- DIY Aquarium Screen Top Kits - 1/4" Netting
Just what I needed By Casey on 6/20/2014Casey would recommend this product to a friendThis kit has saved my new Blue spot Jawfish
I actually tried tracking down the materials at my local Home Depot and could not find netting that I liked. This kit ended up being a few bucks more but it was well worth it to have all the materials in one kit.
The top is easy enough to assemble. Just make sure you are careful when cutting the frame with a hack saw. I bent it just a tiny bit and has trouble putting the corner pieces on. A quick fix was achieved by flaring the opening edges a little and then smoothing them back down after attaching the corners.
The finished product looks great and doesn't block out any light. The 1/4 screen size is too small to let any future purchases going carpet surfing.
5 Ft DIY 1⁄4" Screen Top By kimberly on 5/18/2014kimberly would recommend this product to a friendThe merchandise arrived quickly. Easy to assemble. Enough material arrived where I can replace the top twice. I would byt again. Only thing tool provided is cheap and awkward to use. Also corner prices must be installed correctly because too difficult to change.
Stops jumping clowns! By Shawna on 5/1/2014Shawna would recommend this product to a friendMy two clowns are a bit jumpy, and enjoy making me panic when I hear them splashing about. This netting kit was easy to put together, even in a shape that would go around the equipment in the back of my tank. Thanks for making a nice all in one kit! I love that I didn't have to run all over the hardware store looking like an idiot trying to find exactly what I needed.
Perfect By evilc66 on 3/24/2014evilc66 would recommend this product to a friendWhile there isn't any real innovation with the product, it's executed well, and at the right price. The finished product looks good, and really isn't that hard to assemble. If you've ever replaced the screens on windows before, it makes it even easier. It's also really nice that they include everything you need to get it assembled (with the exception of a saw to cut it to length).
Fun project everything you need included By surfishjoe on 2/12/2014surfishjoe would recommend this product to a friendI shopped around and the kit from BRS was better quality and less hassle than trying to piece something locally. Yes i probably could have saved a few bucks but the end result is well worth it. I have a great looking top that was easy to put together with no surprises. One tip- take your time cutting the frame with a hacksaw as the frame is easy to damage. Thanks BRS!
Good product. By Axizo2 on 1/21/2014Axizo2 would recommend this product to a friendIf you use the proper tools and follow directions this DIY screen should work just fine. I used You tube videos and was able to put it together fairly quickly. Fits well as a screen and does not effect light shimmer at all.
Great finish for a rimless tank By Richard on 1/20/2014Richard would recommend this product to a friendI used this for my Deep Blue 60 cube and it came out great. Don't try to make the screen to tight or it will twist the frame. I made it just smaller than the inside dimensions of the glass and it sits inside so perfectly you can't even tell is there.
works well By Phormium on 12/18/2013Phormium would recommend this product to a friendThis is a great product--the frame is easy to cut and put together, tight fit so that it's not flimsy, sits flat and the mesh is also easy to get straight and taut. Depending on the size of your tank, there is lots leftover of the screen and the spline for future changes or repairs which is a nice bonus. Overall somewhat expensive but the results were worth it.
Looks Sharp By Michael on 11/25/2013Michael would recommend this product to a friendYes, I am aware that you could probably find all the parts for this kind of build at a hardware store, potentially even for less money. That's not the point of this kit. The point is that you buy a kit that's been tested over other people's tanks that you know works and won't require a single (or subsequent) trip to the hardware store. I used a simple hacksaw and rotary tool to cut and smooth the 3 foot kit to fit my Nuvo 24. It looks great and keeps my temps down in the hot Texas climate.
not worth it By Levi on 8/26/2013Levi wouldn't recommend this product to a friendI got the same kit at my local home improvement store for under 10 dollars. This is such a rip off I would hope people aren't seriously paying this much for this junk.
works well/ cost effective By dru on 7/29/2013dru would recommend this product to a friendI have a custom sized rectangular tank with wrasses who jump. The top worked perfectly. While not quick to assemble.with frame cutting and inching along to get the screening tight, the final product looked great. I compared pricing for the kit components at a local hardware store and BRS was price competitive.
Got what I expected By mntbighker on 7/22/2013mntbighker would recommend this product to a friendI am not a big fan of the frame material but in general this seems to be the only game in town if you want this type of cover with clear screen material. I hope it holds up to the salt environment. The build process is pretty simple, but can be a little finicky to keep the screen tight and the frame square.

i have a jbj nano 28 that has a rounded front. is there a way to make this screen with a rounded front.
Bulk Reef Supply Hi Theo,
Unfortunately the frame doesn't bend well. What most folks do is make a square/rectangle shaped screen to cover what they can as its better then nothing.

What is the best way to cut this? If my tank is a 90 gallon (48.5 inches by 18.5 inches), the 4 foot section covers the length, but too much on the width. Suggestions?
Bulk Reef Supply Hey Matt,
A hacksaw works just fine for the screen frame. The netting itself is soft enough to easily be cut by a razor blade.

This may be a stupid question but I have a 55 gallon tank. The dimensions are 48 x 13 x 20. I just need to order the 4 foot kit correct?
Bulk Reef Supply Hey Mike,
You got it. The 4ft kit comes with frame and netting to cover up to a 4ft x 3ft area.

Is the 1/4" spacing of the grid?
How will it affect reef light?
What's the best way to cut the framing pieces to the fit my tank?
Bulk Reef Supply Hi Scott,
Correct, its the grid spacing on the netting. It has a very minimal effect on the amount of light in the tank. The easiest way to cut the framing is with a simple hacksaw.

I have bought just the screen in the past. I use it to make custom lids for people with acrylic. Is the mesh on its own still available?
Bulk Reef Supply Hey Jonathan,
