Quality Ballast By GLC on 11/17/12
GLC would recommend this product to a friendEasy to connect, easy to install, looks great on top of a canopy. This ballast is quiet and relatively cool thanks to the aluminum housing and cooling fins. Very nice unit. -
Great product By Quenton on 7/13/12
Quenton would recommend this product to a friendI love the size, weight and how quiet it runs nice COLOR TOO -
The best By illya on 2/23/12
illya would recommend this product to a friendWell worth the money on these, they are dead silent, nice 10% overdrive feature for that extra boost of brightness. They do get hot so best to mount them somewhere they wont be spilling heat into your tank or sump. i am running 400 watt 20k bulbs which also helped cure my baby of jaundice by sitting her under them about 7 feet away for short periods. -
Awesome!! By Don on 9/29/11
Don would recommend this product to a friendI bought 3 of these to replace my faulty Ice Cap units. I love the ability to upgrade almp wattage without having to buy a different ballast. They are running my 250wt radiums at the moment, but I may change to 400 wt radiums next time around. Did I mention that I won't have to buy new ballasts when I do? :-) -
Fantastic!! By Wayne on 11/10/10
Wayne would recommend this product to a friendCannot find a SINGLE flaw in this ballast! Build is top notch. Completely silent! Gets the most from my radium bulb! Only thing, if you want to use the dimming feature make SURE your bulb says it can be dimmed. The radium bulb I bought says "not dimmable". Good thing I didn't want to use the dimmer.

This works for powering one 250w mh right?
Bulk Reef Supply Hey Chris,
You would be correct! It has a dial on it that will allow you to use it for both 250w and 400w light bulbs. -

can you wire this to accomadate 2 bulbs if not do you have a ballast like that. also how do you determine the wattage that is required for your tank i assume depth of tank but i have never used halides.
thanks for your helpBulk Reef Supply Hey John,
The ballast will only run a single bulb. If you are running more than one bulb you would want to a ballast for each bulb.
Lighting requirements vary from tank to tank and coral to coral, but usually people use 250w bulbs for tanks 24" and shallower, and 400w bulbs for deeper tanks. They are usually spaced out with 1 to cover a 2ft by 2ft area.
- Compact design operates both single and double ended bulbs
- Completely silent - forget the hum/buzz of magnetic ballasts
- Ballasts come wired with the Sunlight Supply standard female lamp cord receptacle. Please note that every metal halide system / brand has different proprietary plugs. If your fixture cord is not from sunlight supply you may need to cut the cord to attach your systems plug.
- Weighs less than 10 pounds
- Cut-off circuitry - cut off when a short is detected. For ultimate safety
- Fast start-up - they reach full brightness quickly
- Microprocessor controlled to ensure proper performance with every bulb type
Electronic Ballast vs E-Ballast
The Lumatek ballast is an E-ballast, unlike other brands on the market, which are actually electronic ballasts. E-ballasts use a microprocessor similar to a component found in a personal computer. This microprocessor allows the E-ballast to run any bulb type, to switch between 50 and 60 hertz, to make adjustments for the type of bulb it is running, and even to compensate for degraded lamps by increasing its output. Electronic ballasts have a constant output and cannot make adjustments or changes. They will light a MH lamp; but quickly cause it to degrade, thus shortening the lamp's lifespan.
The Lumatek Ballast is the brightest ballast in the industry. Light meter readings indicate that the Lumatek ballast is up to 27% brighter than common core and coil magnetic ballasts. The Lumatek is 10-15% brighter than other brands of digital ballast on the market. Magnetic ballasts waste watts to convert the electricity, whereas Lumatek sends the FULL wattage to the bulb, lighting it to its fullest potential. The Lumatek achieves superior light meter readings in comparison with other digital ballasts on the market through using microprocessors to detect the precise type of lamp used and accordingly supply the correct power. Some lamps are able to use slightly more than wattage. The Lumatek ballast will detect this difference and increase output accordingly.
Lumatek ballasts are programmed to allow for a "soft start" and do not require an initial power surge to start the ballast. This allows end users to start multiple ballasts simultaneously without blowing a breaker. The ballast will also detect a short in the wiring or a defective lamp. It simply shuts itself off, letting the user know that something is wrong. If ballast keeps shutting down, this could indicate a problem with the output wiring.
