  • Selecting the Right Sediment Filter | How To Tuesday

Quick Overview

Most sediment filters in aquarium RO systems are inexpensive surface filters that quickly lose their effectiveness when the surface becomes clogged. Purtrex Depth Sediment filters are true graded density filters that capture larger particles at the surface and smaller particles towards the center. This means the Purtrex Depth Sediment Filter will trap particles throughout the entire thickness of the filter.

  • 0.6 or 5 Micron nominal filtration
  • Fits all standard 10" RO units
  • True Graded Density
  • We recommend changing sediment filters when they visually become dirty or a noticeable drop in pressure is noticed.

Product Questions

What's the difference between the 1 and 5 Microns?
Question by: Christy on Apr 3, 2014 4:41:00 PM
Hi Christy,
The microns rating is how small of particles the filter will remove, so a 1 micron filter will remove particles larger then 1 micron. The 1 micron will technically remove a bit more sediment but in most circumstances that isn't a major benefit. The 5 micron is the better choice more often then not because it won't clog as fast.

Full Details

Many cartridges claim to be depth filters. But to be a true depth filter, a cartridge must be able to retain contaminants throughout the entire cross section of the filter.

A graded density allows larger particles to be trapped near the surface while smaller particles penetrate the larger open areas to be trapped nearer the center of the filter in the smaller openings. Without graded density, a so-called "depth" filter will operate in practice only as a surface filter. The Purtrex filter has the graded density that is required to be a real depth filter.

The Purtrex depth filter is an exceptional value for general applications where long life, high purity and low change-out frequency are required. Produced through GE Osmonics patented melt blown micro fiber technology, Purtrex is a 100% pure polypropylene depth filter with exceptional dirt-holding capacity. Purtrex true-graded density filter matrix (lower density at the surface of the filter with progressively higher density toward the center) captures particles throughout the entire filter depth. This translates to longer life and fewer change-outs than existing string-wound or resin-bonded filters.

Purtrex contains no wetting agents, solvents, anti static agents or binders, and meets the requirements of the FDA for food and beverage contact. The filter incinerates to trace ash for easy disposal.

  • Great product By kyle on 4/19/2015

Very happy with this sediment filter
  • proably overkill but works for me! By Charles on 3/1/2015

If you have enough water pressure, consider using a 1 and a 5 micron sediment filter. I find these are the least expensive part of the system and they are easy to change. BY having both filters, I really notice my other RO/DI components last longer. Plus... you can change the 5 micron filter and leave the 1 until it get dirty. It is most likely more than most people need, but it works for me!
  • works for me By Dave on 2/24/2015

    good quality, good price
  • Great value! By Guyat16648 on 12/30/2014

Been buying these for a year now. Great price and fast shipping! Thanks brs !!!
  • good filter at low prices By shovelrider on 9/29/2014

This is the only sediment filter I use and I always go with the 1 micron. It lasts a year with my local water and its low price cant be beat. I also like that it is white and I can see when it starts to change colors as it gets dirty.
  • great By Adam on 9/8/2014

    Great filter, great price
  • Works great By ... on 9/7/2014

There's always tons of nasty stuff in it. I change it out every week. Easily cleaned with a hose or right in the sink. You can get a lot of uses out of one.
  • good By James on 3/14/2014

good filter, fit my filter guys ro unit without problems, fast shipping
  • great! By wentom on 2/2/2014

Super great! Between coupon for free shipping, speed of shipping and great price, wish I'd have stocked up! Thought very reasonable when I had to replace all three before though. Yep, wish I'd have stocked up!
  • Love These By Andrew on 1/28/2014

I have been using these on my RO unit for about 4 months now. They have really been pulling a lot of rust out of the water and saving my membrane!
  • High quality reasonable price By James on 1/27/2014

I've been using the 5 micron filter for about a year. The 1 micron filter is well worth the extra dollar. I get way more out of my membrane now between having to flush out the membrane.
  • Fits Coralife RO system By Bill on 1/24/2014

I picked up a used Coralife RO system that needed new filters. BRS filters fit and work well with this system.
