  am going to purchases this screen lid. does the heat hurt the netting ? my light is about 6 inches above the tank.

  Shouldn't be any issue at all, ours was left for years within inches of metal halide lighting. You will notice the netting possibly getting warm if you use a high intensity light like MH but it won't get hot.

  What would you suggest to use to trim the frame sections down?

  so for a 30" tank I would order the 3 ft kit right?

  That would generally be correct, you just need to make sure that the frame pieces are large enough for your tanks dimensions and then you will cut them to size.

  I could see how this would work fine with LEDs, but would it melt under metal halide lights?

  MH aren't an issue either with minimal spacing, in fact here at the office our cover spent well over a year just inches below a 2x 250MH fixture. That said you would not want them actually touching!

  What material is the framing made out of, vinyl or aluminum? If it's aluminum, isn't there an issue with corrosion from the salt water?

  You are correct, the frames are made out of aluminum. Fortunately corrosion isn't an issue with the aluminum frames.
