BR-140 biopellet reactor.....excellent! By TYRUS on 9/3/12
TYRUS would recommend this product to a friendThis combo pack is great. I 'm currently running this reactor with the Mag drive 7 pump. It works like a champ. The reactor is well made and overall performance is excellent. -

Good By dtawahn on 5/7/12
dtawahn would recommend this product to a friendThis has been working great since setup. However, when setting up, if one tiny little pellet gets stuck in the lid, it will not seal and a watery mess is made. Make sure when you setup and add pellets, that the lid is completely clear. There is no room for error. -
Well built and very cool looking product! (BR-70) By PT on 3/10/12
PT would recommend this product to a friendI added this shortly after I started on cycling my 24" cube, not sure but it might have helped my cycle time (around 10 days with dry rock). I did add some starting cultures from Microbacter7 and the hagen cycling product. The product is certainly well made and would definitely buy again. Consider getting this at the start too as you wont have to care about dealing with effects on the tank later. Consider putting a ball valve on the input as its nice to turn it off and on to break up the pellet clumping at the beginning. Im running this and the BRS Carbon reactor with a mag 3 and seems to have enough flow to keep both running.
One thing to keep in mind is to make sure you plumb correctly as the sch 80 union fittings dont seem to match what you can get in local stores .. I ended up making a mistake and having to wait for a replacement on the union. -
Worth it! By 808Reefer on 12/27/11
808Reefer would recommend this product to a friendit costs a little more than some reactors, but I'm very impressed with this reactor. It is very well built, pretty much comes fully assembled. Great product overall. -
I like this set up By walkabout on 11/23/11
walkabout would recommend this product to a friendI got this about 11 months ago the BR-110 works really well, pellets are a little high in price but what can you do, when something works this good, i am back for more pellets -
BR-70 Combo By Mark Neil on 11/7/11
Mark Neil would recommend this product to a friendI've purchased this combo and have been using it for a few weeks (100g tank). I've noticed my sand getting clearer and better skimmer performance. I used about 200ml of pellet out of the 500ml pack. I think this should be more than enough for 100 gallon. -
ro rx w pellets By William on 11/1/11

Excellent product. Just be careful By Robert on 9/16/11
Robert would recommend this product to a friendFirst let me say that the ease of the setup for this product was fantastic. i did it in about 20 minutes. Absolutely perfect fittings and I did install it with a Mag 3 pump which is almost overkill. The system works beautifully. That said where you will want to be careful is in the implementation of the biopellets. I made a few mistakes and it cost me. I did not rinse the pellets off before running the reactor. There was a nitrate spike of 80 ppm which i think may be responsible for me losing 3 of my acroporas and some of my frogspawn are showing polyp bailout. I noticed that there was clumping at the top of the reactor. I had a layer of biopellets stuck together. Just a week after dislodging the clumps, my nitrates are back down to 0 (It has been about 2 months). The damage in my tank has been done. I would recommend keeping an eye on these things as you set your system up. Even starting with half the recommended dose and then bumping it up after the first couple of months would seem to be a good cautious approach, in my opinion. At this time, the biopellets are definitely doing a great job of keeping the nitrates down to 0. -

Quality Reactor By Matt on 3/21/11
Matt would recommend this product to a friendWhile it's not the cheapest reactor that can be used with bio-pellets Reef Octopus certainly makes a quality piece of equipment. I've been extremely impressed with the thought in design and quality in build of this reactor.

I'm contemplating installing a reactor to help bring down nitrate levels, but the space next to my sump is virtually pitch black inside my stand. Do the bacteria in the reactor require any light to do their job, or will they work just as well in the dark?
Bulk Reef Supply Hey Martin,
Great question. They do not require light so nothing to worry about there! -
by mark short on April 4, 2013, @8:10 AM
wondering what size to buy, I have a 120gal / 33gal sump alot of rocks. maybe 110gallons of water heavey fish load with corals. currently changing 15% every 10 days to stay below 30ppm nitrate
Bulk Reef Supply Hey Mark,
A typical dose for bio-pellets is 250mL for every 50g of water you have. Yours comes out to about 150g so thats 750mL of pellets. The BR-110 would be a great choice in your situation and has a little room to spare. -
by J0hn on January 20, 2013, @9:31 PM
I'm having trouble with Nitrates on my 5 year old Solana 35 gallon tank. I wanted to add a bio reactor to help reduce the overall level of nitrates currrently around 80ppm. Which one would you recommend for a tank and setup like mine.
Thank you.
JohnBulk Reef Supply Hey John,
First I would suggest doing a couple of large water changes back to back to get them to a more reasonable level before adding any other media like biopellets. With the tank being relatively small water changes shouldnt be to bad. If you could do a 50% water change 3 times in a week, you would likely see that number drop down closer to 10-20. To implement biopellets on your tank there are a few options. For something that hangs on the back, I would suggest going with something like the TLF Phosban reactor with the sponges replaced with their NPX screens. Its a decent size reactor for your size aquarium. For something that has a bracket that can be mounted to a wall or stand, then I would go with the BRS Biopellet reactor. I will link all below.

BRS biopellets are made from 100% natural Polyhydroxyalkanoates. PHA is a natural substance produced by bacteria to store carbon and energy which makes it the ideal solid carbon source for denitrifying bacteria in the aquarium. BRS biopellets are produced by a leader in the industry, designed specifically for denitrification in aquaria and we believe it to be the best product available. Use of biopellets will also remove phosphates, combined with wise food selections it can be the only type of phosphate control required.
We recommend 1 cup (236 ml) of BRS biopellets per 50 gallons of system volume.
Solid carbon dosing (biopellets) has recently become an extremely popular method of removing nitrates from the aquarium. The exact method of denitration can be different for each tank but it mainly consists of a few things:
- Nitrate laden Bacteria is removed via the protein skimmer
- Bacteria directly converts nitrite into nitrous oxide so nitrate is never produced
- Bacteria consumes nitrates and processes them down into nitrogen gas
- Nitrate laden Bacteria is consumed by tank inhabitants like corals and sponges
Depending on the system it should take 4-8 weeks for the bacteria population to multiply and begin its work on your nitrates. Once you have the reactor going we suggest not making any adjustments for 8 weeks. Give the media and bacteria time to adjust to the parameters found in your tank and begin working. The absolute best advice we can give with this system is to set it up and forget about it for two months. Unless something is obviously not right resist all temptation to make any changes until the two months are up.
