  Do these make chatter sounds when they go on.

  They do. Any AC pump is going to do this because of the way the pumps operate. With AC current and pumps the pumps are actually going to start in reverse 50% of the time depending on which cycle they start on. If they start in reverse they bounce of a stopper until they get going in the right direction. This is the same reason why AC pumps should have the on/off cycles kept to a minimum as this is hard on the pump.
  
  The only way to get around this would be to us a DC controllable pump. These pumps work on DC current and always spin the same direction, and another benefit is that they can be sped up and slowed down as well. Examples of this would be the Ecotech Vortech pumps as well as the Tunze controllable pumps (like the 6105). Some pumps have the controllers built in (like the Ecotech) or may require a standalone controller (like the Tunze or Hydor Controllable).

  Will these powerheads attach to an acrylic tank manetically

  Great question. The hydor koralia's actually have a magnet that goes on both the inside of the tank (attached to the pump) and one that goes on the outside of teh tank. So they are connecting to the other magnet through the wall of the tank. As a result it works on both acrylic and glass tanks.
