Product Questions

Do you hav we to have an Apex to run this pump? I am planning on getting an Apex down the road but don't have one now.
Question by: Alex on Mar 2, 2016 12:28:00 PM
Hey there!
This pump does not require the Apex to run, only that the Apex can run programming fro the pump. The pump is still manually adjustable without the apex. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Mar 2, 2016 4:51:00 PM
I notice that a lot of DC controllers do not re-start the pump after a loss of power when the power is restored. That's OK for a skimmer, but not a main pump. Does the controller it comes with re-start the pump automatically after a power outage?
Question by: Reefdaddy on Mar 28, 2016 6:20:00 PM
Great question!
The DC return pumps will hold their original program when resetting and powering off. This means if the power turn off and back on the pump will go back to the same settings previously programmed. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Is this an in water or out of water pump?
Question by: RJ Balzen on Jan 16, 2016 11:11:00 AM
Great question!
This pump can be used both internally and externally. No need to worry about the difference. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Does this also come with the cable from the controller to the apex?
Question by: Donald Goldsworthy on Dec 1, 2015 1:47:00 PM
Great question!
This will not come with the connector cable, however it is a standard Ethernet or Cat5 Cable. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Dec 7, 2015 8:02:00 PM
Do these pumps add much heat to the tank as a byproduct of running? How do they compare to AC pumps in that regard? I'm looking for a powerful but cool pump so I won't have to run a chiller if possible.
Question by: Paul Ogle on Jan 29, 2016 1:32:00 PM
Great question!
All pumps will add some heat to the water column. They will be less heat than standard AC pumps and by far the least heat on the market. Ideally if you are able to run pumps externally it can save a little on the heat. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Dear BRS, please would you let me know the maximum length of cable I can use between the V1/V2 port on an Apex base unit and the Waveline driver? I would like to place the Waveline pump and it's controller in my basement to pump premixed salt water to my aquarium on the 1st floor (the Apex base unit is located close to the aquarium). Thanks in advance.
Question by: Russell Singleton on Jan 20, 2016 2:58:00 PM
Great question!
The cable between the Apex and the Wave line controller is any Cat 5 Ethernet cable that you can find in a correct length. It is an individual purchase and can be purchased in very long lengths from may electronic and hardware stores. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Jan 27, 2016 7:30:00 PM
What would the recommended return plumbing be for a DC 6000 going to a 1 1/2" bulkhead on the overflow? There will be a true union ball valve in between the pump and the bulkhead - placement of valve will be according to recommended configuration.
Question by: Alexander Harden on Jan 21, 2016 4:03:00 PM
Great question,
The easiest way will be to reduce the bulkhead down to 1" with the included fittings below. You can then connect the pump to the 1" reducer with the male pipe adapters. The valve can go anywhere on the line in between the reduced bulkhead and the pump. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

How to maintain Waveline DC pump
Waveline DC pumps are designed and built in module-pattern. In most of the circumstance, the controller and AC/DC adapter can be easily replaced or re-organized. For example, a DC6000 controller and DC10000II AC/DC adapter and DC4000 pump body can run together. Nevertheless, DC4000 AC/DC adapter can not run the DC6000/DC10000II/DC12000 pumps.
We recommend the users should check and clean the pump in very 6 months or even in shorter period.
Muddy fresh water;
Salt water;
Hard Water, high K-Value water, high minerals water;
Warm water below 35 degree C or tropical climate water

The maintenance will be simple, unscrew the pump volute and check if any stocks
in pump impeller and volute. Use fresh water to clean all parts. Pull out the Shaft
to check if any mud, sands on the surface and clean the shaft house inside with
acid detergent, like Tunze Citric Acid. Use fresh water to wash out the whole pump

  • Pump is ok, but you need a reliable power supply By Elisabeth on 6/26/2016

I also service reef aquariums (10 yrs) and have been a hobbyist for 27. I'd like to address the first review because there is a legitimate problem with the number of power supply failures (at least with the 6000 model) that I have experienced and have heard non-service/shop customers also experience. It has nothing to do with end user knowledge or application. I have never had one brand/model cause so much grief.

The OEM transformer brick is the issue and it can fail at any point. I've seen them fail at 3 months and one year. A non-OEM replacement on Amazon will cost you $15 and is probably worth just having in case this happens because the second issue which is infuriating is the poor customer service. I personally had to wait a week for a response and another 4 weeks for the part to arrive from China. A shop customer had the same problem prior to me and she was finally sent a replacement brick 2 months later after a dozen emails/calls and guess what? It was DOA. Now they won't even respond to her at all. She was lucky that I had a spare pump and let her borrow it for what is now going on 6 months. And I feel badly because I initially recommended this pump due to my brother's experience, but even his power supply failed after 10 months. So now my credibility has been tarnished a bit.

And there are other stories I could tell but all involve the power supply suddenly failing and then the non-existent/poor customer service. Overall, I do give this 3 stars because the pump in itself seems to be fine, but it loses one star for each of the other concerns. Again, if you do buy it then I'd immediately order a backup power supply and quite honestly I would probably get two and just throw the original away. I personally no longer trust it because of all the failure stories I have had to field and as soon as Apex releases the COR this pump will go into the depths of the garage as a backup. But I'm betting I'll probably just toss it one day because the experience has been a hassle and I feel burned by how much time was wasted and money was lost. If you service tanks, then you do not have time to repair equipment that has this type of failure rate and especially the heart of the life support system. Sorry Waveline, but you should have addressed the issue openingly. Quite honestly, I would have been fine buying a $15 replacement if it was shipped within 24 hrs of my claim.
  • Great Products! By OrcaB on 6/4/2016

I own an aquarium servicing business and have been using Waveline products exclusively the past 4 years. Not sure what all the complaints are about as we've had not one single issue! Currently we run 9 Skimmers and 6 DC return pumps on various systems and have not had a single issue with any of them. Sometimes I wonder how many of these complaints are user error. Quality product that I would have no problem recommending!
  • Good pump By Bescher on 5/31/2016

I have had this pump running two months now works great, easy to take apart
  • Awful By MItch on 4/19/2016

I purchased two DC2500 and one DC 6000 in October for a new setup. One of the DC2500 was put in the salt mix tank and the other on a closed loop line on the aquarium to run a carbon/GFO reactor. Both Failed. It appears that the housing swelled and the rotor became stuck... On both of them. Now my DC 6000 return pump is failing. DO NOT BUY WAVELINE!!! Now I am in a crunch to get a new return pump. Bulk Reef supply says they only carry quality items... If they mean that they will discontinue to carry this line of pumps.
  • Impeller seized in less than 6 months By Donald on 4/17/2016

I liked this pump at first. Easy to program on my Apex. Then while at work the pump quit on me. I can't get the impeller out to try and clean it and its locked in place. No response from customer support email. Thankfully I had an eheim pump on hand.
  • Good pump By N.Y.78 on 4/12/2016

As far as I can tell it is a decent pump the first one they sent me worked for a bout 18 hours then took a dump but as good as BRS is they sent me a new one overnighted it was here the next day and it has been up and running nonstop for a bout a little over a month now no complaints
  • stay awayyyy and be happy!!!!!! By johann garcia on 3/27/2016

the worse pump, the worse costumer service ....really bad cheap product, poor quality, noise and if you have a problem that surely it will, ...dont waste your time, put it in the trash and turn the page ... if you want quality please do not pass that I pass, save a little more money and you can go straigh with Ecotech marine , is as money but I guarantee the slightest problem you solve them in a second ... and it seeks Jebao jecod dct 6000, is the same, much better and less money..waveline is the worst brand and the worst company I have ever met in my life ... trust me, stay away from them and save yourself a heart attack
  • unreliable, no customer service, garbage. By mike on 2/23/2016

I have two of the DC6000 pumps for my returns. They have been running for about a year and the power supply has failed twice. Their customer service is unresponsive they don't answer their e-mails. Finally got through to them it took 2 months to get the replacement power supply. Do your self a favor don't buy this pump.

After taking advantage of black Friday bulk reef supply sale. I ordered the red sea reefer 450 along with a waveline dc 6000 pump. Mine broke 3 weeks later and there customer service is absolutely terrible. They have no live support, no phone # only a fax #. Very vague when it comes to helping you. Brochure in box is extremely basic and does not cover cleaning, maintenance etc.. It has been 2 days, and no response from waveline on my broken pump. The only way to reach them is via email or fax #. And there pumps are a joke. You will need to have 2 pumps(a backup) as you will need a reliable backup pump in the case one fails..like this waveline dc 6000. Very disappointed.
  • Great pump! By don_chuwish on 12/11/2015

The size and heft of it was a surprise to me since I've only ever had nano tanks before. First time getting such a big pump. Great quality feel. Don't have it running yet though so can't comment on control & noise.
