good ballast By Matt on 12/3/11
Matt would recommend this product to a friendThis ballast is very efficient with power for the output you get. Runs cool and doesn't buzz. The bulbs strike up nicely. I would consider these to be on par with Galaxy. You'll notice the quality straight out of the box. Not sure if it was good on the 250 phoenix bulbs I use, but I used the dimmer feature to acclimate my corals up to the hqi setting and it worked great. -
Good ballast By Christian on 9/25/11
Christian would recommend this product to a friendBallast doesn't run too hot and aren't as bulky(like my old magnetics). Overall great product. -
works great except... By Chris on 9/10/11
Chris would recommend this product to a friendThis ballast works fine and is small enough to not take up precious space under the tank. However I'm not real happy about how easy it would be for something to bump against the wattage dial and suddenly be driving my 250w bulb at 400w. Not sure what would happen but the wattage switch could have been designed smarter. Still, the ballast functions fine. -
Completely happy By Ralph on 8/6/11
Ralph would recommend this product to a friendI'm happy with the ballast. Gives me the option to to change my watt edge as I deemed fit. I used the 250 watt setting. I have no complaints. Just make sure you have the right pig tail. If not order it when you the ballast. -
Don't forget the lamp cord By TK on 1/6/11
TK would recommend this product to a friendIts a ballast. . . Seems to strike the bulb quickly and the bulb seems a little brighter (I am guessing anybody who spends $135 on a ballast wants to believe that).
Mine came with a (very) short pigtail for the lamp connection. If it had been longer I would have just cut the goofy connector off and hard wired it to the mogul base on my light fixutre. Given it's ~4" length, I opted for the lamp cord. I don't recall how much it was (<$20 as I recall) but I would plan on buying it.
Maybe the manuf got smart an now just includes it with the ballast.

Electronic Ballast vs E-Ballast
The Lumatek ballast is an E-ballast, unlike other brands on the market, which are actually electronic ballasts. E-ballasts use a microprocessor similar to a component found in a personal computer. This microprocessor allows the E-ballast to run any bulb type, to switch between 50 and 60 hertz, to make adjustments for the type of bulb it is running, and even to compensate for degraded lamps by increasing its output. Electronic ballasts have a constant output and cannot make adjustments or changes. They will light a MH lamp; but quickly cause it to degrade, thus shortening the lamp's lifespan.
The Lumatek Ballast is the brightest ballast in the industry. Light meter readings indicate that the Lumatek ballast is up to 27% brighter than common core and coil magnetic ballasts. The Lumatek is 10-15% brighter than other brands of digital ballast on the market. Magnetic ballasts waste watts to convert the electricity, whereas Lumatek sends the FULL wattage to the bulb, lighting it to its fullest potential. The Lumatek achieves superior light meter readings in comparison with other digital ballasts on the market through using microprocessors to detect the precise type of lamp used and accordingly supply the correct power. Some lamps are able to use slightly more than wattage. The Lumatek ballast will detect this difference and increase output accordingly.
Lumatek ballasts are programmed to allow for a "soft start" and do not require an initial power surge to start the ballast. This allows end users to start multiple ballasts simultaneously without blowing a breaker. The ballast will also detect a short in the wiring or a defective lamp. It simply shuts itself off, letting the user know that something is wrong. If ballast keeps shutting down, this could indicate a problem with the output wiring.
