Was using a flare on my original setup, but I opted for the round nozzle off a Y fitting. This allowed much more control to help eliminate dead zones and hopefully stop so of that annoying algae. Was hard to fit together but a little heat and they slid right in place. Just make sure of your sizes. I got this Y and actually needed the 3/4" - 1/2" adapter.

We bought a tank with overflows but no pipes. BRS had the best prices i could find for loc line pieces to build our returns.

I'm using the Y in each of the overflows in my AGA 120. I would recommend buying the pliers since they snap together hard.

I used two of these, to spread the flow around some, in my 120 gallon reef, and it workes great! It is better to have flow form multiole directions, in a reef tank, and this definately helps.
