  • An excellent way to join 3 hydra lights to a 6 foot tank By Ash on 8/20/2014

I put these in with 3 hydra 52's (3 18 inch rails) which worked perfectly for the spacing in my tank. I have a bowfront and it places the lights in perfect distance from eachother over the top of the tank.

The rails are lightweight and solid. Make sure that if you use the 18 inch rails with 3 lights that your supporting it with the hanging kit from both ends, and not just the middle as the rails will slightly bow.
  • They work - but beware of a few things! Actual dimensions for one.. By Sean on 5/30/2014

Generally speaking the fit into the channels on the top of my Vega fixtures is very good, a neat mounting solution. Two set screws per end to tighten down on the heatsink make it feel like a secure hold, and inspires confidence. Includes allen wrench to do this, and they go together rapidly. (Oddly, the 12-inch I ordered did not have the allen wrench, but the two 16 inch ones did). They are aluminum and seem to aid in heat dissipation by virtue of connecting to the heatsink and adding to heat dissipation area.

    Some Problem Areas:

Cost - Though these exude quality, I think the price on these sections of aluminum are a bit on the high side.

First and foremost - advertised length - DOES NOT correspond to the spacing you will receive between fixtures. For example, I bought the 12-inch supposing I would get 12 inches between fixtures, enough to position the two fixtures far enough apart that none of the LEDs would be going through the large, not-transparent, glass center brace of my Oceanic RR tank. Count on losing 2-2.5" PER END when properly mounted per manufacture instruction. So the distance will be 4-5" LESS than you are expecting. I would suspect the 6-inch would put two fixtures fairly close to butting together. This was of particular trouble to me because I was aiming to mount the ends of the resulting assembly in my canopy.

Second - building on the previous point, KNOW what you are ordering and what the net length will wind up being. Once you know that, start over and do it again. Getting this wrong will cost you. BRS' policies will not allow return of opened or used items, so you are not able to return these once you open and "dry fit" them and realize there may be an issue with your overall plans vs. what the actual yield in length. I try to be loyal to BRS, but return policies on certain things (like this) become costly. Obviously 90% of stuff you know what you are ordering (sediment/carbon/RO membranes), and returning is never a problem since it's hard to get that wrong. But on items and situations like this, it becomes a lot of money that isn't refundable, quickly.

Third - there should be something in description stating net distance between the two fixtures linked by the various lengths.
  • These are sweet. By Doug on 3/9/2014

These EXT rails are sweet. They're totally solid and are the best way to secure your A.I. lights. You can connect your lights together or saw these to fit, drill holes and screw them into your hood. They're aluminum so they won't corrode.
  • Dont bother with anything else By Bill K on 7/2/2013

  • Easy to install By Ryan on 4/9/2013

Love the look of two lights joined with this Ext Rail. Very easy to install and comes with the tool.
  • Sleek Design By Brandon on 4/5/2013

These EXT Rails feel very strong and sturdy. They maintain the clean sleek appearance of the AI light fixture. The option to easily adjust the distance between lights without having to re-hang everything is a great for expanding your system.
