I have a 36 gallon with no sump (using CPR Aguafuge 2 HOB). Is it possible to mount this below the display and pump up to the main tank? I'm not sure what kind of suction/pressure this provides.

I have this temporarily mounted next to the display, but I'd like to clear up my 'install'.

I'd also like to start into 2 part with the 1.1ml versions and was wondering if I could do the same with them, mount them under the main display and pump up the 26-30 inches total (from stand to display via tubing).

    Bulk Reef Supply Hi Scott,
Its not a problem at all to mount the pumps below the tank. They will easily draw up a standard tank height and they will push up to 20ft of head pressure. It would be no problem with the 1.1mL models either!

what size of tubing does this pump use?

    Bulk Reef Supply Hi Greg,
The pump does come with plenty of tubing but if you needed more 1/4" tubing like 1/4" RO tubing works really well.

Hi, can i hook up this pump to my ro di low pressure tank? for auto top off.

    Bulk Reef Supply Hi William,
When you say low pressure tank, is it a pressurized tank at all, or is it what we would call an "atmospheric" tank like a barrel or bucket? The later would not be any issue at all.

Can this be used reliably with kalkwasser?

    Bulk Reef Supply Hi Philip,
It sure can. The peristaltic tubing is made from Santoprene which won't be bothered by the Kalkwasser.

Does the reservoir have to be above or below the pump/tank for this to work?

Bulk Reef Supply For this particular pump it doesn't matter as they won't create a siphon, though its always best practice to pump from a lower position to a higher position to make sure there isn't any risk of a siphon should something go wrong.

BRS Top Off Doser Specs

  • 20 ft max head
  • 50mL/min flow rate is ideal for most top off systems
  • Will not back siphon
  • Precision two roller design extends pump life
  • 12 month tube life (at 4 hours of use per day)
  • 12 month Bulk Reef Supply warranty on pump motor and head
  • Includes 17 ft of tubing, mounting bracket, and directions

BRS Top Off Dosers are intermittent duty pumps and not meant for continuous operation. We recommend on/off cycles under a few hours to maximize life span. This is a higher RPM motor than the BRS 2 Part Doser and may make a small amount of noise in operation but is much quieter than most dosing pumps in this flow rate range. Mounting the pump to the inside of a wooden stand will amplify sound.

  • Product is Good... Customer Service is Great! By PZCorp on 2/26/2015

This unit seems to do an overall good performance for the most part. Runs a little hot if used for too long of periods. I have 3 units and one did go down, but the staff help me trouble shoot then since it was under warranty they replaced the unit with no hassle. I am sooo thankful I found BRS a couple years ago. I first used them for the RO savings and now almost exclusively buy all my products from them. The learning videos also are a HUGE part of their great customer service!!
  • Great pump for kalkstirrers By Mike on 2/6/2015

I use this pump on my kalkstirrer. It is a solid, well built item that has never let me down. Precise amount dosed every time!
  • Grinding gears By Adam on 1/16/2015

OK so there are pro's and con's to these pumps. The do exactly what they are supposed to do, the water level in my tank is very stable. The only issue I have had is the first one I owned the gears stripped out in it. If it was not for BRS's awesome customer service I would be stuck with a $90 plastic block.

The second one has been running for a couple of weeks now and so far so good. If the gears are plastic then perhaps BRS should re-engineer these to have metal gears.

All in all though this is a good product and worth the money.
  • 1 a year? By Jason on 12/12/2014

Have my 2nd one of these just die on me again. Both lasted maybe a year. Gears are stripped.
  • Another failed pump By Kris on 11/15/2014

Used this pump for top off water in my ATO setup. Lasted 13 months, almost to the day. Like many other, the plastic gears in the drive stripped out. The way I have my ATO set up, this pump could run a maximum of 2 hours a day, and only for 10 minutes at a time every two hours. $90 for 1 year to operate under those conditions is pretty bad IMO.

When it was working, it could be quite noisy as well. That's not to say it always was, because every time it kicked on it was a surprise what kind of noise it would make. There were a few times where it was pretty quiet, though I stress few.

Gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because at least it made it a year. Sadly these days that seems to be an accomplishment for products.
  • Works good when it works.. By Mark on 8/18/2014

I bought two of these pumps for a future build I had coming up. After buying the new house, I started the build and installed these pumps Fed 2014. Used them for ATO since my RODI was in the basement. They worked great for that purpose. Now, one has already gone out. The gears stripped in it and the head no longer turns. So its only August 2014 and I didn't even get a year out of them but since I bought them over a year ago, Im past warranty. Warranty is not the issue, but paying 80 for a pump and only getting that long out of it when its only on maybe twice a day for 10 min at a time is not good. So I guess Im going to have to go a different way. The pump works good, never had an issue, its just the time you get out of it.. And after reading the reviews, Im not the only one with this problem.. So seems to be BRS might want to figure out what is up with the gears stripping out and fix it.. Just hope my second one on my other tank lasts long enough for me to come up with a better system..
  • Great for top offs By Brent on 8/16/2014

I bought this to suck from a 5 gallon RO/DI top off container and connected it to a timer to come on an intervals throughout the day. I have a HOT skimmer that requires a nearly constant water level to operate effectively, and this top off doser does that perfectly. I am very happy with this product. Please do be aware, though, that as the description stated, if you mount this inside of a cabinet (like I did), you can hear it when it is running.
  • Works great! By Brooks on 6/30/2014

Got product installed mounted without any issues. A bit slower than I expected but does the job flawlessly. Have it hooked up through a Apex IO Breakout box.
  • Great ATO pump By Moni on 6/26/2014

This pump has been a great ATO solution for me - the lack of siphon and ability to raise a good head let me put my reservoir in a closet, well away from my display tank. The previous aqua lifting pump I had used couldn't even get water raised from the floor into the tank, so I had to leave my ATO jug on a shelf or chair to give it a head start.

I've been using this for a month now with no problems.
  • Overall good so far By Justin on 4/29/2014

I bought the 50ml top off pump and won a pair of 1.1ml dosers so I am using all three for a couple months now. No complaints yet, a little noise but running in the basement offers no issues for me. I hope to get more than a year out of these otherwise I would have to agree with the others above. Limited lifetime doesn't sound too appealing but I like them so far.
  • don't buy. By mike d nyc on 3/19/2014

i bought this pump to push RO/DI from my reservoir through a kalk-stirrer. a peristaltic pump with a regular rate connected to a controller seems like a safer choice than relying on a variable rate of evaporation dictating when and how much kalkwasser is introduced into my system which would have been the scenario if i just piggybacked the kalk-stirrer onto my level-sensing ato. the reasonable price and italian-origin of the pump made it easy to pull the trigger. and since many people might be considering this setup, i'll offer my experience as a warning:

from the very beginning, the pump immediately made a moderate grinding noise when activated. within days, the noise had intensified some. i contacted BRS to ask if this was normal for this unit. the BRS rep asked if i'd been running the pump for extended periods of time... which i had not. he explained that this pump was meant to run for "30-40 minutes" at a clip. i'd never exceeded this runtime but after hearing this, i took note that the pump housing got very warm after a few minutes of use. the grinding noise continued to get worse and increased to the point where it was clearly audible over the other ambient sounds of my reef despite being buried inside a stand made of 3/4" plywood and lined with sound absorbing foam sheets. and so i arranged to exchange the pump for an identical replacement.

the replacement pump makes a very loud "clunk" sound whenever it activates, but does not have the grinding sound of its predecessor. the clunk, however, is sufficient to cause featherdusters and coco worms to retract, startle my fish, and annoy my wife. also, it being unadvisable to run this pump for more than 30-40 minutes without a cooldown period made it insufficient for my needs.

unfortunately, BRS says i'm past the 30-day return window and so i'm not eligible for a refund. i won't editorialize further except to say that despite being out $90, i'm going to throw this pump in the trash rather than risk using a product that doesn't do the job i require of it, and that i don't trust at all.

i'm always optimistic when a manufacturer resists the urge to bang out junk in a chinese sweatshop - and i'm happy to pay more for a better product made by skilled workers earning a fair wage - but this pump and its replacement were completely useless.
  • Awesome so fa By Reefercraze83 on 3/12/2014

This pump is working great so far. Minimal noise from gears. Much better than I was expecting from reading reviews prior to purchase. I use it as top off so it's precision does not need to be exact. But I love not having to top off by hand. We will see its longevity and hopefully my review will stand. Really easy to install.
