Quick Overview

Why does BRS recommend this?

Biological filtration is the number one key to a nice and stable reef tank, and anytime we can sneak in some MarinePure Biomedia into an All in one tank, sump, or even overflows we will.  We have run density tests and they have proved to be more porous than any live rock we could find.  They are a great base for sponge growth, microfauna, and even coral frags.

MarinePure is an inert ceramic material with open flow architecture, extremely high surface area and natural wetting properties. A Single 1½” Marine Pure ceramic sphere has 240 square feet of surface area. This means you can fit almost 20 times the surface area in the same space verses bioballs.

Will these spheres affect the water PH?
Question by: Kenny on Jan 18, 2016 1:25:00 AM
Great question!
These will not change or alter the pH in the aquarium. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
Answer by: Connor (Admin) on Jan 26, 2016 7:08:00 PM
Do the ceramic balls need to be submerged completely in the water or can they be on the media tray and have the water continuously dripping on them?
Question by: Eric Johnson on Jan 30, 2016 12:26:00 AM
Great question!
They can be run in a trickle tower or submerged! Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Starting up a new 60 gallon tank. Planning on putting Marinepure in sump. Where is the best place in my sump? Was thinking the refugium section(6.5" x 11.5").
Question by: Oscar on Jan 23, 2016 1:32:00 AM
Great question!
We would typically recommend placing the marine pure in the refugium or sump section with average flow to added over the media. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

are these suitable for fresh and saltwater?
Question by: Pete on Feb 2, 2014 3:46:00 PM
Hi Pete,
There is no reason you couldn't use them on a freshwater system.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Feb 2, 2014 3:46:00 PM
Do you know how many of the balls are in a gallon of them or how large of a physical area they would take up? ie. 1 gallon 8"x10" one layer deep.
Thanks
Question by: rick on Jul 8, 2014 2:58:00 PM
Hi Rick,
There is going to be roughly 75-100 ceramic media balls in a 1g box. If you have an 8x10" area and only want one layer of the balls, that is about 80 square inches. Each ball takes up about 1.5" in each direction so you could be able to have 5 rows of 6 balls in that area (only about 30 balls). If you have a flat square area that you only want to put a single row of them in, I would suggest looking at the block as well.

Question by: Paul on Mar 24, 2015 3:28:00 PM

Owners Manual

The media’s composition is similar to natural rock formations. MarinePure provides approximately 150,000 sq. Ft per cu. Ft (510 m2/L) of accessible surface area. The properties of MarinePure create a stable home for a dense population of beneficial bacteria that remove ammonia and nitrites from your aquarium. Some systems will also see a decrease in nitrates. MarinePure will work in sumps, trickle filters, wet/dry filters, hang on the back filters or directly in the tank.

  • 100% Tank Tested
  • Most technically advanced bio-filtration substrate
  • High usable surface area for beneficial bacteria growth
  • Open porosity means maximum bacteria exposure to contaminates and promotes excellent water circulation and less clogging
  • Designed specifically to target ammonia and nitrite removal and minimizes nitrates
  • Inert and chemically stable
  • Greater than 80% open porosity
  • Provides consistent water chemistry
  • Reduces tank maintenance
  • Able to support large fish loads
  • Can be cleaned, reused and sterilized

  • So far so good By Tbone on 11/9/2015

I think that I could use some more live rock but once u get ur tank up and running, the way u like it , it doesn't seem right to change things around, my nitrates were slowly creeping up so I decided to add these in place of rock, I put the whole box in my sump and it's still early to tell if they are helping or not, but no ammonia spikes or cloudy water!!
  • I hate to disagree, but STAY AWAY FROM THESE!!! By MIkeB on 10/9/2015

Okay, I got these about a year ago. Put 'em in the sump, but pH issues made me tear down the tank. I didn't know how to clean these, SO I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, and they told me to soak them in Hydrogen Peroxide. I did so, and stored them in a sealed container. A few months later, I put a few(no more then ten)in the sump of a small SPS frag tank. SIX HOURS LATER, the water was cloudy and my corals were dead (only a few hundred dollars worth). I didn't think it was the balls. Soaked them again and stored them. Yesterday, I placed them in a new 40B frag tank. This morning the tank was cloudy, and the water felt....almost soapy. No ammonia, so I thought I would check the pH. THE pH WAS 11! As in, ELEVEN. Say it with me: ELEVEN! The pH calibration packets are 7 and 10. The tank was at...11! Everyone else seems to have a great experience with these. My pH was at 11! A BRS recommendation and a five star rating are no way good enough for me to ever risk using these again.

MY pH was at 11! Today!
  • Love it By Hans24hrs on 10/2/2015

I read about these a while back, then spoke with them at MACNA. I think these are a great product. The balls work great for smaller tanks. I have an IM Fusuon 30L, and filled one chambe. Used the rest of them in my sump on my 315. Plan on getting more
  • AWesome By Cristian on 2/27/2015

Very light and very porous. I bought these to keep in sump and have bacteria ready to go for a quarantine tank if needed. Time will tell how they perform
  • Awesome By Mackjr on 1/31/2015

I find the box a little small but the product packs a big punch in surface area! I will be reorderi these ASAP!
  • exelent quality By Nelson on 11/28/2014

been using this for about 4 months now, excellent product spend the money on this and not on the plastic ones looks cleaner and the surface area is just insane for the amount of space that they take!
  • Excellent replacement By Adam on 11/24/2014

As far as i can tell, these guys live up to their claims and far better than those plastic bio-balls. I originally bought them to use in my AIO Nuvo 16 for added biological filtration but liked them so much I use them in all my aquariums. They fit great in my canister filters on my 55 gal & 90 gal freshwater aquarium, the sump on my 92 gal reef aquarium and in the back compartment of my AIO 16 gal Nano reef.
  • Great Product By Conny on 11/15/2014

Works as described. Great way to increase bio - mass in the sump. Easy to work with and stays in place.
  • Marine Pure Ceramic Biomedia By Ojake on 9/7/2014

Bought a gallon two weeks ago to go in my frag tank as extra biological filtration. Love the way they support the egg crate when spread out. Be sure to rinse prior to use to get rid of dust and fine loose particles. Will let you know how they hold up.
  • works great By matthew on 8/23/2014

Will never go back to bio balls
  • Very porous and lots of are in a small package By Ronstopbl on 3/4/2014

Replaced regular plastic bio balls in my sump tank and what a difference these things made! Zero detectable nitrates! Lots of little critters hanging out between them! With limited space for live rock, these are the next best thing!
  • Marine Pure Bio Media By Mark on 1/9/2014

I have been using this product for over 2 years. I found them superior to plastic bio balls as they don't clog or cause elevated nitrates.

    I highly recommend

You need very little compared to plastic bio balls, surface area of this product is amazing
