Quick Overview

Dosing with BRS Bulk Kalkwasser is one of the very few proven, effective methods to add calcium and alkalinity with a single product while maintaining pH at an affordable price. Commonly used in conjunction with auto top off systems. BRS Bulk Kalkwasser is produced with the highest quality material available to the aquarium industry.

USING KALKWASSER

  1. Before dosing Kalkwasser, it is necessary to test and raise calcium and alkalinity levels to their correct levels. We suggest using Calcium Chloride and Sodium Bicarbonate. Kalkwasser should not be used for this because, in large doses, it will significantly raise pH.

  2. Use the BRS Reef Calculator to determine proper bicarbonate and calcium chloride amounts to adjust alkalinity and calcium.

  3. Maintain new levels with Kalkwasser using an Auto Top Off System.

I don't have a,auto top off, how would I dose then?
Question by: Rick Linboom on Nov 4, 2013 1:36:00 PM
Hi Rick,
If you don't have an auto top off (which I would highly recommend) then your going to need a kalk dripper of some sort. Check out this video we made on making your own kalk dripper.

Do you ship Kalkwasser into Canada?
Question by: Scott on Aug 1, 2014 2:26:00 PM
Hi Scott,
Things with customs can change rapidly, but at this time we don't have any issues sending Kalkwasser to Canada.

Does kalkwasser actually raise levels? Or just maintain your levels? I'm being told both.
Question by: Joseph on May 5, 2014 11:06:00 AM
Hi Joseph,
Technically you have to raise the levels to maintain the levels (maintaining really just means your increasing the levels at the same rate its being consumed). The confusion comes from the fact that kalk would be a poor choice to try and raise the levels by more then that because of its significant pH effect. If you added enough kalk to say raise your tanks calcium from 400 to 450, you would also raise the pH to catastrophic levels. It also suppliments both calcium and alkalinity, so you can't raise one without messing with the other. Two part would be what you want for adjusting levels.

Hey there,

I've added kalkwasser to my ATO with the ratio of 1 teaspoon per gallon of ATO volume. It doesn't seem to dissolve, just settle out after a couple hours. I don't run a circulation pump in my ATO as it's only 7 gallons and I'm filling it every week. Would a circulation pump help dissolve the kalk? Would you recommend the circulation pump only coming on with the top off pump? I've read you shouldn't circulate kalk when it's in an ATO, is this true?

Thanks!
Question by: Adam on Nov 16, 2013 10:23:00 AM
Hey Adam,
You specifically do not want to circulate kalk as you will actually deplete it by doing so (your continuously adding co2 which will deplete it). Its normal to have some sediment when you mix kalk and nothing to worry about. Give it a good mix when you put it in and then just allow it to settle and use it.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Nov 16, 2013 10:23:00 AM
I'm currently using the BRS 2 parts manually dosing 12mL twice a day. I have a 55 gallon with 10 gallon sump with medium stock tank with sps and lps. I can barely maintain my alk. If I start using kalkwasser with my top off water (I lose about 1/2 gallon a day), do I still need the 2 parts to maintain the alk level.
Question by: Kelvin on May 7, 2015 3:01:00 PM
No answers yet. Be the first to answer the question!
In reading some questions asked and answered, I came across one about using a circulation pump to dissolve the Kalk. The answer was not to, but could you at least use it initially to dissolve the kalk? Just when you add it in the beginning to mix it up. If not, then how would you mix it in a 20 gallon brute trash can?
Question by: David on Apr 29, 2014 10:56:00 PM
Hey David,
If you really wanted to you could run it for like a minute, but just pouring the kalk in and mixing it for a minute or two by hand generally suffices as well. The thing you don't want to do is continue to agitate it after the initial mixing. If for example you put the power-head in for as little as a half hour you may remove a significant amount of the kalks usefulness.
Answer by: Bulk Reef Supply on Apr 29, 2014 10:56:00 PM
Hi,
My Question is if you can't put a power-head in to mix the solution because you might remove a significant amount of the kalks usefulness, then what happens when you drip the solution into your tank? With so much circulation/water movement, wouldn't that just deplete it within a few minutes?

Thank you.
Question by: Tim on Jun 15, 2014 5:29:00 PM
Hi Tim,
The water chemistry in a container of a kalkwasser solution is extremely different from the water chemistry of an aquarium. In the aquarium the concentration is much lower and precipitation far less of an issue (though if you add to much kalkwasser to the aquarium and increase the concentrations too high it will precipitate just as it would in the storage container). Used correctly though that will not be a problem.

how do i know how much to put in my ATO reservior? is there a calculator like the ones for calcium and alkalinity on BRS?
Question by: chen yang on Nov 27, 2013 9:16:00 AM
Kalk can't be added to raise your calcium and alkalinity like you would with two part because the pH swing would be so significant (hence no calculator option). When it comes to kalk you can add up to 2 teaspoons per gallon of top off water but I would start with 1/2 teaspoon. If that isn't enough to keep up with your consumption then you can go ahead and kick it up a notch until you find that sweet spot.

Full Details

Kalkwasser - This will be used for daily dosing to maintain calcium and alkalinity levels as well as elevate the tanks pH.  Because this product does elevate the pH, it is important to dose slowly in small amounts.  This product is designed to be used daily to continually replace calcium and alkalinity as it is consumed and not to make large adjustments.

Calcium Chloride - This is used to make larger adjustments to calcium levels. This product has no effect on the tank's pH so it is possible to make larger changes to calcium levels in single doses.

Sodium Bicarbonate - This is used to make larger adjustments to the tank's alkalinity levels. Sodium bicarbonate does have a small temporary lowering effect on the tank's pH. It is possible to make relatively large adjustments to the tank's alkalinity without a major impact on the tank's pH but it is wise to monitor the tank's pH while dosing.

Magnesium Mix - Dosed occasionally to maintain magnesium levels. Maintaining correct magnesium levels helps prevent calcium and alkalinity from precipitating and makes maintaining correct parameters much easier.
