Product Questions

Does the 1 gallon total package mean it comes with one gallon jugs or that it only makes one gallon of each solution?

If this package makes more than 1 gallon how much does it make?
Question by: Louis on Jun 9, 2014 2:12:00 PM
Hi Louis,
The 1 gallon package contains 1 gallon of each dry reagent. How many gallons of solution this makes depends on the particular ingredient but your looking at about 8 gallons of alkalinity and 6 gallons of calcium in most circumstances.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Jun 9, 2014 2:12:00 PM
Other than Fauna Marin's Balling system, is there another system you can use to go along with BRS two part? I'm trying to wait for you guys to get some Fauna Marin stuff in. But it seems like that is a lost cause for the near future. Thanks
Question by: David on Jun 14, 2014 12:50:00 AM
Hi David,
Really just about any of them would work but the easiest is the Red Sea supplements because they have simple dosing recommendations based on calcium consumption (if you raise your calcium by X, add Y amount of trace elements).

Does the kit come with tubing for the pumps also?
Question by: Greg on Nov 20, 2013 2:57:00 PM
Hey Greg,
It sure does. The pumps themselves come with a little over 15ft of tubing each.

Wait if there is magnesium calcium and alkalinity wouldn't i need three pumps
Question by: Cameron on Oct 5, 2013 5:45:00 AM
Hi Cameron,
Magnesium declines very slowly and generally only needs to be added once a month or sometimes even less so most folks opt to save the expense and just dose the magnesium by hand when necessary.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Oct 5, 2013 5:45:00 AM
Hi - I've just started to use this system and mixing my first batch of Magnesium. Instructions say to 'let it sit' after mixing but not for how long. Is it a few minutes, hours? Please clarify. Thanks!
Question by: Andrew Bruemmer on Apr 25, 2016 11:54:00 PM
Great question!
We find it best to let the mix settle after mixing for around 4-5 hours, going back and checking the mix and if salt is still present you can mix it up regularly 2-3 times per day until the solution dissolves.

to use the pumps with a apex, do I need the breakout box?
Question by: Darrell Booker on May 13, 2016 2:21:00 PM
Great question! You will not need the breakout box in order to use the 1.1ml dosers on your Apex. Relay ports 4 and 8 on your Energy Bar8 are where you will want to plug them in.

What are the dimensions of the 1-gallon plastic jugs? Have to make sure they'll fit in my stand.

Thanks!

These are 5.5" x 5.5'" x 11.5" Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Feb 24, 2016 5:44:00 PM
I love this system and just want to make sure Im dosing everything the tank needs. Do you still recommend the Redsea coral colors or something else? I know people dose B-Ionic because it just has all of that stuff but I want to stay with your 2-part! :)
Question by: Kyle R on May 18, 2016 11:30:00 AM
Great question!
Our system will work great in conjunction with the red Sea coral color program and comes highly recommended on larger tanks where trace elements are not replaced with large water changes. This is a great (affordable alternative which will give you control over the amount you are dosing in.
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on May 18, 2016 4:09:00 PM
Can any combination of calcium, alk, and mag be mixed together and dosed from one pump, if not and i need to use individual pumps can should they be dosed at different times and how much time between each?

Question by: Robert on Nov 28, 2013 7:39:00 AM
Hey Robert,
The solutions must remain seperate from each other until they are added into the aquarium. You will want individual dosers for the calcium and alkalinity (which two are included in this package so your covered there). Most folks dose the magnesium by hand as it typically only needs to be added weekly or monthly, compared to the daily dose on the calcium and alkalinity.

Its best to dose them at separate times to high flow areas of the tank, though if dosed slowly to separate high flow areas of the tank its generally not an issue if you need to dose them at the same time either.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Nov 28, 2013 7:39:00 AM
is this compatible with a reef keeper system?
Question by: Tim on Feb 5, 2015 12:28:00 PM
Great Question Tim!
The BRS dosing pumps are compatible with the Reef Keeper system, just be sure to use outlets 1 and 4 with low voltage dosing pumps.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Feb 5, 2015 12:28:00 PM
Will I need to buy 2 timers for this if I do not have a controler
Question by: MICHAEL on Nov 8, 2013 1:48:00 AM
Hey Michael,
That would be the best way to do it, though if they were running for the same amount of time (which would generally be the case) you could run them off a timer with two outlets as well like our Hamilton Digital Timer. That said though, might be worth picking up a simple controller like the Reef Keeper Lite Basic. By the time you add up the cost of 4 timers its basically paid for itself not to mention the temp probe and controller functions themselves.

What is used for the Alkalinity solution. I can tell from the pic that the calcium is provided via Calcium Chloride, but I can't tell if it is Sodium Carbonate or Sodium Bi-Carbonate for the Alkalinity, as I would like to judge how this will effect my pH.

Question by: Tim on Sep 5, 2014 2:07:00 PM
Hi Tim,

You can use either Sodium Carbonate (soda ash) or Sodium Bicarbonate to supplement Alkalinity. The main difference between the two is that Soda Ash will raise your pH along with Alkalinity and Sodium Bicarbonate will not raise pH. Soda ash will also raise the Alkalinity more by volume so you will need to adjust dosage based on which one you choose.

If your system naturally runs at a high pH (above 8.3 - 8.5) I would go with Sodium Bicarbonate but otherwise Soda Ash will help bring up your systems pH.

I hope this helps!
Have a great day :)

  • Easy But Not As Described By Jeffrey on 12/30/2015

This is my first dosing pump. Very easy to set up and get working, but calibration showed them to be 1.8 and 2.0; not the 1.1 described. Calibrating them before running on the tank is absolutely necessary!
  • BRS auto dosers By Rich on 12/27/2015

Well I waited a long time to get these dosers it should have been the first item to get, a must have item for the reef tank, works well and priced right when on sale thank you BRS.
  • Great Product! By Hitch on 9/20/2015

Works amazingly! My corals have been doing great and I feel I have taken the last step to get my tank to support the harder SPS corals. Paired it with the Reef Keeper plus and would never do a tank without this system again.
  • Best upgrade I have done for my tank By William on 9/6/2015

Great deal and super easy to use. Corals really seem to like it.
  • Great Dosing Pumps By NateP on 8/19/2015

I'm pretty new to dosing and have been really impressed by this package. The dosing pumps were really easy to mount and get set up. BRS did some videos on how to program the apex controller that made setting up the program to time the outlets pretty straight forward. The included instructions and supplies made mixing the different solutions pretty easy. I'm still measuring and adjusting the dose to match what my tanks consumes, but overall I have been really pleased with the results.
  • Great package for the money By elwaine on 6/9/2015

Getting the dosing pumps calibrated and the system up an running was easy. Very clear instructions and helpful video tutorial. The dosing pumps are quite good, but they are not as precise as pumps I've used in the past... pumps that cost a lot more than those that come with the BRS package. However, they are good enough to have kept my Alkalinity and Calcium rock steady for a month, now. So they provide all the accuracy I need. I would definitely buy this again. I see no reason to spend big bucks on very precise pumps when these do the job perfectly.
  • Great Value By brian on 5/6/2015

This is my go to kit for dosing. Includes everything you need to automate 2-part dosing, given you have a controller (or timer). The dosing pumps are fairly accurate (+/- .1ml/min), and durable. The only con would be trying to figure out the Captcha in order to submit this review.
  • DOSING PUMPS By MAURO on 5/3/2015

I PURCHASES A REEF KEEPER AND TWO DOSING PUMPS, UNBEATABLE COMBINATION.
  • What Are You Waiting For? By Chris on 5/1/2015

I was very intimidated about having to wade into dosing. This kit and the video took all the mystery out of. Than you BRS, for taking the mystery out of 2-part and providing everything you need to get started in one easy purchase. I paired the pumps with my Apex and slowly dialed it on over about 2 weeks. My alk, calc and pH are now much more stable. Overnight pH drop is much less than it was now that I slowly dose alk after the lights go out. If you're at all intimidated about dosing, don't be! Just get this kit.
  • cant suceed without this By ryan on 3/25/2015

switching over my tank to a sps dominate tank. my success would not be possible without this. very easy to mix and the pumps are extremely well built and accurate. there isn't a lot of information online on how to program the pumps, so research is necessary, especially with the apex. but once you are dialed in life is great and the tank is happy
  • BRS dosing system By scootersmarine on 1/22/2015

Just received my new BRS dosing system and am very happy. Very well packaged and no damage. Dosing pumps were a breeze to set up and were perfectly calibrated. Mixing up ALK and CAL solutions was simple and mixed supper clear. Looking forward to see the great affects its going to have on my 90gal reef tank.
  • Excelente paquete By Hector on 12/29/2014

Primero compre el paquete sin pompas pero este lo consegui en thanks giving a muy buen precio. es lo mejor muy buena inversion ya que se inyecta solo al acuario mis sps parecen estar mas felices con la dosis en pequeñas proporciones. :)
