What is the air valve for on hob reef octopus Skimmer 1000
Question by: Joey Gillette on May 8, 2016 12:07:00 AM
Great question!
The Air Valve will be for adjusting the amount of air into the skimmer to adjust the amount and shape of the bubbles. this can help to reduce overfilling and keep a solid skimmate production.

Does my tank have to be a certain height for this skimmer to work properly?
Question by: Santiago on Feb 7, 2016 10:33:00 AM
Great question!
Ideally the tank should be around 17" high or higher for this to work well without hanging off the back to the bottom. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Would this work in an aquarium with about 2" wide rim around the top? Thank you.
Question by: Mo on Apr 25, 2017 10:45:00 PM
Hey there,
Unfortunately that will be too thick to work with this skimmer. The classic 1000 will work with rimmed aquariums with a rim thickness of up to 1.125".

Happy reefing!
Answer by: Zack (Admin) on Apr 28, 2017 11:01:00 AM
Hi, I was wondering how high this sits above the rim of the aquarium. I have a slight clearance issue, and am wondering how much space I need to get the waste cup off. Thank you very much.
Question by: Len on Mar 30, 2016 8:46:00 PM
Great question!
This skimmer will need 5" above the rim of the tank. ideally 6" is nice to have to remove the collection cup and skimmer removal. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Apr 4, 2016 10:38:00 AM
I have a shallow tank which is 13 " hight, is this possible to hang on the back?, i dont mind if it hang off exceed the bottom of the tank. But will the skimmer work and funtion properly?
Question by: tommy on Jul 16, 2016 6:55:00 PM
Hi Tommy,
The skimmer can hang off the back of your tank, and even if it physically sits lower than your tank that is fine. Ultimately the drain for the skimmer just needs to be able to freely drain back into the tank.
Thanks for the question and if you have any more, let us know.
Answer by: Charlie (Admin) on Jul 18, 2016 9:58:00 AM
How much clearance do I need between the tank and the wall?
Question by: Matt on Dec 12, 2016 10:17:00 AM
Great question! You will need to account for 3.5" - 4" of clearance for proper installation of this skimmer. :-)

Is it ok to place a media bag in the return side of the skimmer, or is it not enough flow to go threw the bag?
Question by: Brandon on Aug 1, 2014 12:20:00 PM
Hi Brandon,
I personally wouldn't put a filter sock on the skimmer itself. The main concern is that if the filter sock clogs up and reduces the output a little bit it could cause your skimmer cup to overflow all over the floor :(

  • verry good skimmer By William1 on 2/8/2017

Bought this skimmer 10 months ago. Does a very good job taking waste out. My only issue was the impeller shaft was broke when I went to clean the pump out, but Reef Octopus did a great job getting me a replacement one very quick under the warrant.
  • So far, it's worked well; Issues on install By Ivan on 5/20/2016

I've had this skimmer for around a month now and it's performed as advertised, producing good skimmate. However, the intake tube is a bit longer than it should for a hob skimmer, unless the water level on your tank is pretty low, so it will not sit at the precise level to skim the surface unless you cut it a few inches. It is also a bit noisy (I can always hear it in the background noise of my living room). Finally, if you decide to buy it, when you install it, check all the tube connections to ensure they are sealed tight. The intake tube comes preassembled to tha skimmer body out of the box, so I didn't try to tighten it more. However, when I finished assembling the skimmer and turned it on, it started to leak through the connection between the body of the skimmer and the intake tube and made a mess in my floor. After completely disassembling it and tightening all of the tubes, I've had no leak issues.
  • Good Skimmer/but not what is pictured By Thebobs72 on 11/1/2015

The skimmer I received looks nothing like the picture here other then the body and the silencer.. This skimmer did go together very easy, I took one look at the instructions and laugh a little just put the thing together. It was skimming junk out of my tank within hours. Only problem I am having is bubbles coming out of the skimmer but this should get better over time.. I have seen many videos on YouTube about this skimmer. I sure would like to know what is the adjustable air valve for. All the skimmers I have seen set up only use the silencer..
  • Works very well By Melody on 3/29/2015

This skimmer is huge! I was worried about the weight on the tank, but so far so good. It cleans my tank well, but if I don't clean it, it smells! They may be due to the raw shrimp I feed my sea star. The piece that holds onto the tank arived broken, but I contacted the company and they sent me a replacement quickly.
  • WOW By Peter on 2/19/2015

Although the instructions are not very good you get enough info from the picture. Mine has been running for 2 days. It's already pulling stuff out. It's quiet, and not very noticeable.
  • Good Quality HOB Skimmer By Adam on 1/20/2015

I bought this for my 55g reef tank. It worked quite well, and was very effective and quiet given its small footprint. I eventually had to replace this skimmer with the BH-2000 when I began carbon dosing as the increased load was causing it to overflow out through the top and onto the floor.
  • Not for me By dannysreeftank on 1/11/2015

Ordered this product because i have another tank with a sump running an internal reef octopus 110 nw, but didnt have the same experience with this one. I had two leaks on test run both due to the horrible directions that come with this product as you need to make sure all 3 o-rings are properly sealed. Next, i had it setup which seemed like would be a high quality product due to the materials that it was made out of, but could never get the product to work properly and had a over flow issue. The overflow issue is what made me decide to return the product as I felt it wasn't as safe as a internal skimmmer which would overflow in the tank vs the ground. I am currently in the process of returning with bulk reef supply after spending 30 dollars to ship back we shall see. So in short don't waste your money on this product its not worth the 3-4 hours of frustration,
  • coralvue has bad customer service By William on 12/30/2014

The pump only lasted 6 months, dont waste your money.
  • good deal By Claude on 12/15/2014

Works great on my 40 reef. Nice and quiet.
  • Good skimmer. By Crash on 12/13/2014

Intake basket at it's highest was still way under water.Had to cut couple of inches off intake pipe to get basket up to skim surface. Collection cup is super tight fit. Very quiet pump. Overall = Me Like !
  • Good stuff By Crash on 12/12/2014

I'm stuck in apartment and sump is impossible . I've owned Remora HOBs on my older small tanks but I like this better because pump is outside tank and runs very quiet on my 90 FOWLR . The only adjusting needed was to cut the intake pipe so it would allow intake basket to be higher , at water level , Original position meant water level had to be 3 inches below rim . Original pipe is too long . Been in hobby since 86 and this is best HOB I've used .
  • Can't get much better for a Mid to Upper size "Nano" By Chris on 8/13/2014

Picked this up for my 29 gallon, choosing to go a few models up to keep the pump out of the tank and was glad I did. Great constriction, and clear so there is minimal visual impact. Super easy to set up even though mine was missing instructions. I wish there was more pipe lengths and suggestions for levels to put them at rather than trimming the existing ones, but a quick youtube search helps along with trial and error. Just make sure the return is high enough or you will get it to overflow on startup. After the setup, I was impressed how quickly if started to work. It was only a few days before it was pulling some really nasty gunk. Adjustments are wonderfully simple. One you have it dialed in there are little to no micro bubbles in the display, minor bubble spray, and a small piece of foam in the return pipe chamber further limits them. Quite quiet, just the minimal fizzing noise. I doubt I would be happier with ant other skimmer in the category.
