Product Questions

When making salt water should it always be made at hand if i have a contaner or salt water should just be made with in the few hours of mixing it???
Question by: rocky on Mar 14, 2014 3:51:00 PM
Hi Rocky,
Its easy to have it mixed and ready to go, but there isn't any chance you can mix it as you need it with most salts. The Red Sea Coral Pro in particular actually recommends that you use it within a few hours of mixing it. Letting it sit won't hurt it, but it will get a little cloudy the longer it sits.

What water do you recommend? Is DI ok to use?
Question by: Hunter on Feb 7, 2016 8:33:00 PM
Great question!
Ro/DI water is recommended whenever adding water to salt mix to start with pure water. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

What sea salt do you use or feel is the best and why. I have used reef crystal instant oceans but have been told Red Sea coral is better. Is there really enough difference to make a change. I have 225 reef tank been up running 10 years thanks for your remarks. Ron
Question by: Ron on Mar 10, 2016 2:13:00 AM
Great question!
We have had great luck with the Red Sea Coral Pro with the added elements where it has reduced the amount we need to dose for trace and calcium, alkalinity. Another great option we have used is the HW reefer. Both will have added elements to help support more diverse tank. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

I am new to marine tanks can I use this salt for cycling and then I will add fishes and on down the line I will add a couple of corals. is this one better or Reef crystals salt?
Question by: Ronn on Sep 21, 2013 10:36:00 PM
Hey Ronn,
If your just starting a new tank and you don't currently have any corals, then I would suggest using the regular Red Sea Salt. The coral pro salt has elevated levels of calcium and alkalinity that wouldn't be of use without corals in your tank.

Full Details

Unlike the natural reef environment, which has an immeasurable reservoir of all 57 elements, a reef aquarium is an artificial environment that is constantly affected by coral growth and other ongoing biological processes. Red Sea Coral Pro Salt Mix is the result of years of research. Formulated for use with RO water, the unique Sodium Chloride harvested from the Red Sea Reef contains optimally balanced ratios between calcium, alkalinity and magnesium. Coral Pro Salt Mix contains elevated levels of these elements for accelerated coral growth.

Coral Pro Salt Mix is designed to provide the biologically balanced, elevated levels of the foundation elements (Calcium, Magnesium & Carbonates) necessary for sustainable, accelerated growth and enhanced vitality of all corals. Coral Pro salt mix is ideal for reef aquariums, in particular for LPS and SPS corals and growing out coral frags. Main parameters at a salinity of 33.0 ppt are: KH - 11.8-12.2 °dKH, Ca - 430 - 450 mg/l, Mg 1280 - 1340 mg/l.

  • Great Product - Trusted Brand By RJS6711 on 5/4/2016

When I chose my first reef tank a couple of months ago, I went with a Red Sea Reefer. However, being a brand-loyalist, I stuck with a brand of salt that I was familiar with from years of keeping FOWLR tanks - Instant Ocean. Because I was building a reef tank, I chose reef crystals, which I had not previously had reason to try before. I was very disappointed with the result.

Now, I don't want to unfairly blame all of my water chemistry problems on the Instant Ocean folks. After all, I am using a few other products for the first time that could have contributed to some of my issues (such as live sand and reef saver dry rock) - who knows. But I had one heck of a time trying to keep my water chemistry in the target range for pH, alkalinity and calcium. I tried to buffer it and ended up with carbonate precipitation (milky water).

I decided to do a water change and used Red Sea Coral Pro Salt Mix and like what I'm seeing so far in terms of those same water chemistry factors.

I highly recommend this product and have been happy with all of the Red Sea products I have used thus far. Spend a little more up front and save yourself frustration later - go with Red Sea salt and test kits. They are worth the extra few bucks. Happy reeling. Robert

  • Corals By jose on 3/25/2016

I use Instant Ocean for my 95 Gallon tank . I only have fish . I want to get corals . Can I still use instant ocean salt with a calcium reactor
  • Works well By Sam on 3/12/2016

fish and sps/lps seem happy. Also like the small buckets :)
  • Very Good By Dimitri on 3/7/2016

Very Good it does exactly what it says...
  • So far so good By Jeff H on 2/18/2016

Shipping was quick and packaged well. Mixes extremely well and so far so good on growth, I did notice a small amount of additional algae growth but my Magnificent Foxface happily took care of that. All in all a great product....just a bit pricey, which is my reason for 4 stars.
  • Great salt mix By Rachelle on 2/15/2016

I have been using this salt mix since the start of my tank. All my corals seem to really enjoy it, my nems look amazing, my zoas are spreading and my fish and inverts are doing great!
  • Great Salt Mix By Kyle on 2/10/2016

I really like this salt. I switched from reef crystals about 2 months ago and have noticed and overall more stable tank. I love that it does a great job of keeping Calcium, Alkalinity, and Magnesium in check along with other trace elements.

The salt mixes very easy and having the nice little bucket makes it easier to keep then having a reef crystals bag where the slightest moisture would make your salt clump. With the bucket you can fold the bag and close the lid and have the salt ready to go for your next water change.

The price is a little more expensive but I really think it is worth it. I am about to set up a new tank and will be using this salt from the get go.
  • won't ever use anything else By katy on 1/30/2016

I have a 7.5 gallon nano tank with lps and sps and this salt makes my life so easy. many small water changes a week with no protein skimmer and feeding of the tank on a schedule and everything looks amazing. It makes my life so easy considering the challenge of a nano tank and keeping parameters in check for the sps. I do not have do dose calcium or anything else when I keep up with water changes. Love this salt.
  • better but cost more By hondafishguy on 1/26/2016

i can only compare to reef crystals but it mixes much faster and does not leave a brown residue. it does cost much more but it is a better salt i gave it a 4 star only because of the cost. when i make salt water its 55 gallons at a time in a plastic drum, i feel like sometimes a have to add a little more salt sometimes over other times but from what i can tell it does keep the PH, alkalinity and calcium levels higher which is a good thing. i will keep using it even with it costing more! i love the fact i don't have to clean the brown crap out of mu mixing drum anymore
  • The Best By Robert on 12/21/2015

I've used this mix from initial setup 3 years ago, & continue to dose Kh, Ca, Mg to the parameters out of bucket, @a SG of 1.025. Can't speak to issues made here of mixing salts though.
All inhabitants thriving & mixing to clarity in just minutes (I always keep mixed water around "just in case")
Little pricey than synthetic, its a get what you pay for world
  • TERRIBLE - Killed 1/2 of my corals By Chris on 12/16/2015

this is salt that is on steroids. If you switch to this salt from another one, it will mess up your parameters and kill your corals. I lost 1/3 of my corals, SPS and LPS. I went back to my old salt and the tank returned to its normal self. Do not buy this salt.
