just at where the collection cup attaches. By leaving it there the skimmer acts as a water level indicator for the tank and I just top off as needed.
Skimmate has been a nice dark green/brown wirh a couple good chunks and a funky smell so I'm happy. Also, I've seen a slight reversal of some STN on a Montipora digitata since installing the skimmer.
That being said, there is some bad:
I have this on a pico reef, ~5 gallons, and for an in tank installation, for a tank this small, this skimmer is larger than I'd like it to be.
Also, as others have noted, microbubbles are an issue so unless you can stick this in a sump or a HOB filter/refugium I'd seriously think about purchasing it. I did try a piece of filter floss as a bubble trap but over a short period of time the collection cup would flood so I gave up and just live with the bubbles for now.
And finally, this skimmer is loud. Save yourself the headache and get a pill bottle and some spare airline tubing to make a silencer (thanks again, YouTube).
Other than those few issues, this is turning into a nice little skimmer and I would definitly consider one if I had a sump to stick it in or was planning a custom AIO build and was making my own rear chamber.
OK for the money By Tom on 6/24/2014Tom would recommend this product to a friendI bought this skimmer for my QT. The instructions are vague but if you have a general understanding of how a skimmer works, you should be ok.
As for function: Maintaining water level is crucial if you want any type of consistency. The collection cup is very small so a skimate collection container should be considered. It will create micro bubbles so you may want to consider some type of bubble trap. But to solve all of these issues, I set the skimmer in hob refugium and once it broke in, besides emptying the collection container once a week. I didn't have any issues.
Overall terrible By Zak on 3/10/2014Zak wouldn't recommend this product to a friendSo i bought this for my IM tank and all i have had are problems. The air valve constantly clogs and some times air just stops flowing through i had a 100% better experience with an oceanic biocube skimmer; if you don't know about it, its the worlds tiniest skimmer powered by an air pump. Do Not get this product!
Great for a small Tank By Den on 1/24/2014Den would recommend this product to a friendI have this on my 10g I use as a frag tank. Started pulling skimmate almost immediately. Would have been 5 stars if it weren't for the directions that came with the unit. Pretty much useless. Had to find a you tube video to check how to set it up.
Good skimmer for small tank. By Geoff S. on 12/17/2013Geoff S. would recommend this product to a friendWithin just a few hours it was pulling dark smimmate from my tank. I am using it on a 36 gallon bowfront which is larger thsn the recommended max tank size but I couldn't pass up on the price of it. I have been running it for almost 2 weeks at this point. It was a little tough to setup as the instructions were extremely vague but I got it figured out. It seems a bit overly sensitive to the water height - I am using it as a hob on my display tank. The size is just right to not be overly obtrusive in the tank yet not too small to be ineffective.
